The county was founded in 1889 and is named for Richard Coke, the 15th governor of Texas. Coke County was one of 46 prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas, but passed a law allowing the sale of beer and wine in 2005.
Runnels County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 10,501. Its county seat is Ballinger. The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1880. It is named for Hiram G. Runnels, a Texas state legislator.

Bronte High School is a public high school located in Bronte, Texas (USA) and classified as a 1A school by the UIL. It is part of the Bronte Independent School District located in northeastern Coke County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.
In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. [1]
The district provided educational services for the inmates at Coke County Juvenile Justice Center, a juvenile detention center operated by the GEO Group and contracted by the Texas Youth Commission. As of 2007, 21 district employees were based at the center. During that year, Alan Richey, the superintendent of Bronte ISD, estimated that 40% of the enrollment in the school district consisted of children who were incarcerated in the center. The superintendent said that the district lost $2 million in funding as a result of the closure of the juvenile facility, which occurred during that year. [2]

It maintains facilities in North America, Australia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. In 2015, the GEO Group's contracts with the U.S. federal government for operating prisons generated about 45% of its revenues. GEO Group facilities include prisons of all three security levels, immigration detention centers, minimum-security detention centers, and mental-health and residential-treatment facilities. It owns numerous facilities and, in other cases, operates state or federal facilities under contract.
The Texas Youth Commission (TYC) was a Texas state agency which operated juvenile corrections facilities in the state. The commission was headquartered in the Brown-Heatly Building in Austin. As of 2007, it was the second largest juvenile corrections agency in the United States, after the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. As of December 1, 2011, the agency was replaced by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
