Keiki R. Mehta, an Indian ophthalmologist, medical researcher and writer, is considered by many as the father of Phacoemulsification in India. [1] He is the Chief Surgical and Medical Director at Mehta International Eye Institute, a Mumbai-based specialty eye hospital founded by him. [2] He is known to be the first surgeon to perform a Radial keratotomy in India and is credited with the development of the first soft eye implant in the world, [3] [4] and the Keiki Mehta BP Valve Glaucoma Shunt, a medical implant used in the treatment of neovascular‚ congenital and uveitic glaucoma. [5] [6] He is a recipient of several honours including the Grand Honors Award of the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago and the Triple Ribbon Award of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to Medicine. [7]
Born in a Parsi family in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, Mehta graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Christian Medical College and secured his post graduate degree (MS) from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. [8] Moving to UK, he obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) from the Moorefield's Eye Hospitals and Institute of Ophthalmology, London where he had the opportunity to train under renowned ophthalmologist, Harold Ridley, and secured another Diploma from Dublin, before going to US for advanced training. [8] He returned to India in 1971 and started working on intraocular lenses (IOL) which was not available in India at that time. [3] He founded Colaba Eye Hospital where he introduced the posterior chamber implant and started working on the development of a soft implant in 1976. The efforts resulted in the presentation of a paper at the All India Ophthalmological Society in 1977 and subsequently at the American Intra-ocular Implant Society, San Francisco in 1978. He also developed a round intraocular lens, a first time in India, which was surgically implanted in 1983. [3] Keiki Mehta BP Valve Glaucoma Shunt is another of his inventions, which is a valved implant used in the treatment of glaucoma. [5]
Later, Mehta's focus shifted to Refractive surgery and did pioneering work on Radial Keratotomy and Excimer surgery. He wrote a book, Radial Keratotomy Principle & Practice, in 1990 which is a reference text on the subject. [9] When Optikon, an Italian manufacturer of ophthalmological equipment, toured India with a Phacoemulsification machine for promotional purposes, Mehta bought the equipment from them and visited USA to receive training on phacoemulsification under William F. Maloney in 1988. His researches with the equipment resulted in the development of new techniques including vertical lens rotation, a tangential chop technique, and lens coring. [3] In 2000, he founded Mehta International Eye Institute, attached to the Colaba Eye Hospital, for advanced research on ophthalmology, which has since been awarded the Big Brand Research Service Excellence Award for the Best Eye Hospital in Mumbai in 2011. [10] He also established Netra Rukshak Rural Eye Hospital, a charity hospital in Karjat, a small village with tribal people as majority population. [3] Besides the text book on Keratotomy, he is also the co-author of The Art of Phacoemulsification, a descriptive text and reference manual on phacoemulsification. [11]
Keiki Mehta, a consultant and head of the department of ophthalmology at Breach Candy Hospital, [8] is the honorary ophthalmologist to the Governor of Maharashtra, besides holding the position of honorary ophthalmologist to the Armed Forces of India and Maharashtra Police. [12] He has served as the President of the All India Ophthalmologists Association and the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society and is the chairman of Eye Advance Congress, an annual event started in 1996. [13] He is a visiting faculty at ONO Clinique del'Oeil Eye Institute, Geneva and at St. Luke's Institute, Texas and has trained several ophthalmologists in his career. [13] He is member of the Vision International Presbyopia Club and the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (UK) [2] and holds the Legion d' Honor of the Instituto Barraquer, Barcelona, [8] the only Indian to receive the honour. [13]
Mehta has delivered several award orations; Siva Reddy Gold Medal and Oration of the Hyderabad Ophthalmic Society, Mayurilal Gold Medal and Oration of the Madras Ophthalmic Society, Gold Medal and Oration of the Intraocular Implant Society, Dr. Vinod Arora Oration Award of the Uttarakhand State Ophthalmological Society and Prof B. S. Pendse Memorial Lecture and Oration of Indian Medical Association, Mumbai are some of them. [1] The Art of Organizing and Executing Successful International Conferences was a presentation he did at the India Convention Promotion Bureau in Hyderabad in 2009. He performed a live Presby LASIK surgery demonstration at "ConFluence - 2010" at Bengaluru and a live surgery demonstration at Video Cataracta in Milan, Italy. [13] He has received several Gold Medals such as Rajiv Gandhi Gold Medal (1991), Prof. C. H. Reshmi Gold Medal (1994), Eye Research Foundation Gold Medal, (1995) and T. Agarwal Gold Medal (2001) and the International Academy of Ophthalmology Gold Medal (2004) and Indian awards such as Ravi Bhandare Award, Contact Lens Society Appreciation Award, Om Prakash Award, North Zone Ophthalmological Society Achievement Award, and Pan Ophthalmological Award. [1] He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Zoroastrian's Children Foundation (2010), Bombay Parsee Association (2010) and Vidarbha Ophthalmological Society (2010). [1]
Mehta was the first Indian to receive the Grand Honors Award of the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago. [1] Asia Pacific Intraocular Implant Association awarded him the Lim International Award in 1997 and American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, USA honoured him with the Triple Ribbon Award in 1998. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2008 and Inter-Novation Inc. listed him among the Top Docs in the field of ophthalmology in 2011. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Recognition Award of the International Council of Cataract Surgeons (2001) and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Medical Integration Council and the West German Chemtec Foundation. Eye surgery, also known as ophthalmic surgery or ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa. Eye surgery is part of ophthalmology and is performed by an ophthalmologist or eye surgeon. The eye is a fragile organ, and requires due care before, during, and after a surgical procedure to minimize or prevent further damage. An eye surgeon is responsible for selecting the appropriate surgical procedure for the patient, and for taking the necessary safety precautions. Mentions of eye surgery can be found in several ancient texts dating back as early as 1800 BC, with cataract treatment starting in the fifth century BC. It continues to be a widely practiced class of surgery, with various techniques having been developed for treating eye problems.
Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia (nearsightedness). It was developed in 1974 by Svyatoslav Fyodorov, a Russian ophthalmologist. It has been largely supplanted by newer, more accurate operations, such as photorefractive keratectomy, LASIK, Epi-LASIK and the phakic intraocular lens.
Refractive surgery is optional eye surgery used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease or eliminate dependency on glasses or contact lenses. This can include various methods of surgical remodeling of the cornea (keratomileusis), lens implantation or lens replacement. The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. Refractive eye surgeries are used to treat common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism.
Phacoemulsification is a cataract surgery method in which the internal lens of the eye which has developed a cataract is emulsified with the tip of an ultrasonic handpiece and aspirated from the eye. Aspirated fluids are replaced with irrigation of balanced salt solution to maintain the volume of the anterior chamber during the procedure. This procedure minimises the incision size and reduces the recovery time and risk of surgery induced astigmatism.
Charles David Kelman was an American ophthalmologist, surgeon, inventor, jazz musician, entertainer, and Broadway producer. Known as the father of phacoemulsification, he developed many of the medical devices, instruments, implant lenses and techniques used in cataract surgery. In the early 1960s, he began the use of cryosurgery to remove cataracts and repair retinal detachments. Cryosurgery for cataracts remained in heavy use until 1978, when phacoemulsification, a procedure Kelman also developed in 1967, became the modern standard treatment. Kelman was given the National Medal of Technology by President George H. W. Bush and recognized as the Ophthalmologist of the Century by the International Congress of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Montreal, Canada. He was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio, and received the 2004 Lasker Award.
Cataract surgery, also called lens replacement surgery, is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed a cataract, an opaque or cloudy area. The eye's natural lens is usually replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
Marvin Leo Kwitko, FACS, FICS, FRCS, KStJ was a Canadian ophthalmologist who pioneered in cataract surgery and laser eye surgery. He is one of Canada’s most distinguished ophthalmologic writers and surgeons. Kwitko was the first doctor in Canada to insert intraocular lens implants during cataract surgery (1967) and the first doctor in Canada to perform radial keratotomy surgery (1979).
Howard V. Gimbel FRCSC, AOE, FACS, CABES, is a Canadian ophthalmologist, university professor, senior editor, and amateur musician. He is better known for his invention, along with Thomas Neuhann, of the continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), a technique employed in modern cataract surgery.
Eric John Arnott, MA, FRCS, FRCOphth was a British ophthalmologist and surgeon who specialized in cataracts, a condition which in many parts of the world still remains the principal cause of blindness. He is known for inventing new surgical techniques for treatment of various ophthalmological disorders, and received professional awards for his contributions.
Raymond Mark Stein, MD, FRCSC, DABO, is a Canadian ophthalmologist. He practices refractive and cataract surgery. He is the medical director of the Bochner Eye Institute in Toronto, Ontario and Chief of Ophthalmology at the Scarborough General Hospital.
Noshir Minoo Shroff is an Indian ophthalmologist notable for pioneering intraocular lens implantation surgery in India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2010 by the Indian government for his services to medicine.
Vijay Kumar Dada is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. An alumnus and a former chief of the Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he has written several articles on eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma. Dada, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.
Dr Amar Agarwal M.S., FRCS, F.R.C.Ophth is an Indian ophthalmologist and chairman and managing director of Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital and Eye Research Centre in India, which includes 140+ eye hospitals. He is the recipient of the Best Doctor award of the State government from then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa on 15 August 2014. He is also the past President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and Secretary General of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI).
Mahipal S. Sachdev is an Indian ophthalmologist and the Chairman of Centre for Sight, a chain of Eye Hospitals in India. He is known as one of the pioneers of Phacoemulsification procedure in India. He is the co-author of A Practical Guide to Phacoemulsification, the first Indian book on the topic. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine. He is the Chairman Scientific Committee of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India, IIRSI.
Dr Abhay R. Vasavada started Raghudeep Eye Clinic (REH) – as a cataract speciality center in 1984 Ahmedabad, India. He is the first Indian and the second Asian to be awarded the Binkhorst Medal Lecture by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) in 2011.
Burkhard Dick is a German ophthalmologist who has specialized in refractive and cataract surgery. With his many contributions to the scientific literature on this topic, he is considered one of the pioneers of employing the femtosecond laser in cataract surgery. In the "Power List 2023" ranking of the world's most influential ophthalmologists by the publication The Ophthalmologist, Burkhard Dick was listed among the Top 10.
John Marshall MBE, FMedSci, PhD, DSc, FRCPath, FRSB, FRCOphth(Hon), FRCOptom (Hon), FARVO is a British medical scientist and inventor. Currently he is the Frost Professor of Ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology UCL and Emeritus Professor King's College London. He is a pioneer of laser eye surgery.
Gerd Uwe Auffarth is a German eye surgeon and is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Heidelberg University Eye Hospital and Head of the David J. Apple Center for Vision Research which includes the David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology.
