Alka Kriplani is an Indian gynecologist, [1] [2] medical writer and academic, known for her contributions to the fields of Reproductive Endocrinology and Gynaecological Endoscopy. [3] [4] She was professor and the Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. [5] A recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2007, [3] she was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. [6]

Biography

Alka Kriplani graduated in Medicine (MBBS) and secured a master's degree in gynecology and obstetrics (MD) [7] from Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College, Raipur, in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. [8] Later, she joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and is a professor and the head of the gynecology and obstetrics department there. [8] [9] She is an honorary Fellow of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) of London [4] [7] [9] and holds the fellowships of Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS), Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FICOG), Indian College of Maternal and Child Health (FICMCH) and the Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA). [10]

Dr. Kriplani is the president of the Gynaecological Endocrine Society of India (GESI) since 2011, a former president of Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Delhi (AOGD) and a former vice president of the Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecological Societies of India [4] [10] and the Delhi Gynaecological Endoscopists Society. [3] She has served AOGD in various capacities in the past [10] and is a former member of the governing council of the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, [4] a subsidiary of FOGSI. [3] She has also been a member of the editorial board of the Asian Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. [3]

Kriplani is reported to have been involved in research and clinical trials [11] in the field of gynecology and her findings have been recorded by way of several papers published in peer reviewed national and international journals. [12] [13] [14] [15] She is the author of 691 publications [10] composed of 2 books, [16] 269 medical papers, [17] [18] 271 abstracts [4] and has contributed 53 chapters in books [19] published by other authors. [3] [4] She has delivered over 500 guest lectures in India and abroad, [10] conducted 79 live workshops [10] and holds regular endoscopy training programs at AIIMS. [3] [4] [20]

Kriplani, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, [21] is a recipient of several awards and honours such as C. L. Jhaveri (1995), Dr. Neera Agarwal Gold Medal (1999), K. P. Tamaskar award (2002), DMA Medical Teachers Award (2005), Jagadishwari Mishra Award (2006), Rashtriya Gaurav Award (2007), IMAAMS Distinguished Service Award (2007), Bayer Schering APCOC Talents Encouragement Award (2008), Dr. Nimish Shelat Research Prize in Reproductive Endocrinology (2010) and DGF Women of the Year Award (2010). The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) is a professional organization representing practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology in India. With 262 member societies and over 37,000 individual members spread over the length and breadth of the country, FOGSI is probably one of the largest membership based organizations of specialized professionals.

Dr. Sheila Balakrishnan is an obstetrician and a gynaecologist. She has authored three books on obstetrics and gynaecology. She is currently the associate professor at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Government Medical college, Trivandrum. She has pursued her MD and DNB from Trivandrum Medical college. She was awarded membership at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1994 and then conferred fellowship in the year 2008. She has received Commonwealth scholarship award in the United Kingdom. She is a member of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Currently, she is a member of the contraception and medical disorders committee of FOGSI.
In November 2013, the medical team headed by Dr. Balakrishnan announced the birth of South India's first in vitro fertilization babies in Trivandrum Medical College Hospital. She has authored three books, Textbook of Obstetrics, Textbook of Gynaecology and Clinical case discussion in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has published numerous research papers.

Indira Hinduja is an Indian gynecologist, obstetrician and infertility specialist based in Mumbai. She pioneered the Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) technique resulting in the birth of India's first GIFT baby on 4 January 1988. Previously she delivered India's first test tube baby at KEM Hospital on 6 August 1986. She is also credited for developing an oocyte donation technique for menopausal and premature ovarian failure patients, giving the country's first baby out of this technique on 24 January 1991.

Lalit Kumar is an Indian oncologist, known to have contributed to the development of low cost medical facilities in Delhi. The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine.

Raj Baveja is an Indian gynecologist, obstetrician and the former head of the department of gynecology and obstetrics at the Motilal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad. She also serves as the honorary Medical Superintendent of the Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital, Allahabad. She hails from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is the author several medical papers on adolescent gynecology, pregnancy and child birth management. She has assisted a working group on Care in Normal Birth of the World Health Organization. and headed an Indian Council of Medical Research task force on contraception in 2000. She is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Government of India awarded her the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1983.

Vera Hingorani was an Indian gynaecologist, obstetrician, and medical writer who was a professor and head of the department of gynaecology and obstetrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Shiela Mehra is an Indian gynaecologist, Obstetrician and a director of the department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Moolchand Hospital, New Delhi. A 1959 graduate of the Lady Hardinge Medical College, she secured the degrees of DRCOG and MRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK. She is a Fellow of the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ICOG) and a recipient of awards such as the Radha Raman Award (1998) and Life Time Achievement Award of the Indian Medical Association (2006). The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 1991.

Dr Malvika Sabharwal is an Indian gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon and obstetrician at the Nova Specialty Hospitals of the Apollo Healthcare Group and at Jeewan Mala Hospital, New Delhi. The team led by her has been credited with the successful performance of the removal of the largest recorded fibroid through laparoscopic surgery. She leads the Gynae Endoscopy, a team of 140 doctors, involved in endoscopic surgical practices related to gynecology.

Bhalchandra Nilkanth Purandare, was an Indian gynaecologist. He was the son of Dr. Nilkanth Anant Purandare. He was the director of the Dr. N.A. Purandare Medical Centre for Family Welfare and Research, Mumbai. He served as the president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1973 to 1976 and the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynecological Society (MOGS) from 1966 to 1968. He was an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (1961). The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine. His brother Dr. Vithal N. Purandare was also an acclaimed obstetrician and gynaecologist, renowned for his surgical prowess. He served as President of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecology society(1973–1975) and FOGSI President in 1981. Their nephew Dr. C. N. Purandare, is a prominent gynaecologist and an ex President of FIGO.

Jaideep Malhotra is an India-based gynecologist, infertility specialist and an ace sonologist. She is the founder of the Infertility Centre of Rainbow IVF and also serves as the director of the hospital. Malhotra received award from Prime minister of Nepal for first 100 IVF babies of Nepal and her clinic, Rainbow IVF was first in Uttar Pradesh for successful IVF, ICSI, TESA, twins and triplets.
