Tatyarao Pundlikrao Lahane (born 12 February 1957) is an Indian eye surgeon and ophthalmologist. [2] He served as the Dean of Grant Medical College and J. J. Hospital, Mumbai, and set a world record with more than 162,000 cataract surgeries. He was awarded Padma Shri award in 2008, the 4th highest civilian award in India.

Early life and education

Lahane was born in Makegaon village, Renapur taluka, Latur district of Maharashtra state in a farmer's family on 12 February 1957 to father Pundlikrao and mother Anjanabai. [3] He is one of seven children of the couple. [4] At a young age, both of his kidneys were not functioning and his mother donated one of her kidneys to him. [1]

Lahane completed schooling in Latur and earned his medicine degree in 1981 from the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. In 1985, he earned his MD in Ophthalmology. [5]

Career

Lahane began his career on 17 May 1985 as a medical officer/ associate professor at the Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Medical College in Ambajogai, Beed district. [6] During 1993- 94, Lahane worked in Government hospital of Dhule. [7] As an Ophthalmologist he widely lectured about this field and worked in temporary eye-treatment camps in remotest village and trible settlement in the state. [8]

Before Lahane took over as Dean of JJ Hospital he was head of the department of ophthalmology at the hospital. As an ophthalmologist he has arranged many cataract camps nationwide and also in JJ Hospital. In 2007 he conducted his 100,000th cataract surgery in JJ Hospital, which was attended by then-Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh. He is credited for modernizing the ophthalmology department of JJ Hospital. [1] [9] [10]

As a Dean

Lahane became the Dean of Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals in 2010. As a Dean he is credited for modernising the Out Patient Department of JJ Hospital along with computerising the system. [11] He resigned from the post in 2017. [12]

Academic career

He pioneered advanced phacoemulsification technology within the government sector of Maharashtra so that every patient could take the benefit of the latest techniques of surgery. He has also reached all remote places within Maharashtra through surgical camps to treat patients who are unable to travel to hospital for their ailment. He was promoted to the position of Joint Director in 2017.

Other positions

Around 2018, Lahane was the program leader of Cataract free Maharashtra project and deputy director of DMER. [13]

At present[ when? ] he is Director, Medical Education & Research, State of Maharashtra, India.

On 1 July 2021, he retired from government service of Maharashtra state's Medical education department. [6] [7]

Awards

Lahane has won several awards for his work, including Athwale Purskar, Karweer Jivan Gaurav Purskar, Utkarsh Krutdnyata Purskar, Latur Gaurav Purskar, Dr. Mulay Smruti Purskar, Dr. DaljeetSinngh Suvarnpadak, Lifetime achievement award, Giants International award and others. [5]

In 2008, Lahane was awarded Padma Shri award in 2008, the 4th highest civilian award in India. [14] [15]

In 2022, he won the Shahu Award. [5]

Dr Tatya Lahane - Angaar...Power is Within, an Indian biographical film on the doctor which released in 2018. Directed by Virag Wankhede and starring Makarand Anaspure in the titular role, it covers his life from early childhood until the organization of the cataract camps. [16]

Gullapalli Nageswara Rao is an Indian ophthalmologist, the chairman of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) and the founder of the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. A former associate professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Rochester, Rao is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India. He was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri. He was elected in 2017 to the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame instituted by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Vijay Kumar Dada is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. An alumnus and a former chief of the Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he has written several articles on eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma. Dada, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Mahipal S. Sachdev is an Indian ophthalmologist and the Chairman of Centre for Sight, a chain of Eye Hospitals in India. He is known as one of the pioneers of the phacoemulsification procedure in India. He is the co-author of A Practical Guide to Phacoemulsification, the first Indian book on the topic. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine. He is the Chairman Scientific Committee of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India, IIRSI.

