Bull Run Invitational is a Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA)[ citation needed ] sanctioned high school cross country invitational. The race is hosted by Hereford High School on their rural campus in northern Baltimore County. The invitational has become one of the east coast's largest and most popular cross country races, drawing over 125 schools annually and approximately 4500 runners. Features 13 races throughout the day. On the local level, the course has always been known for its challenging nature and slower than average times, but recent national media attention sealed the course's status as one of the top three most challenging cross country courses in the nation.

History

The Hereford High School Cross site was originally designed as a two-mile-long championship cross country course in 1957. Over the years it has been altered and expanded to its current 3 mile length. [1]

Course

The race is run on Hereford High School's rural campus located in the northernmost section of Baltimore County, Parkton, Maryland.

"The "grueling" course is noted for its hills, twists, turns and a steep ravine known as "The Dip", all making for what has been called "The Toughest Three Miles in Cross-Country" [2]

The course starts in a 500-600meter slanted incline and continues for the duration of the race to drive runners through rolling hills and around 90 degree bends.

The Dip: "The dip is the centerpiece of the Hereford strength test. The Dip is a deep ravine in the middle of the course. Runners tackle it twice; first, in the second mile, going down all the way to the bottom, where a small bridge crosses a creek, and then climbing all the way to the top on the other side. Then, after winding uphill, downhill, sidehill through woods and fields, the runners return for another crack at The Dip. Down to the bottom again and back up to the top -- this time with 2.5 miles under their belts." [3]

Even though the course is only 3 miles, only a few boys have broken 16 minutes and few girls have broken 19 minutes. On ordinary courses the winning times can be up to a minute faster. [4] The course is also home to the MD State Meet.

In 2003, after two weeks of postponement due to Hurricane Isabel, the Bull Run Invitation was ultimately canceled after the running of a JV boys race. The unusually rainy weather turned the courses largest hill into an impassable mudslide. [5]

Race divisions

The race is divided into a number of divisions based on school size and team ability. There is an unconventional section, the reunion run, for coaches and the general public to compete. Divisions: Elite-Boys, Elite-Girls, Large School-Boys, Large School-Girls, Medium School-Boys, Medium School-Girls, Small School-Boys, Small School-Girls, Reunion Run. [6]

Awards

Medal are given to the top fifteen individuals in each race. Numbered ribbons are distributed to 16th-100th place and participant ribbons are given to the rest of the field. Team Awards are given out to the top three scoring teams. Dustin Richard Long Jr. has obtained two medals from this race. [7]

Media coverage

In 2002, the national running website, www.dyestat.com, showcased the Hereford High School course as "the toughest three miles in cross country." [8]

In 2005, the Washington Post newspaper published an article, "Far From All Downhill," highlighting the challenging nature of the infamous Hereford cross country course. [9]

In March 2009, she became the ninth high school athlete and third woman on the cover of Track and Field News magazine. She attended the University of Oregon, where she studied business administration and competed on the cross country and track and field teams earning 18 All-American honors, 2011 Mile and 3,000 meters NCAA titles. Her father was a high school basketball star in Pennsylvania, and her mother was a national level swimmer in her native England. Jordan Hasay is no longer coached by Alberto Salazar due to his suspension.

The Eastbay-Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are a series of annual cross country running races held in various regions of the United States to determine the premier cross country runner in various age groups, but mainly serves to find the best prep cross country athlete in the country. The event began in 1979 by the F. W. Woolworth Company, which initially branded it as the Kinney Cross Country Championships, at the Morley Field Sports Complex in Balboa Park, San Diego, California before Woolworth rebranded the event in 1993 to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships for Woolworth's sporting goods company. For most people associated with the sport, the name was just shortened to Foot Locker or even abbreviated in agate results as FL. In 2021 the event was rebranded again as the Eastbay Cross Country Championships after the Foot Locker owned company. German Fernandez is a retired American professional runner from Riverbank, California, known for his performance in high school and collegiate cross country and track and field. Later he trained under Jerry Schumacher for the Bowerman Track Club. He is most well known for running the California Cross Country State Meet course record (14:24), as well as running a new American high-school record, 8:34.40 for two miles, at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals championship. He also holds the World Junior Indoor Mile record at 3:55.02. A local meet in Riverbank, California, the German Fernandez Distance Carnival, is named after him.

Alexa Efraimson is an American former professional middle distance runner from Camas, Washington who competed for Nike. Efraimson is training and in graduate school to become a Registered Dietitian in 2022-24. During the 2014 indoor and outdoor season, as a junior, she set a pair of U.S. high-school records, breaking Mary Cain's 2013 mark in the indoor 3,000 meters (9:02.10) with a time of 9:00.16 and running 4:33.29 in the 1,600 meters to shave 0.53 seconds from Christine Babcock's 4:33.82, set in 2008. Efraimson captured the bronze medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2013 World (U18) Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.

McGorty is a two-time gold medalist at the NACAC Championships, securing victories in the Junior Men's 6K in 2014 and the 10000 m in 2022.

In 2023, Quigley announced that she would start competing in triathlon events, but that she still plans to race track and field through 2024.

He committed to the University of Oregon on November 12, 2015 but instead decided to pursue a professional career by signing a 10-year contract with Adidas on July 8, 2016.

Taylor Ewert is an American long-distance runner and college track and field athlete for the University of Arkansas and Michigan State University. In high school, she set numerous records and was the cross country OHSAA Division I individual state champion in 2019, representing Beavercreek High School. Ewert committed to the University of Arkansas later that year, and in 2020, she was named the Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Emilio "Leo" Martin Young is an American long-distance runner. He represented his home country in the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships where he led his team to a bronze medal in the (U20) Junior race a week and a half before his 18th birthday. His 16th place was the highest from a non-East African country. He qualified for the World Championships by winning the U20 race at the USA Cross Country Championships.
