Breathe: Tackling the Climate Emergency(also titled Breathe: How to Win A Greener World and Breathe: Seven Ways to Win a Greener World) is a non-fiction by the Mayor of LondonSadiq Khan. It was published on 25 May 2023 by the Penguin Random House imprint, Cornerstone.[1]
Much of the book draws on Khan's experience in implementing the Ultra Low Emission Zone.[3] In the book, Khan reveals he was sent a bullet in the post "at the height" of the anti-ULEZ protests.[4]
Khan was inspired to write Breathe after his asthma diagnosis, which he puts down to breathing London's "polluted air".[5][6] Khan received his asthma diagnosis after struggling to give a speech at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference.[2]
The book draws on Khan's view that clean air should be viewed as a human right.[7]
Reception
Breathe received mostly positive reviews from critics.
Breathe was described in a review in the Guardian as a "breath of fresh air".[1]
The construction of the Silvertown Tunnel was criticised as hypocritical, when contrasted with the themes of Breathe in a review in the Byline Times.[8]
