Brewer Community School

The Brewer Community School is a primary school in Brewer, Maine, United States and is the largest primary school in the state. [1] It replaces the five elementary and middle schools in the city, which were built as early as the 1920s. [1]

Its 156,000 sq ft (14,500 m2) area contains 71 classrooms for up to 1,050 pre-K through 8th-grade students. [1] Each of its five wings, representing parts of Brewer's history, contains two grade levels. [1] The design of each wing is based on its theme. The desk chairs in the River wing are blue; the ceiling in the Ice wing is jagged. [1]

There are three playgrounds on the campus, all of which are ADA-compliant. [2] The school includes a 488-seat performing arts center. [1]

The entire campus was built for approximately $33.4 million. [1] Brewer residents authorized the school in 2007, with 85% of the voters in favor. [3] The school was built on the grounds of the Pendleton Street School, which had previously been condemned. [3]

Green design was prominent in the construction. The air circulation recycles heat when possible, and specially-shaped windows, skylights, and solar tubes minimize the use of artificial lighting. Leftover food from the cafeteria will be composted on-site. [4]

The school's name was chosen by the Brewer School District Trustees at a meeting on September 1, 2010. [5]

Bangor Auditorium Sports arena in Bangor, Maine

The Bangor Auditorium was a 5,948 seat multi-purpose arena located in downtown Bangor, Maine. It opened October 1, 1955 and was used for concerts, sporting events, circus performances, political rallies, as well as trade shows with 16,000 square feet of space. It was demolished in 2013. It shared the same complex as the Bangor Civic Center. For decades, it hosted the Maine Principals' Association basketball tournament each February, as well as the graduation ceremonies for Bangor High School in June. It also served as the home of the Maine Windjammers of the Continental Basketball Association, and the University of Maine men's and women's basketball teams for a few seasons until 1992. The V-shape style of the building gave it the look of giant wings and adds to the atmosphere. A statue of Paul Bunyan towered outside as a symbol of the city's prosperous history as a lumber port in the early-to-mid-19th century.

Cushing House Student dormitory at Vassar College

Cushing House is a four-story co-ed dormitory on Vassar College's campus in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. A response to freshmen overcrowding, the college's Board of Trustees hurried the Allen & Collens-designed building, named for college librarian and alumna trustee Florence M. Cushing, to construction and completion in 1927. Cushing was originally designed as eight smaller houses with euthenic principles in mind, but ended up as a single U-shaped dormitory in the Old English manor house style with Jacobean interior furnishings. Students of all grades may live in the house, which houses up to 202 in single, double, and triple rooms and are referred to as "Cushlings". Throughout Cushing's history, various proposals and plans have incited controversy among the building's residents, including designating one of its wings as all-black housing and converting one of its common areas into eight single rooms. Contemporary reviewers have looked favorably upon Cushing's aesthetic qualities, declaring it to be one of Vassar's most beautiful buildings.

Cary Weston is an American politician from Maine. A Republican from Bangor, Weston served on the Bangor City Council from 2009 to 2012. In 2011–12, Weston served as the Council Chairman (Mayor). Prior to his election to City Council, Weston was the founding chair of a networking group of young professionals in their 20s and 30s called 'Fusion Bangor'.
