Bulilimamangwe District was a former district in Zimbabwe. In 2003 it was subdivided into three districts: Bulilima District, Mangwe District and Plumtree Town. [1] At the time of its dissolution the area had a population of just under 300,000. [2]

Location

The district was located in Matabeleland South Province, in southwestern Zimbabwe, close to the international border with Botswana. Its main town, Plumtree, is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi), by road, southwest of Bulawayo, the nearest large city. [3]

Overview

Bulilimamangwe is the name which was used long ago before the year 2000. The current districts are Bulilima and Mangwe separated by the railway line which cuts across Plumtree Town. The district headquarters were located in Plumtree, a border town with an estimated population of 2,150 as of 2004. [4]

Plumtree School is a boarding school for boys and girls in the Matabeleland region of Zimbabwe on the border with Botswana. Founded in 1902 by a railway mission, Plumtree School boards 500+ pupils. Recently the school announced it will start enrolling girls as of January 2016.

Figtree is a village in the province of Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. It is located about 37 km south-west of Bulawayo on the main Bulawayo-Plumtree road. The village is named after a wild fig tree which in the 19th century those wishing to enter the Matabele Kingdom had to wait by this tree for permission to proceed. The one and the only tollgate of Bulawayo-Plumtree highway is located in Figtree and after this tollgate towards Plumtree there is Figtree business center, about 100m off the main road to the west. The business center has Figtree Hotel and Conference Centre, Seven Eleven Cocktail Bar, Seven Eleven General Dealer's shop with a Butchery and the S.t Nathaniel Hall. There's also a Post Office at the center, next to the Post Office is the Community Information Center which provides internet and computer services. Also Redwood Ultra City, a leisure centre is located in Figtree and there is a state of the art filling station less than 50m to the leisure centre. About 4 km from Figtree there is a Bazha turn, unpaved road which connects to Matopo-Kezi-Maphisa road. Francistown(Botswana) is a major town located close to Figtree and is 155 km away from Francistown.

Plumtree is a town in Zimbabwe. Marula trees, wild plum trees grow abundantly in the area. The town was once called Getjenge by baKalanga. Another name by which it is often caled, is Titji, meaning station and referring to the railway station which was operating in the area around 1897.

Bulu is a village found in the Mangwe District of Zimbabwe. The village is separated from Ngwizi by the main road coming from Plumtree. The closest hospital to Bulu is Brunaburg and the closest police station is Mphoengs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Callistus Ndlovu</span> Zimbabwean politician (1936–2019)

Callistus Dingiswayo Ndlovu was a Zimbabwean academic, diplomat, and politician. He joined the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) in 1963 as a teacher in Matabeleland, and went on to serve as its representative to the United Nations and North America in the 1970s. After Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, he was a member of the House of Assembly from 1980 to 1985 and served as a senator from 1985 to 1990. He left ZAPU and joined the ruling ZANU–PF party in 1984.
