John Warhurst is a British music and sound supervisor. [2] He won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing for the film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). [3] [4] [5]

Biography

He was born in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. [6] Warhurst graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a BMus (Hons) degree in Orchestral Composition and Arrangement and a Master’s degree in Electro-Acoustic Composition. [1] Warhurst's professional career started in 1998 when he became a music editing assistant in London. [1] Warhurst has worked on numerous films including The Woman in Black , 127 Hours , Hannibal Rising , The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. [1]

In 2012 he was part of the sound team who won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound at the 66th British Academy Film Awards for Les Misérables . [1] He won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards and the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing for the film Bohemian Rhapsody at the 91st Academy Awards. [1]

The Academy Award for Best Film Editing is one of the annual awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Nominations for this award are closely correlated with the Academy Award for Best Picture. For 33 consecutive years, 1981 to 2013, every Best Picture winner had also been nominated for the Film Editing Oscar, and about two thirds of the Best Picture winners have also won for Film Editing. The Academy Award for Best Sound is an Academy Award that recognizes the finest or most euphonic sound mixing, recording, sound design, and sound editing. The first were Murray Spivack and Jack Solomon for Hello, Dolly!. It is generally awarded to the production sound mixers, re-recording mixers, and supervising sound editors of the winning film. John Ottman is an American film composer, director, and editor. He is best known for collaborating with director Bryan Singer, composing and/or editing many of his films, including Public Access (1993), The Usual Suspects (1995), Superman Returns (2006), Valkyrie (2008) and Jack the Giant Slayer (2013), as well as the X-Men film series. For his work on Singer's 2018 Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Ottman won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.

The American Cinema Editors Award for Best Edited Animated Feature Film is one of the annual awards given by the American Cinema Editors. This award was first given out in 2010. As of 2024, both The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are the only films which have won the award without also winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Paul Massey is an English sound engineer working based in Southern California. He has been nominated for ten Academy Awards in the category Best Sound. He has worked on 200-plus films since 1982. He won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2019 for Bohemian Rhapsody along with John Casali and Tim Cavagin. In 2022 Massey received the Cinema Audio Society’s Career Achievement Award at the 58th annual CAS Awards.

Simon Hayes is a British sound engineer. Hayes won an Academy Award for Best Sound at the 85th Academy Awards for his work on Les Misérables. He won a BAFTA for Best Sound for the same film. In 2022, the 94th Academy Awards included Hayes as a nominee for Best Sound Mixing for his work on No Time to Die.

Tom Cross is an American television and film editor. He is known for his collaborations with Damien Chazelle including Whiplash (2014) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing as well as La La Land (2016), and First Man (2018).

Bohemian Rhapsody is a 2018 biographical musical drama film that focuses on the life of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British rock band Queen, from the formation of the band in 1970 to their 1985 Live Aid performance at the original Wembley Stadium. It was directed by Bryan Singer from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten, and produced by Graham King and Queen manager Jim Beach. It stars Rami Malek as Mercury, with Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Tom Hollander, and Mike Myers in supporting roles. Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor also served as consultants. He is best known for his work with James Mangold on the films Ford v Ferrari (2019), Logan (2017), 3:10 to Yuma (2007), and Walk the Line (2005). Sylvester won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing at the 92nd Academy Awards for Ford v Ferrari and BAFTA Award for Best Sound at the 59th British Academy Film Awards for Walk the Line. He has been a member of BAFTA since 2007.

John Casali is a British-American sound engineer. He won an Academy Award in the category Best Sound for the film Bohemian Rhapsody.