Tony Fernandez is an Indian ophthalmologist, noted for his contributions in founding and fostering an eye care centre at Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly, thereby elevating the hospital from the level of a medical dispensary into an 800-bedded hospital. He founded the first eye bank in the private sector in Kerala and is a former president of the All India Ophthalmological Society. He has delivered many award orations including the Dr Sriniavasa Rao Memorial Oration Award (1995) of the Karnataka Ophthalmic Society and has initiated a social project, Kazhcha-Vision 2020, in association with South Indian film actor, Mammootty, for providing free cataract treatment to financially compromised people of Kerala. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine. Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons have instituted an award, Padmasree Dr. Tony Fernandez Award, in his honour, awarded annually to the best video on ophthalmology.

Keiki R. Mehta, an Indian ophthalmologist, medical researcher and writer, is considered by many as the father of Phacoemulsification in India. He is the Chief Surgical and Medical Director at Mehta International Eye Institute, a Mumbai-based specialty eye hospital founded by him. He is known to be the first surgeon to perform a Radial keratotomy in India and is credited with the development of the first soft eye implant in the world, and the Keiki Mehta BP Valve Glaucoma Shunt, a medical implant used in the treatment of neovascular‚ congenital and uveitic glaucoma. He is a recipient of several honours including the Grand Honors Award of the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago and the Triple Ribbon Award of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to Medicine.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vikas Mahatme</span> Indian ophthalmologist

Dr. Vikas Mahatme is Padmashri Awarded Indian ophthalmologist, social entrepreneur, visionary and a former member of the Parliament in Rajya Sabha. Born in Amravati, he comes from Nagpur in the state of Maharashtra. He is well known across Maharashtra for his charitable and social works. He founded a charitable trust – S. Mahatme Eye Welfare Charitable Trust that runs Mahatme Eye Bank eye hospital in Nagpur as well as branches in Mumbai, Amravati, Gadchiroli and Pune. He received the Padma Shri for his charitable community work as an ophthalmologist. In June 2016, Mahatme was the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections, which he won unopposed. His candidature was strongly backed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. He belongs to the Dhangar community. He has expressed support for implementing Scheduled Tribe reservation for Dhangar community in Maharashtra and is its first community member to get elected to parliament. He is currently a member of the Indian Nursing Council.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">M. M. Joshi (ophthalmologist)</span> Indian ophthalmologist

Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi is an Indian ophthalmologist and the founder of M. M. Joshi Eye Institute, a 75-bedded super-specialty eye hospital, located in Hubli and Dharwad, and the largest in the region. The first post graduate private practitioner in the state of Karnataka, he is one of the founders of Karnataka Ophthalmic Society and a recipient of Rajyotsava Prashasti, the second highest civilian award of the Government of Karnataka. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

Ashok Laxmanrao Kukade is an Indian surgeon and author, who was awarded Padma Bhushan (2019), India's third-highest civilian award for his work in the medical field. He is the co-founder of Vivekanand Hospital and Research Center along with Dr.Firke, Dr.Alurkar in Latur, Maharashtra.

Sundaram Natarajan is an Indian ophthalmologist. In 2002, he started a free clinic in Dharavi, a slum in Mumbai, and treated more than 8,000 people. He has also held free camps in various other suburbs of Mumbai such as Mankhurd and Govandi to treat the economically poor. In 2016, he also held a camp in Kashmir to operate and cure the victims of pellet gun firings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ravindra and Smita Kolhe</span> Indian social activists

Ravindra Kolhe and Smita Kolhe are Indian social activists and doctors working for tribal people in remote village areas of Bairagarh in Melghat region of Amravati district in Maharashtra. Ravindra Kolhe completed his MBBS in 1985 and MD in 1987 from Government Medical College, Nagpur. He has been actively working in Bairagarh area since 1985. He married Smita, also a doctor specializing in Ayurveda and Homeopathy, and together continued their work. They charged a nominal fee of ₹1 (1.3¢ US) for treatment and also run a Government ration shop. Apart from medicinal help, the couple also makes general awareness campaigns for the tribals. The works of Kolhe couple has resulted in reduction of infant mortality rate from 200 per 1000 to 40 and pre-school mortality rate from 400 per 1000 to 100. In 2019, the couple received Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award.
