Brendan Angelides, formerly known by his stage names Eskmo and Welder, is an American electronic music producer and composer. [1] He has released music on the record labels Interscope, Ninja Tune, Planet Mu, and Warp Records. [2] NPR's Bob Boilen described him as "part musician, part magician". [3] to introduce his 2015 Tiny Desk Performance.

Contents

Angelides has composed scores for film, television, and videogames. In 2024, he was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his score on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage. [4] Television series include the entire seven seasons of Showtime's Billions, Showtime's Superpumped, Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and Netflix's Echoes. Most recently, Angelides co-composed the score for Darren Aronofsky's Postcard From Earth, alongside his collaborators in the Echo Society, which is showing for two years at the Las Vegas Sphere. Career

Albums

Angelides' self-titled album, Eskmo , was released on Ninja Tune in 2010. [6] BBC Music said of the album "..Sufficient mind-melting invention here – prior reference points or otherwise – to render Eskmo a hotter property than that chilly moniker might immediately imply." [7] He released the Language and "Terra" EPs on Ancestor in 2012 and 2013 respectively. [8]

In 2015, his follow up album SOL, a concept album about the Sun, was released on Apollo / R&S records. [9] It featured the artwork of UK feather sculpture artist Kate MccGwire. [10]

In April 2017, Interscope released the original score album written by Angelides for the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why . Alongside the score, it featured a cover song of Yazoo's "Only You" produced by Angelides for Selena Gomez. [11] Earlier in 2017, Milan Records released the original score for the Showtime series Billions. [12]

In 2023, Angelides released Oxygen on his own imprint Ancestor, intertwining his signature electronic palette with an array of orchestral incantations performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. [13]

Film / TV / video games

Angelides is the composer for all four seasons of Netflix's original series 13 Reasons Why and all seven seasons of Showtime's TV series Billions . [14] In 2020, he scored the feature film Naked Singularity [15] and the VR experience Minimum Mass, followed by Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber (Showtime) and Echoes (Netflix) in 2022.

In 2023, he composed the soundtrack for Assassin's Creed Mirage , working with the New York Arabic Orchestra, Layth Siddiq and Akram Haddad. [16] He was nominated for a BAFTA for his work. [17]

Angelides also composed music for Darren Aronofsky's Postcard from Earth film alongside the Echo Society, which was premiered at the Sphere in Las Vegas. [18]

Social outreach

In September 2015, Angelides announced a project entitled FeelHarmonic. Its role being: "FeelHarmonic connects creatives, from a variety of fields, to collaborate on bringing the deaf community new ways to experience sound. It is the first community-based outreach program being launched under The Echo Society umbrella." [19]

The Echo Society

In December 2013, Angelides helped create a Los Angeles–based collective called The Echo Society. Made up of composers, visual designers and engineers, the group has put on multiple events in various locations throughout Los Angeles featuring large orchestral ensembles mixed with electronic music. [20] Other notable composers involved are Joseph Trapanese, Rob Simonsen, Jeremy Zuckerman, Benjamin Wynn, Nathan Johnson, and Judson Crane. [21]

<i>Assassins Creed</i> Video game series

Assassin's Creed is a historical action-adventure video game series and media franchise published by Ubisoft and developed mainly by its studio Ubisoft Montreal using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives. The Assassin's Creed series is a collection of novels by various authors, set within the fictional universe of the Assassin's Creed video game franchise created by Ubisoft. The books are set across various time periods and, like the games, revolve around the secret war fought for centuries between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. The series includes both direct novelizations of several Assassin's Creed games, and books that function as standalone narratives, although some of these tie-in with one or more of the games in the franchise. British publishing house Penguin Books was responsible for the publication of most of the novels in the series, as well as their respective audiobook versions, until 2020, when Aconyte Books took over as the main publisher of the series.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series. Assassin's Creed is a 2016 historical science fiction action film based on the video game franchise published by Ubisoft. The film is directed by Justin Kurzel, written by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, and stars Michael Fassbender, as well as Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams. The film is set in the same universe as the video games but features an original story that expands the series' mythology. The plot revolves around Callum "Cal" Lynch (Fassbender), who is abducted by the Abstergo Foundation because of his heritage. Cal's ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, was a member of the Assassin Brotherhood—a fictional organization inspired by the real-life Order of Assassins—active during the Spanish Inquisition in the late 15th-century, who swore to protect the Apple of Eden, an artifact believed to contain the key to humanity's free will. Cal must accept his Assassin heritage and stop Abstergo, the Templar Order of the modern-day, from finding the Apple and using it to enslave humanity.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is a 2023 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft. The game is the thirteenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla. While its historical timeframe precedes that of Valhalla, its modern-day framing story succeeds Valhalla's own. Set in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age—in particular during the Anarchy at Samarra—the story follows Basim Ibn Ishaq, a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones to fight for peace and liberty, against the Order of the Ancients, who desire peace through control. The main narrative focuses on Basim's internal struggle between his duties as a Hidden One and his desire to uncover his mysterious past.
