Ashok Rajgopal is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, credited with close to 20,000 Arthroscopic and over 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries [1] and reported to be one of the most experienced in his field in India. [1] He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of orthopaedic surgery. [2] He has also been awarded the Dr. BC Roy award by the Medical Council of India to "Recognize the Best Talents in Encouraging the Development of Specialties in Different Branches in Medicine" for 2014.[ citation needed ]

Biography

Ashok Rajgopal was born on 30 September 1953, in Bengaluru, in the Indian state of Karnataka. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune University in 1974 and went for higher studies to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi from where he obtained Master of Surgery (MS), in 1978. [3] This was followed by a stint of studies at the University of Liverpool and, in 1983, secured the degree of MCh. [4] He is also a Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy - FIMSA (1996) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2010). [1] [5] [6]

Rajgopal did his internship at the Central Hospital of Northern Railways at New Delhi in 1975. He did his junior residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, after which he did his post-graduation in orthopedics there. From March 1979 to August 1980, he did his senior residency at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. [1] [7] Thereafter, he continued his higher studies, followed by another senior residency at the Ormskirk General Hospital, Lancashire, United Kingdom, till 1985. [6]

After returning to India, in 1985, he started independent orthopaedic practice at Sehgal Neurological Research Institute, New Delhi, and at Moolchand Hospital, New Delhi, as a Senior consultant orthopedic surgeon. In 1996 he joined Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, New Delhi, as senior orthopaedic consultant . [1] [6] [7] In 2004, he joined Fortis Hospital, New Delhi where he worked as the Director of Orthopedic Department till he joined Medanta, in 2009. [1] [4] [6] In October 2009, Dr. Ashok Rajgopal joined Medanta, a multi speciality hospital in Gurgaon, Haryana [8] and was serving as the Chairman of the Bone and Joint Institute, in the hospital. [1] [5] [9] In July 2016, Dr. Ashok Rajgopal joined Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon and Fortis Escorts, Okhla as Executive Director and Chairman Fortis Bone and Joint Institute. [10] In March 2019 Dr. Rajgopal took over as Group Chairman, Medanta Institute of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Orthopaedics, Medanta- The Medicity, Gurugram.

Achievements

Rajgopal, who specialises in Joint Replacement Surgery and Orthopaedic surgery of the knee joint, [4] has reportedly performed more than 20,000 arthroscopic, over 35,000 arthroplasty [4] including Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Surgeries, making him one of the most prolific orthopedic surgeons [1] [4] and is considered by many,[ by whom? ] as the best bone and joint surgeon in India. [1] He is reported to have good success rate in hip and joint replacement surgeries, [11] and compares favourably with any other surgeon in the world. [1]

Rajgopal pioneered Bilateral Total Knee Replacement surgery in India in April 1987. He introduced Minimally Invasive Knee surgery in March 2002. He is also the designer of the special instruments used during this surgery which are being used as the standard instruments for this procedure by surgeons all over the world. He is actively involved in research and designing of knee implants. A member of the Global Persona Developer Team, supported by Zimmer, he has been instrumental in the designing of the PERSONA Knee system. This is a personalised knee replacement system and has been launched in India on 3 Sep 2013.

Rajgopal was appointed honorary surgeon to the President of India, in 1997, during the term of KR Narayanan. As an expert in sports medicine, he has also treated a number of sports persons. He is famous for treating Pullela Gopichand and helping him get back on the court when the badminton player suffered a career threatening knee injury while playing doubles at the 1994 National Games at Pune. [12] It is reported that on realizing Gopichand's inability to pay the fees, Rajgopal, a sports enthusiast, [4] waived the fees [13] and asked for an All England title in return. Gopichand went on to win the All England Badminton Championships in 2001 and, years later, said that Rajgopal was one of the first persons he thought of after winning the championship point against Chen Hong. Rajgopal has been a speaker at several international and national conferences and has been an invited speaker at the Harvard Knee Course in 2013. He has also chaired several orthopaedics conferences both in India and abroad. He has been involved in the teaching and training of young Orthopaedic surgeons from all over the world. He has to his credit several articles in international journals and chapters in Orthopaedic textbooks. He is also on the editorial board of the KSSTA (Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy) and is a reviewer for the JBJS (British Volume), both well known and widely read Journals of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability, most commonly offered when joint pain is not diminished by conservative sources. It may also be performed for other knee diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In patients with severe deformity from advanced rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or long-standing osteoarthritis, the surgery may be more complicated and carry higher risk. Osteoporosis does not typically cause knee pain, deformity, or inflammation, and is not a reason to perform knee replacement.

Naresh Trehan is an Indian cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon. After graduating from King George's Medical University, Lucknow, India, he went on to practice at New York University Medical Center, Manhattan, USA from 1971 to 1988. He returned to India and started Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre. He serves as the chairman and managing director and chief cardiac surgeon of Medanta-The Medicity. He has served as personal surgeon to the President of India since 1991, has received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award and Dr. B. C. Roy Award.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty</span>

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a surgical procedure used to relieve arthritis in one of the knee compartments in which the damaged parts of the knee are replaced. UKA surgery may reduce post-operative pain and have a shorter recovery period than a total knee replacement procedure, particularly in people over 75 years of age. Bronson is an American orthopaedic surgeon who is Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside, and Chief of Joint Replacement Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and the author of advances in the development of minimally invasive surgical instruments to advance unicondylar partial knee replacement, including the Vision Total Hip System, a widely used hip replacement system that avoids the use of cement.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) is an international medical society with around 4,000 members. The membership comprises mostly orthopaedic surgeons along with sports scientists, sports physicians and sports physical therapists. The members are from some 92 different countries and are members of their local orthopaedic sports medicine societies or similar associations. Ashok K. Vaid is an Indian medical oncologist, who specializes in bone marrow transplantation. He is credited with the performance of the first 25 bone marrow transplantations in the private sector in North India. He heads the Cancer Institute- Division of Medical Oncology and Haemotology at Medanta The Medicity.

Yash Gulati is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He specializes in joint replacement and spine surgeries and is a visiting consultant at RAK Hospital, Ras al-Khaimah. He is the youngest orthopedic surgeon to win the civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

Gopal Krishna Vishwakarma, more popularly known as G K Vishwakarma, was an eminent orthopedic surgeon, academician and public health administrator. He was the Director General of Health Services from October 1986 to his retirement in October 1992. He was awarded the Silver Jubilee Award (1983) and the Dr. B. C. Roy Award by Medical Council of India, The Government of India, in recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine and public health honored him with the Padma Shri (1985) one of India's highest civilian awards in India.

Instrumental (PSI) in starting the first cartilage club in Delhi, to enhance the awareness about the cartilage science and regenerative treatments used in Orthopaedics.
