Brent Taylor (Memphis-R) is a Republican Tennessee State Senator representing District 31. He assumed office on November 8,2022 and his term ends on November 3,2026. He replaced Brian Kelsey who pled guilty to campaign finance charges and did not seek reelection. [1]
Taylor won in the general election on November 8,2022 defeating Democratic nominee Ruby-Powell Dennis. He has become known for his tough on crime stance. [2] [3] [4] He voiced his support for SJR0919,an amendment to the Constitution of Tennessee that would remove bail for major capital crimes such as terrorism,second degree murder,aggravated rape of a child,aggravated rape,and grave torture. Born on August 9,1968,he lives in Eads,Tennessee with his wife Kimberly and their two children. Taylor earned a degree in mortuary science from Northwest Mississippi Community College. His career experience includes working as a funeral director. [6] Taylor started his business by taking out a home equity loan to buy his first funeral home. After many acquisition,Taylor's business grew to be the largest after-death care business in the Mid-South. He sold his business for nearly $20 million before announcing his intention to run for the state Senate.
The Tennessee Democratic Party (TNDP) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in Tennessee. The party was founded in 1826 initially as the Jacksonian Party. The Tennessee Democratic Party was born out of President Andrew Jackson's populist philosophy of Jacksonian democracy in the mid to late-1820s. After Jackson left office,the Democratic Party struggled in the state as the Whig Party would go on to be the dominant party in Tennessee until its collapse after the 1852 Election. Prior to the Civil War,as a result of the collapse of the former Whig Party,the Democratic Party became the dominant party in the state. After the war ended,the Republican Party would be the dominant political party during Reconstruction,but once Reconstruction ended,the Democratic Party would dominate Tennessee Politics up until 2011 when the Republican Party would gain firm control of Tennessee State Government.
