Sudarshan Kumar Aggarwal (born 1935) is an Indian medical doctor and radiologist. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine. [1]

Biography

Sudarshan K. Aggarwal was born in 1935, as the youngest son of Dr. Diwan Chand Aggarwal, one of the pioneers of radiology in India, [2] and a member of the British Institute of Radiology, [3] at Lahore in the British India. [4] He graduated in medicine from Amristsar Medical College, Punjab University in 1957 and secured the post graduate degree of DMRD from London in 1961. He also obtained further degrees such as FRCR in 1986 from England, FACR in 1996 from the US and FRSM from the UK, the same year. [2] He had several training stints at various European hospitals viz. Middlesex Hospital, London, under Sir Bryan Windyer and Dr. F. C. Golding, the Western Regional Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Ullevel Hospital in Oslo, Norway, under Professor Frimann Dahl. [2] [4]

Aggarwal started his practice at the Diwan Chand Aggarwal Imaging Centre and Research Centre, run by his elder brother, Dr. S. P. Aggarwal, in 1959, specializing in Gastrointestinal and Uroradiology [4] [5] and took over the management of the centre in 1989, on the death of his brother. [4] [5] Over the years, he has contributed to making the Diwan Chand Aggarwal Imaging Centre and Research Centre, a post graduate study centre, recognized by the National Board of Examinations. Aggarwal has co-authored a three volume book, Diagnostic Radiology and Imaging. [6]

He has also published over 50 articles in Indian and international journals. [4] [5] Sudarshan K. Aggarwal lives in New Delhi, attending to his duties at the Diwan Chand Satyapal Aggarwal Imaging Research Centre. [7] [8]

Aggarwal is the founding editor of the Asian Oceanian Journal of Radiology. [2] [4] [9] and is a member of the editorial boards of two known journals, Abdominal Imaging [10] and the Indian Journal of Radiology and Imaging [11]

Sudarshan Aggarwal was the President of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association in 1989. [7] and the organizing secretary of the 6th Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology (1991) and the 20th International Congress of Radiology. [2] [4] He is a member of the Governing Council of the Devki Devi Foundation, a healthcare provider, based in Delhi. [12]

Awards and recognitions

Aggarwal has received many awards and recognitions such as the Beclere Medal by the International Society of Radiology [2] and the J. C. Bose Oration by the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association. [4] [5] He is also a recipient of the Gösta Forssell Award of the Swedish Academy of Radiology. Professor Dame Janet Elizabeth Husband is Emeritus Professor of Radiology at the Institute of Cancer Research. She had a career in diagnostic radiology that spanned nearly 40 years, using scanning technology to diagnose, stage, and follow-up cancer. She continues to support medicine and research as a board member and advisor for various organisations.

He is a former president of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) and the director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Bone Densitometry at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He has served as the honorary radiologist to the President of India and as the Honorary Consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He is on the Board of Advisors of Rishihood University. He has published several articles on clinical radiography and other medical topics. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2002.

Subhash Chand Manchanda is an Indian cardiologist and a senior consultant of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He is a Senior Consultant and Co-ordinator of the Diplomate of National Board program of the National Board of Examinations and a former professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS). He is the chairman of the advisory board of Diya Foundation, a non governmental organization managing a number of charitable institutions for the under-privileged children and aged people.

Mohan Chandra Pant (1956–2015) was an Indian radiation oncologist, institution builder and the founder vice chancellor of the H. N. B. Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun. He served as the Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, and was the Dean and head of the Radiotherapy Department at the King George's Medical University at the time of his death. Khushwant Lal Wig (1904–1986) was an Indian physician, medical academic, writer and the director of the All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1964, for his contributions to the Medical science.

Laxmi Chand Gupta was an Indian medical doctor, radiologist and writer, specialized in sports medicine. He was the medical director of Border Security Force and was a recipient of several honors including the SAARC Literary Award and the B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2010, for his contributions to medical science.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Atul Kumar (ophthalmologist)</span> Indian ophthalmologist

Atul Kumar is an Indian ophthalmologist who is currently the Chief & Professor of Ophthalmology at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (RPC-AIIMS), the national apex ophthalmic centre at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He was awarded the Padma Shri award in January 2007 for his services to the medical field. He specializes in vitreoretinal surgery and also heads the Vitreo-Retinal, Uvea and ROP services at RPC-AIIMS.

Brian Worthington was the first radiologist to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and is acknowledged as a pioneer in clinical magnetic resonance imaging. He was born in Oldham, England and was educated at Hulme Grammar School, training at Guy's Hospital after graduating in physiology and medicine. After graduation his career developed rapidly, particularly in the field of MRI research and he was subsequently admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists.
