Brighton Rock was a Canadian hard rock band, who released three albums in their home country during the 1980s and 1990s. They broke up in 1991, before reuniting and releasing a live album in 2002.
The band was formed in 1982 in Niagara Falls by guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs, along with vocalist Gerry McGhee, keyboardist Martin Victor and drummer Mark Cavarzan. Initially, the band's name was Heart Attack. After their song "Breakin' Down The Barricade" was included in CILQ's 1984 Q107 Homegrown compilation, [1] they changed their name to Brighton Rock and released the EP Brighton Rock the following year.
They signed to WEA for their 1986 debut album, Young, Wild and Free , which was produced by Michael Wagener with pre-production assistance from Jack Richardson. [2] [3] By this time, Martin Victor had left to join a band called Buxx, and been replaced on keyboards by Johnny Rogers. Young, Wild and Free spawned the Canadian hit singles "We Came to Rock" and "Can't Wait for the Night". The album charted at No. 82 in Canada and was certified gold in 1989.
In 1988, Brighton Rock released the album Take a Deep Breath , which was produced entirely by Richardson. [4] [5] [3] This was the band's most commercially-successful album. In Canada, it peaked at #22 and was #11 on the Top 50 Cancon Albums of '89. Its singles, "One More Try", "Hangin' High & Dry" and "Can't Stop the Earth from Shakin'" charted at #38, #77 and #65. Following its release, the band toured the UK for the first time. [6]
While writing for their next album, the band realized that they no longer needed keyboards. McGhee stated, "We didn't feel that keyboards were part of us anymore. There's really no place for them in our musical direction." [7] Fraser noted: "We definitely did not want to repeat ourselves on that record, and keyboards were becoming too polished sounding for what was being released at the time. A lot of tougher sounds were becoming more popular with the likes of Guns N' Roses, and Skid Row, and keyboards were considered uncool, and wimpy. Most of the new songs I was writing did not lend themselves to keyboards." [8] Rogers left the band and replaced for touring purposes by a second guitarist, Greg Bioleau, who had played in McGhee's first band, The Rockers. At the Juno Awards of 1990, Brighton Rock was nominated as Most Promising Group of the Year--the award went to The Tragically Hip.
In 1991, Brighton Rock released the album Love Machine . The album didn't chart, but the single "Hollywood Shuffle" earned the #6 spot on the Cancon: To Watch chart. The band toured Ontario to support the album, then broke up. Their last show was at the Toronto nightclub Spectrum in June 1992. As Fraser explained, they were suffering from a combination of burn-out from an exhausting touring schedule, [9] and frustration at not being able to break into the US market. They had fired their manager and couldn't find someone who could help them move to the next level. McGhee decided to move to Los Angeles; [10] Fraser joined Helix. [11] At the Juno Awards of 1992, Love Machine was nominated as Hard Rock Album of the Year.
The band regrouped for a reunion tour in 2001, releasing the live album A Room for Five Live in 2002. [12] In 2006 a greatest hits package was released titled The Essentials. [13] In 2007, Fraser and Skreebs formed a band called Fraze Gang and released the album Fraze Gang in 2008. [14] [15] [16] A Brighton Rock EP called Don't Call Us was announced for release in 2009, but it did not materialize. [17]
The band regrouped again Thursday October 30, 2008, at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto for a benefit concert for fellow Canadian rocker Carl Dixon who was injured in a car crash. [18] In 2013, they played the Firefest X Festival in England, [19] and released the single and video for “Creatures of the Night”, a re-imagining of the Kiss classic, for the fundraising album A World With Heroes (A Kiss Tribute For Cancer Care). [20]
Brighton Rock has since played a couple of shows every year. [21] Their last live shows were as part of the 2019 Monsters of Rock Cruise in Jamaica. [22] Also in 2019, Brighton Rock released a new song, "End of Time".
On August 25, 2020, Gerry McGhee died of cancer. [23] In the same year, Fraser had recorded a studio album with a new band, Storm Force.[ citation needed ]

Helix is a Canadian hard rock and heavy metal band. They formed in 1974, and are best known for their 1984 single "Rock You". The original lineup was formed by drummer Bruce Arnold, and consisted of lead vocalist Brian Vollmer, guitarists Ron Watson and Rick "Minstrel" Trembley, keyboardist Don Simmons, and bassist Keith "Bert" Zurbrigg. However, their most well known lineup, and the one that recorded "Rock You", was the 1980s version of the band: Vollmer on vocals, accompanied by guitarists Brent "The Doctor" Doerner and Paul Hackman, bassist Daryl Gray, and drummer Greg "Fritz" Hinz. The history of the band has been marked by many lineup changes, with Vollmer being the sole constant member and only remaining member of the original lineup. Although Hackman was killed in a tour bus accident in 1992, the surviving members of the 1980s lineup reunited in 2009 for an album and have continued to tour since 2011. Watson died in 2019. Simmons died in 2021. Hinz died in 2024.

