Bruce Soord is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, known for being the founder and frontman of the progressive rock band the Pineapple Thief. The project, initially named Pineapple Thief, after a dialogue in the movie Eve's Bayou , began as an outlet for Soord's music in 1999. [2] Its debut album, Abducting the Unicorn, was released by Cyclops Records in 1999 and followed in 2002 by 137. After issuing a third album under the moniker, titled Variations on a Dream, Soord formed a band and added "The" to its name, to differentiate its initials PT from Porcupine Tree, another English progressive rock band. [2] As of June 2024, the group have released 16 studio albums, 6 EPs, and several live and compilation albums.

After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal cords coupled with new musical influences led the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music.
