Bryan Young (born July 6, 1974) is an American bassoonist [1] [2] and technology entrepreneur. [3] [4] [5]
Young was born in Washington D.C., and later moved to Baltimore. [6] He is African-American. [7]
As a bassoonist, Young is a founding member of the Poulenc Trio, [6] where he has toured internationally and collaborated with violinist Hilary Hahn, [8] clarinetists David Shifrin, [9] Anthony McGill [10] and Alexander Fiterstein, [11] [12] and oboists Liang Wang [13] [14] [15] and James Austin Smith. [16] [17] He appears on several commercial recordings with the Poulenc Trio, including Poulenc Plays Poulenc, [18] Creation, [19] and Trains of Thought. [20] He is principal bassoonist with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra [6] [2] and performs with the IRIS Orchestra [21] in Memphis, TN. He was a finalist in the Fernand Gillet-Hugo Fox International Bassoon Competition, [22] and has appeared as soloist with prominent American orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra [23] and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. [2] Composers have dedicated works to Bryan Young, including Octavio Vázquez, [24] Steven Gerber, [25] and Thomas Benjamin. Young was selected to premiere To Earth by Roydon Tse, commissioned by the International Double Reed Society to celebrate its 50th anniversary. As an entrepreneur, Young is recognized for his work in health care, [4] software [5] and e-commerce. [3] Young served as a judge advisor for the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)’ Artificial Intelligence (AI) Health Outcomes Challenge. [32] As founder of Intertwine Systems, [5] Young worked with Johns Hopkins researchers to deliver cardiac monitoring software to patients in Trinidad and Tobago, [33] [34] and was named a 'Mobile Entrepreneur to Watch' by the Baltimore Business Journal. [3] Young was a partner and Chief Technical Advisor for SailTime, [35] [36] a global e-commerce platform for boating and leisure maritime activities. Young is the former Director of Connected Healthcare Solutions at Asymmetrik, [4] [37] where he led digital healthcare transformation and innovation initiatives. Concert Artists of Baltimore is a combination chamber orchestra and vocal ensemble in Baltimore, Maryland. The group describes itself as being a 30-year-old institution entirely composed of paid professionals. This puts it on a tier above other non-BSO orchestras in Baltimore, such as the Soulful Symphony, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Baltimore Philharmonia, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Peabody Institute ensembles and various academic orchestras. The unique nature of the group allows it to stage large orchestral/choral works at a level of quality only viable in-house for a few other institutions on the East Coast. It also puts the group in demand for collaborations, including a 2011 performance of Honegger's Joan of Arc which, with more than 600 participants, was so massive as to require three of the groups mentioned above.