Kick Axe is a Canadian heavy metal band from Regina, Saskatchewan. Influenced by rambunctious arena rock from the 1970s and early 1980s, the group is perhaps best known for their 1984 album Vices, praised by publications such as AllMusic for its "down-and-dirty guitar riffs" and managing to crack the American market. The band achieved moderate commercial success in the mid-1980s on the strength of the singles "Heavy Metal Shuffle", "On the Road to Rock", "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "Rock the World". Following the release of their 1986 album Rock the World, Kick Axe disbanded and remained on hiatus for many years. In 2004, they re-emerged with the album Kick Axe IV.
Femme Fatale was an American hard rock band. Originally from Albuquerque, the band moved to Los Angeles and released one studio album before disbanding. Lead vocalist, Lorraine Lewis, restarted the band in 2013 with an all-female line-up.

Take a Deep Breath is the second full-length album by Canadian band, Brighton Rock. The album was released in 1988. Take a Deep Breath is Brighton Rock's most commercially successful album, peaking at #22 on the Canadian album chart. The album was also certified Gold by the CRIA. Gerry McGhee announced on April 30, 2013 that Take a Deep Breath will be remastered by Warner Records.
Love Machine is the third full-length album by Canadian band, Brighton Rock. The album was released in 1991. It is the final studio album to feature vocalist Gerry McGhee before his death on August 25, 2020.
Anomaly is the third solo album by former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley, released on September 15, 2009. It is his first album of new studio material since 1989's Trouble Walkin'. Frehley produced most of the album himself, with Marti Frederiksen producing the Sweet cover "Fox on the Run". The album was dedicated to Kiss drummer Eric Carr, Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, and Les Paul. The album debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200, number 20 on the Swedish album chart and number 52 on the German chart.
Junkyard is an American hard rock band formed in 1987 in Los Angeles, with members previously in Minor Threat, Big Boys, Decry and Dag Nasty. The band drew comparisons with Guns N' Roses.
It's A Business Doing Pleasure was the eighth Helix studio album and tenth album altogether. It was their only release on Aquarius Records. It's A Business Doing Pleasure followed the death of lead guitarist Paul Hackman and the departure of temporary guitarist Denny Balicki. In their stead, guitarist Brent "The Doctor" Doerner returned to Helix after a 4-year absence, and Greg Fraser joined on guitar as well.
Spread Eagle is an American hard rock band from New York City, formed in 1989. After only a few months of formation, they were signed by MCA/Universal Records. They have released three albums: Spread Eagle (1990), Open to the Public (1993) and Subway to the Stars (2019).
Nasty Idols were a Swedish glam metal, hard rock band from Malmö, Sweden, which was formed in 1987. After the band split in 1995 they reformed in 2006. Since then the band has released a fifth studio album Boy's town and a sixth album Kalifornia. Band frontman Andy Pierce died in 2013.
Adler was an American rock supergroup from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2011 by former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler. The band was formed following the dissolution of Adler's previous band, Adler's Appetite, and consisted of Adler along with current Lynam and former Mars Electric vocalist/guitarist Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul, and L.A. Guns bassist Johnny Martin.
Devil City Angels is an American rock supergroup formed by guitarist Tracii Guns, drummer Rikki Rockett (Poison), bassist Eric Brittingham (Cinderella), and vocalist and rhythm guitarist Brandon Gibbs.
Slash Puppet were a Canadian hard rock band that debuted in Toronto in 1989. The group originally consisted of lead vocalist Mif, guitarists Lou Garscadden and Frank Bartoletti, bassist Pete Dove and drummer Franklin Wyles. In 1992 Dave Carreiro joined the band taking over as bassist. The band released three records and received awards for Best Toronto Club Band and Best Independent Music Video before disbanding in 1995.
Andrew Lawrence Fortier is an American musician, guitarist, filmmaker, actor, and author. He is best known for his work with The Lucid; which he cofounded alongside Vinnie Dombroski (Sponge), David Ellefson, and Mike Heller. He was guitarist for the now late Chuck Mosley. He has directed and edited the documentary Attack of Life: The Bang Tango Movie as well as the David Ellefson produced horror film Dwellers which Fortier also wrote and stars in. He is the author of Dark, Depressing, and Hilarious which is an autobiography on his career thus far.
Attack of Life: The Bang Tango Movie is a 2015 documentary film about American hard rock band Bang Tango. The film is directed and edited by Drew Fortier, and features interviews with band members, fans, producers, and musical contemporaries such as Howard Benson, Riki Rachtman, Andrew Wilkow, Mandy Lion, Chip Z'nuff, as well as an opening narration by Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider. The film received positive reviews.
Salty Dog was an American rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1986 by former Max Havoc guitarist Scott Lane, bassist Michael Hannon, and drummer Khurt Maier who also played on Max Havoc's 1983 album. Later, they were joined by lead singer Jimmi Bleacher. The band was managed by Vicky Hamilton, who also managed Poison, Faster Pussycat, and Guns N' Roses.
