Mohan Kameswaran is an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, medical academic and the founder of MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing, a Chennai-based institution providing advanced training in audiology and speech-language pathology. [1] He is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India and a visiting professor at Rajah Muthiah Medical College of the Annamalai University and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. [2] He has many firsts to his credit such as the performance of the first auditory brain stem implantation surgery in South and South East Asia, the first pediatric brain stem implantation surgery in Asia, the first totally implantable hearing device surgery in Asia Pacific region, and the first to introduce KTP/532 laser-assisted ENT surgery in India. [3] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine. [4]

Kameswaran was born in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu and graduated in medicine from Madras Medical College in 1976. He continued his studies at the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, Chennai to secure a post graduate specialization (MS) in otorhinolaryngology in 1981, after which he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS). [5] Later, he worked at the King Saud University, Saudi Arabia as the ENT Professor for a while. [3] In 1996, he established Madras ENT Research Foundation (MERF) and, ten years later, the MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing (MERF-ISH) in 2006 at Mandavelli, a suburban town of Chennai. The institution, has in-patient facility for ENT related treatment and conducts courses such as Bachelor of Audiology And Speech Language Pathology (BASLP), Master of Audiology And Speech Language Pathology (MASLP), and Post Graduate diploma courses, in addition to offering research facilities leading to PhD, in affiliation with Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. [6] He is associated with the Rajah Muthiah Medical College as a visiting professor and the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University as an adjunct professor.

In 2005, Kameswaran performed the first auditory brainstem implant surgery in South Asia and five years later, he performed the surgery on a child, becoming the first in Asia to perform the pediatric auditory brainstem implant. [5] He is also credited with the first Totally Implantable Hearing Device surgery and MERF is the first hospital in India to use KTP Laser in an ENT surgery which they achieved in 1999. [3] In 2013, he launched Listen App, a mobile-based application developed in association with a Belgian software firm, which works as a hearing aid as well as a music player.[ citation needed ] He is one of the founders of the Cochlear Implant Group of India and served as its president when the society was formed in November 2003. He has written a text book on the subject, Tropical Diseases in ENT and has mentored many ENT surgeons in their researches. [5] He has also published over 40 articles in peer reviewed national and international journals [7] and has organised several medical seminars and conferences, [8] [9] where he has delivered key note addresses. [10] [11]

Kameswaran is married to Indira, who is also associated with MERF in its management. [12]

Awards and honours

The year 2006 brought several honours to Kameswaran, starting with the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in January, from the Government of India. [4] This was followed by Indo-Australina Award from the Indo-Australian Association and For the Sake of Honour from the Chennai chapter of the Rotary International. [3] Honouring his introduction of Cochlear Implant Program in Sri Lanka, the President of the country presented him with the Award for Excellence of Service and he also received the Award for Service from Arthur C. Clarke. [3] The Government of Kerala awarded him the Award for Excellence the same year and National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) chose his writings for the Shri Shyam Lal Saxena Memorial Award for the best published medical work. [5] He is also an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, [13]

In 2007, he was elected as a member of the governing body of the Cochlear Implant Board for the Asia-Pacific region, making him the first Indian to receive the honour. [5] The Government of Tamil Nadu selected him for the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award in 2008 and the same year, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on him. [5]

Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a hearing disorder in which the outer hair cells of the cochlea are present and functional, but sound information is not transmitted sufficiently by the auditory nerve to the brain. Hearing loss with AN can range from normal hearing sensitivity to profound hearing loss.

Claude-Henri Chouard is a French surgeon born on 3 July 1931 in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, this Otologist has been a full member of the Académie Nationale de Médecine since 1999. He was director of the AP-HP Laboratory of Auditory Prosthesis and director of the ENT Research Laboratory at Paris-Saint-Antoine University Hospital from 1967 to 2001. He was also head of the institution's ENT Department from 1978 to 1998. In 1982, he was elected a member of the International Collegium ORL-AS. He achieved worldwide recognition in the late 1970s thanks to the work completed by his Paris laboratory's multidisciplinary team on the multichannel cochlear implant. This implanted electronic hearing device was developed at Saint-Antoine and alleviates bilateral total deafness. When implanted early in young children, it can also help overcome the spoken language problems associated with deafness.

Jitendra Mohan Hans is an Indian Otorhinolaryngologist, medical researcher and the inventor of HANS speech valve for speech rehablitation after laryngeal cancer surgery. He is a founder member of the Cochlear Implant Group of India and has been a part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sponsored project team that developed an indigenous Bionic Ear in 2014. Born on 27 November 1955, he graduated in medicine from the University of Meerut in 1978 He has served as the Honorary ENT Surgeon to the Prime Minister of India and is a government nominee at Ali Yajur Jung National Institute for Deafness, Mumbai and the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore. He is reported to have pioneered the minimally-invasive surgical techniques for cochlear implants and is a member of the advisory boards of the Union Public Service Commission and World Health Organization (WHO). The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2005, for his contributions towards medicine.

Dr Sandra Desa Souza is an ENT Head, Neck and Cochlea Implant Surgeon. She is the first Indian Fellow of the American Otological Society. She was awarded the Padma Shri India's fourth-highest civilian award in 2020. She is the first woman surgeon in the world to pioneer the Cochlear implant surgery in India and Asia in 1987. Dr. Souza was one of the first ENT surgeons in the country to perform artificial ear operations, is credited to have given the gift of hearing to thousands of patients.

Richard Charles Dowell is an Australian audiologist, academic and researcher. He holds the Graeme Clark Chair in Audiology and Speech Science at University of Melbourne. He is a former director of Audiological Services at Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
