Gurumukh Sajanmal Sainani is an Indian general physician, medical researcher, medical writer and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. [1] He is a former director of the All India Heart Foundation and the incumbent director of Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. [2] He is a recipient of the highest Indian award in the medical category, Dr. B. C. Roy Award, from the Medical Council of India and the rank of Honorary Brigadier from the President of India. [3] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2000. [4]

Biography

Sainani, after graduating in medicine with a first class which earned him the Prince of Wales Prize, [3] continued his studies to obtain a PhD from Pune University. [5] Later, he pursued his research to secure a DSc, reported to be the first doctor to receive a DSc degree purely on the merit of research, from Pune University. [6] He worked at Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals, Mumbai for several years, reportedly rose to the post of the Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine at the age of 32, and becoming the Emeritus Professor of the institution, post retirement. [1] During this period, he did advanced training in cardiology for two years in Chicago and one year in London. Joining Jaslok Hospital, he serves as a senior consultant and is the Head of the Hypertension Clinic at the hospital. [2]

Sainani is a Fellow of several medical institutions around the world such as the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians and Royal Society of Medicine among others. [7] He is an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and has received honorary DLitt from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. [8] He is former president of the Cardiological Society of India [9] and was the chief editor of the 1992 and 1999 editions of API Text Book of Medicine of the Association of Physicians of India [10] He is a former editor of several medical journals, including the Current Concepts in Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus. [2] He has participated in the International Congress of Editors of Medical Journals, conducted by the World Health Organization in Copenhagen. [3] [6]

The Indian Association of Clinical Medicine (IACM) has instituted G. S. Sainani Oration, an annual event in his honour. [11] The Geriatric Society of India also has instituted an annual oration under the title, "Prof. GS Sainani Oration". [12] Sainani, a recipient of the highest Indian medical award of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, [3] [6] has received several other honours such as Priyadarshani Award, Sindhu Ratan Award, Gifted and Master Teacher Award of the Association of Physicians of India and Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Brigadier title of the President of India. [3] The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2000. [4]

Sainani married Pushpa, a medical doctor, on 18 May 1963, and the couple has a daughter, Renu, and two sons, Rajesh and Kumar. The family lives in Mumbai. [6]

Bibliography

Sainani has published four books. Clinical Cases and Pearls in Medicine, is a text on diseases and clinical practices, annotated with cases handled by him during his career [13] while A Primer of Cardiac Diagnosis: the physical and technical study of the cardiac patient, is a monograph on cardiac diseases. [14] Manual of Clinical and Practical Medicine is a medical handbook and covers topics such as patient medical history and general physiological examination, supported by 100 case studies. [15] Medical Therapeutics is a text book on the principles of therapeutics and drug prescription guidelines of several diseases. [16] Besides, he has written over 550 medical papers in peer reviewed national and international journals. [1]

He died on 23 May 2020 during sleep when he was home quarantined due to COVID-19 positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic in India, in New Delhi.

Ashok Seth is an Indian interventional cardiologist, credited with the performance of over 50,000 angiograms and 20,000 angioplasties, which has been included in the Limca Book of Records, a book for achievements and records from an Indian perspective. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Ireland and serves as the chief cardiologist, holding the chairs of the department of cardiovascular sciences and cardiology council at the Fortis Healthcare. Seth, a recipient of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, was honored by the Government of India with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri, in 2003, followed by Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award, in 2015.

Narayana Panicker Kochupillai, popularly known as N. P. Kochupillai, is an Indian clinical endocrinologist, Professor Emeritus of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a former head of the department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, known to have contributed to the understanding of endemically prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorders. A winner of 2002 Dr. B. C. Roy Award, he was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Susil Chandra Munshi is an Indian interventional cardiologist and the Director of the department of Cardiac Research and Education at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Indian College of Cardiology, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Indian College of Physicians, Cardiological Society of India and the Indian Society of Electrocardiology. Pradeep Kumar Dave is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the chairman of Medeor Hospital, New Delhi. He graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and joined the Institute as a member of faculty, superannuating in 2003 as a director. Later, he joined Medeor Hospital as the head of the Orthopedic Department and is the incumbent chairman of its advisory board.

Khushwant Lal Wig (1904–1986) was an Indian physician, medical academic, writer and the director of the All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1964, for his contributions to the Medical science.

Shantilal Jamnadas Mehta (1905–1997) was an Indian surgeon, institution builder and medical academic, who established the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai. His contributions were also reported in the establishment of Tata Memorial Centre and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. In 1971, the Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to medicine.

Lakhumal Hiranand Hiranandani (1917–2013) was an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, social activist and philanthropist, known for pioneering several surgical procedures which later came to be known as Dr. Hiranandani's Operations. He was the founder chairman of Hiranandani Foundation Trust which runs two schools in India and was reported to have been active in the social movement against organ trade in India. He was a recipient of the Golden Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the first Indian and the fifth overall to receive the honour. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine and society.

Shantilal Chhaganlal Sheth (1912–1990) was an Indian pediatrician and the president of several medical institutions including the Medical Council of India, the apex body for matters related to medical administration and education in India. An honorary surgeon commander at the Indian Navy, he served as the honorary physician to the President of India. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine.

Darab Jehangir Jussawala (1915–1999) was an Indian medical-cum-surgical oncologist, medical writer and the director of Tata Memorial Centre. He was the co-founder of Indian Cancer Society, along with Naval Tata in 1951, and the founder of the Indian Cancer Rehabilitation Centre in Parel, Mumbai, in 1956, the first such centre in India and the largest in Asia. He served as the director of Lady Ratan Tata Medical and Research Center and as the honorary consultant at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Jaslok Hospital. An elected fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the American College of Surgeons, he was a recipient of the Dhanwantari Award as well as several Oration Awards. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1975, for his contributions to Medicine.

Kewal Kishan Talwar is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic and writer, and a former chairman of the Medical Council of India. He is a former director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and is reported to have performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia. He is also credited with the introduction of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India. He is a recipient of several honours including B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. Daljeet Singh Gambhir is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic, researcher and inventor and the Group Director of Cardiology at Kailash Group of Hospitals and Heart Institute, Delhi. He is the inventor of Infinnium Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent, a reportedly cheaper drug-eluting stent which he first presented at the EuroPCR meeting held in Paris in 2003. A fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and an honorary fellow of the Indian College of Cardiology, he is reported to have performed over 10,000 coronary interventions. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.
