Lalit Kumar is an Indian oncologist, known to have contributed to the development of low cost medical facilities in Delhi. [1] The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine. [2]
Cancer cells grow everyday and very fast. So, loss of even a day is a great loss, says Dr. Lalit Kumar. [3]
Kumar is a graduate in medicine from Sarojini Naidu Medical College, Agra. [4] He completed his higher studies (DM) at the Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai and followed it up with a post doctoral fellowship at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School of the Hammersmith Hospital, London. Kumar, a Fulbright scholar, [4] is the Professor and Head of the Medical Oncology department at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, [5] All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi [1] [6] where he focuses on Multiple Myeloma and Gynaecological malignancies. During his tenure at the AIIMS, Kumar is known to have developed cost effective treatment protocols for sustained bone marrow and stem cell transplantations. [1] [4]
Kumar is a member of the Indo British Health Initiative (IBHI), [7] a foundation promoting scientific collaboration on healthcare between the UK and India. [8] He represents AIIMS in the inter institutional collaborative initiative with Institute of Women's Health (IfWH) of the University College of London (UCL) in the area of gynecological oncology. [9] He is also a member of the Expert Committee to examine the Serious Adverse Events (SAE) of deaths occurring during clinical trials. [10]
Kumar's researches have been documented. [11] Pubfacts, a knowledge repository with PubMed scientific data, has listed over 50 articles by Dr. Lalit Kumar. [12] He also attends international conferences on a regular basis. [13]
Kumar has been honoured by the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc) and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of India (FAMS) with fellowships. [4] [5] He is also a recipient of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) award and Ranbaxy Science Foundation award. [4] In 2008, the Government of India honoured him with Dr. B. C. Roy Award, [4] the highest award by the Indian government in the medical category. [14] This was followed by another government honour, the Padma Shri when he was included in the Republic Day honours in 2014. [2]

Institute of Oncology, and Trivandrum Cancer Center(TCC), part of SUT Royal Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and a professor at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Kochi. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2001 for his contributions in the cancer care field.
Nitish Naik is an Indian cardiologist, known for his expertise in cardiovascular diseases, and is an additional professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine. She is currently the President, National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education.
Pramod Kumar Julka, is an Indian cancer specialist (oncologist), medical educationist and writer, known for performing the first peripheral blood stem cell transplant following high dose chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer in India. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has awarded him by bestowing on him the honorary membership.

Dada, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.
Narayana Panicker Kochupillai, popularly known as N. P. Kochupillai, is an Indian clinical endocrinologist, Professor Emeritus of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a former head of the department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, known to have contributed to the understanding of endemically prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorders. A winner of 2002 Dr. B. C. Roy Award, he was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Yog Raj Sharma is an Indian ophthalmologist and ex-chief of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, the apex body of the National Programme for the Control of Blindness, a Government of India initiative to reduce the prevalence of blindness in India. He is the Chairman of the Task Force on Prevention and Control of Diabetic Retinopathy Group and the Co-Chairman of the National Task Force on Prevention of Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. An advisor to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India. Sharma was honored by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. In 2005, Yog Raj Sharma's published article on "Pars plana vitrectomy vs scleral buckling in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment" in Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica and in November 2021, American society of retina specialists cited it as top 100 publications on retinal detachment management in the last ~121 years. Of these top hundred publications, only nineteen countries contributed, three of the contributing countries were Asian and from India this study was the sole contribution. Dr Sharma called it 'the singular biggest achievement of his career" in an article published in Daily Excelsior, Jammu in December 2021.
Nikhil Tandon is an Indian endocrinologist, medical academic and the head of the department of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 2005 and was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

He is the senior consultant of General Medicine at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2003.
Surinder Kumar Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.
Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.
Ashok K. Vaid is an Indian medical oncologist, known for his pioneering efforts in bone marrow transplantation in India. He is credited with the performance of the first 25 bone marrow transplantations in the private sector in North India. He heads the Cancer Institute- Division of Medical Oncology and Haemotology at Medanta The Medicity.
Ashok Kumar Hemal is a urologist and medical academic, known as the first surgeon to perform robotic surgery in India. He is a former professor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi and is credited with efforts in establishing the department of robotic surgery at AIIMS where he has performed over 100 surgeries for cancer on kidney, prostate glands and urinary bladder. He has also served at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, as a professor and was a member of the team which developed teaching modules for the Centre for Medical Education Technology of AIIMS and Indira Gandhi National Open University. He has been involved in with many medical conferences and has published several medical articles; PubMed, an online repository of medical articles has listed 320 of them. Besides, he has authored a medical text book, Robotics in Urological Surgery, published by Springer Verlag. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Social Scientist Award of the University Grants Commission. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to medical science.
