The University of Nevada,Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public land-grant research university in Paradise,Nevada. The 332-acre (134 ha) campus is about 1.6 mi (2.6 km) east of the Las Vegas Strip. It was formerly part of the University of Nevada from 1957 to 1969. It includes the Shadow Lane Campus,just east of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada,which houses both School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. UNLV's law school,the William S. In 2000,Wynn sold his company,Mirage Resorts,to MGM Grand Inc.,resulting in the formation of MGM Mirage. Wynn later took his company Wynn Resorts public in an initial public offering and was Wynn Resorts' CEO and Chairman of the Board until February 6,2018,when he announced his resignation. He is a prominent donor to the Republican Party and was the finance chair of the Republican National Committee from January 2017 to January 2018,when he resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations.
The settlement of Las Vegas,Nevada was founded in 1905 after the opening of a railroad that linked Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. The stopover attracted some farmers to the area,and fresh water was piped in to the settlement. In 1911,the town was incorporated as part of the newly founded Clark County. Urbanization took off in 1931 when work started on the Boulder Dam,bringing a huge influx of young male workers,for whom theaters and casinos were built,largely by the Mafia. Electricity from the dam also enabled the building of many new hotels along the Strip. The arrival of Howard Hughes in 1966 did much to offset mob influence and helped turn Las Vegas into more of a family tourist center,now classified as a Mega resort.
