Bulldoze is an American beatdown hardcore band formed in Irvington, New Jersey in 1992. Originating from thrash metal band Retribution, Bulldoze's mid-tempo, heavy metal-inspired take on hardcore punk developed the beatdown hardcore genre. They have released a single studio album, The Final Beatdown (1996), along with the Remember Whose Strong (1994) EP and Cleaning Shit Up!! (1993) demo.

History

Bulldoze has its origins in Irvington, New Jersey thrash metal band Retribution which featured bassist and vocalist George Puda, guitarists Zack Thorne and Mike Milewski and drummer Chris Golas. After seeing Mucky Pup and Leeway at the Cricket Club in Irvington, and befriending the members of Biohazard and Life of Agony, Retribution began changing their style towards hardcore. In 1992, Puda decided he wished to quit the band's vocal duties and instead only play bass. In his place, the band recruited Biohazard roadie Kevin "Kevone" Clark on vocals, whom Golas had met during the filming of Biohazard's "Punishment" music video, and changed their name to Bulldoze. The band's first live performance was an impromptu set at Studio One in the middle of NJ Bloodline's set when they were opening for Dog Eat Dog. [1]

Due to the violence of their live performances and Clark frequent criminal activities, Bulldoze were banned from many of the prominent venues in New Jersey's hardcore scene including Studio One, the Cricket Club and the Pipeline. This, along with the growing split within the band, where Puda, Thorne, Golas and Milewski wished to play more melodic and faster music, while Clark wanted to play heavier metal-influenced music led to the band deciding to disband in 1995. [1] Following Bulldoze's disbandment Puda, Thorne, Golas and Milewski formed Train of Thought with bassist Larry Chiswick, [2] and Clark began pursuing his side project Terror Zone full time. Soon after Clark was incarcerated. [1]

On August 14, 2010, they performed at This is Hardcore Festival. [3] On December 18, 2012, they rereleased The Final Beatdown with their demo, EP, two songs from compilation appearances and an hour of live footage. [4] On May 24, 2013, they played in Copenhagen with support from Ruined, Cutdown and No Second Thought. [5] On September 2, 2022, the band announced that Clark had died. [6] [7] Because of this, Puda moved to vocals during the band's subsequent live performances. [8] In January 2022, they played FYA Festival in Tampa, Florida. [9] On May 12, 2023, they performed at the 2023 Black N' Blue Bowl in New York City. [10]

Musical style and legacy

Bulldoze's take on hardcore is slow and influenced by heavy metal and hip hop. They make frequent use of breakdowns, [11] heavy grooves and disses. [12] They have cited influences including Metallica, Judge, Black Sabbath, Carnivore, Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and Van Halen. [1]

Bulldoze pioneered the beatdown hardcore genre, [13] [14] with their 1996 album The Final Beatdown giving the genre its name. [15] NoEcho writer Carlos Ramirez called them "perhaps the biggest influence on the breakdown-heavy hardcore bands that came after them in the mid-'90s and beyond". [16] They have also been cited as an influence by Trapped Under Ice. [8]

Biohazard is an American hardcore band formed in Brooklyn, New York City, in 1987. They are one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and heavy metal with elements of hip hop. The original lineup consisted of bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Anthony Meo. Guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei joined soon after, and drummer Danny Schuler replaced Meo before the recording of their first album, thus solidifying the band's lineup from 1988 to 1995.

The new wave of American heavy metal was a heavy metal music movement that originated in the United States during the early–mid 1990s and expanded most in the early to mid-2000s. Some of the bands considered part of the movement had formed as early as the late 1980s, but did not become influential or reach popular standing until the following decade. The term itself borrows from the new wave of British heavy metal dating to 1979. NWOAHM includes a wide variety of styles, including alternative metal, groove metal, industrial metal, nu metal and metalcore. The term was reportedly coined by Mark Hunter, vocalist of the American metalcore band Chimaira, in 2001.

Cold as Life is an American hardcore band based out of Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1988. Lyrical themes consisted of brutal depictions of the horrors of growing up and living in a city plagued with corruption, murder, drugs, depression and poverty, along with the tragedy of losing friends, family and bandmates to murder and drug abuse. Their shows were frequently violent, involving vicious fights that often included stabbings and beatings with various weapons. However, Cold as Life has a large "family" based following. Stories of these shows would spread throughout the Midwest punk and hardcore communities, contributing to the band's notoriety. Cold as Life drew musical influence from such bands as Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Discharge, 4 Skins, Cro-Mags, Black Sabbath, and Slayer.

Skarhead is an American hardcore punk band from New York City, founded and fronted by Lord Ezec a.k.a. Danny Diablo. The group is considered the originators of thugcore music, a subgenre of hardcore punk "full of relentless breakdowns and throwdown-ready posturing". They have toured with Gwar, Hatebreed, and Earth Crisis. They have been cited as an influence by Deez Nuts and Fucked Up.

Beatdown hardcore is a subgenre of hardcore punk with prominent elements of heavy metal. However, after gaining notoriety for their violent debut live performance, the band continued past their planned time frame. They have since released three EPs, with their debut self-titled album being released on June 14, 2023. A 2023 article by Revolver credited them as "in the upper echelon of bands dominating the hardcore zeitgeist".
