Brian Galgut SC is a South African lawyer and former Deputy Judge President of the High Court in the Natal Provincial Division.
Galgut was born in Pretoria and educated at Pretoria Boys High School. He was awarded a B.A. (Law) degree from Stellenbosch University in 1958,and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Pretoria in 1960. [1]
After completing his law degree at the University of Pretoria in 1960,Galgut was admitted as an advocate and practised as a member of the Pretoria Bar. He was accorded senior advocate status in 1979 and remained in practice,doing mostly civil work,until appointed as a judge in the Natal Provincial Division of the High Court in 1985. [2]
In 2001 he was appointed as Deputy Judge President of the Division,and for three months in each of 2001 and 2004 served as the Acting Judge President. [1] In 2004,having served for 20 years,Galgut elected to go off active service as a judge. [2]
He has subsequently served as arbitrator in various civil claims,and in May 2007 was appointed as the Ombudsman for Long-term Insurance,a post he held until May 2013. [3] Since 2014 he has served as Internal Arbitrator at Santam Limited.
The High Court of South Africa is a superior court of law in South Africa. It is divided into nine provincial divisions,some of which sit in more than one location. Each High Court division has general jurisdiction over a defined geographical area in which it is situated. The decisions of a division are binding on magistrates' courts within its area of jurisdiction. The High Court has jurisdiction over all matters,but it usually only hears civil matters involving more than 400,000 rand,and serious criminal cases. It also hears any appeals or reviews from magistrates' courts and other lower courts.

Pius Nkonzo Langa SCOB was Chief Justice of South Africa,serving on the Constitutional Court. He was appointed to the bench in 1994 by Nelson Mandela,he became Deputy Chief Justice in 2001 and was elevated as Chief Justice in 2005 by Thabo Mbeki. He retired in October 2009. He served as the Chancellor of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from 2006 to 2010. He died in 2013 at the age 74 and following a long illness.

Alexander John Milne was a South African judge from Natal Province. He was Judge President of the Natal Provincial Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa from 1982 to 1987. During that time,he was reputed as a liberal judge on the basis of his judgements in the Pietermaritzburg Treason Trial and other cases involving anti-apartheid protest. He joined the Natal Division in 1971,was promoted to the Appellate Division in 1988,and served on the latter bench until his death in 1993.
