Budd are an Australian rock band originally from Brisbane. They were signed to Fellaheen Records in the 1990s.

Career

Budd formed in 1991 in Brisbane, Australia. [1] Although their lineup changed through the years, founding member and guitarist Jeremy Finlayson has remained in the group throughout and continues to perform as Budd in 2024. [2]

In 1992, they were announced as being signed to Waterfront Records. [3] Instead, they released their first single "Helpmeswell" as the first release on Fellaheen, another label run by Waterfront founder Steven Stavrakis. [4]

Four of their EPs released by Fellaheen Records entered the ARIA Alternative Top 20 charts, [5] [6] [7] [8] but when their label closed down, Budd became viewed as more of a "cult" underground band, with their releases becoming "obscure collectors' items". [9]

When two of the original members left, Budd regrouped with new bassist Ngakau Luke-Harris, and released the "Ovit" EP in 1996 - they were likened to American metal band Helmet, [10] a comparison the band rejected. [11]

Two members of the band (Jeremy and drummer John Morris) also played in Slugfest, a rock band that also included Tim Steward and Kellie Lloyd, members of the band Screamfeeder. [12]

After relocating to Melbourne, Jeremy Finlayson reformed Budd with new lineups and released the albums Prana (on Fellaheen through Shock) in 1998, and the independently-released Jawa in 2009. [9]

In 2015, their 1993 MLP "Yakfat" was re-released as a limited vinyl pressing, [13] [2] - to support this, the Yakfat lineup of Budd regrouped to perform around Brisbane. [14] In 2024, Jeremy Finlayson revived Budd with a new lineup, again based in Melbourne.

Although many of their original releases on Fellaheen only came out on CD, Budd said in 2024 that their aim is to reissue their entire catalogue onto vinyl. [2] They also announced that Budd have new material to release in the future. [2]

From early 1997 the members were Darren Cross on guitar and lead vocals, Presser on drums and Burke Reid on guitar and vocals. Their second album, When Young Terrorists Chase the Sun, reached the ARIA Albums Chart top 50. It provided a top 50 single, "Dust Me Selecta". The group disbanded in 2007.

Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song was released in 1994 by A&M Records as the third single from the band's fourth studio album, Superunknown (1994). Considered to be the band's signature song, it topped the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, where it spent a total of seven weeks at number one. Despite peaking at number two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Black Hole Sun" finished as the number-one track of 1994 for that listing. Worldwide, the single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, France, and Ireland, while in Iceland, it reached number one.

The Go-Betweens were an Australian indie rock band formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1977. The band was co-founded and led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, who were its only constant members throughout its existence. Drummer Lindy Morrison joined the band in 1980, and its lineup would later expand to include bass guitarist Robert Vickers and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown. Vickers was replaced by John Willsteed in 1987, and the quintet lineup remained in place until the band split two years later. Forster and McLennan reformed the band in 2000 with a new lineup that did not include any previous personnel aside from them. McLennan died on 6 May 2006 of a heart attack and the Go-Betweens disbanded again. In 2010, a toll bridge in their native Brisbane was renamed the Go Between Bridge after them.

Boxcar were an Australian electronic dance pop group formed in Brisbane in 1986. Their founding mainstay was David Smith on vocals, guitar and keyboards. Three of their singles appeared on the Billboard dance chart top 20, "Freemason ", "Insect" and "Gas Stop ". They released two albums on Volition Records/Sony Music Australia, Vertigo (1990) and Algorhythm (1994), before disbanding in 1997. They briefly reformed in 2010 and in 2014.

Tumbleweed are an Australian rock group formed in 1990 in Tarrawanna. Three of their studio albums appeared on the ARIA top 50: Tumbleweed (1992), Galactaphonic (1995), and Return to Earth (1996).

The Welcome Mat were a four-piece Australian indie rock group which formed in 1989 and broke up in January 1997. Throughout the early-to-mid-1990s, their songs "Last of the Great Letdowns", "Cake", "Landspeed", "10,000 People", "Hell Hoping", "Play Me" and "Hey! Illusion" topped the Australian alternative charts, with the videos receiving play on Rage and MTV Australia. The first band ever to play Australia's Big Day Out festival, The Welcome Mat had toured extensively around Australia with the likes of the Hoodoo Gurus, Died Pretty, Buffalo Tom, The Lemonheads, The Wonder Stuff, You Am I, Smudge and Bob Dylan.

The fourth album, Transatlanticism, reached number 97 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified gold in the United States. The group also issued nine singles and a demo tape through Barsuk.
