Portuguese music includes many different styles and genres, as a result of its history. These can be broadly divided into classical music, traditional/folk music and popular music and all of them have produced internationally successful acts, with the country seeing a recent expansion in musical styles, especially in popular music.
Green Carnation is a Norwegian progressive metal band from Kristiansand, formed in 1990. Green Carnation's trend of music has continuously changed on every release one by one; from straight forward death metal in their demo, to death-doom, then a progressive doom metal sound, to an atmospheric gothic metal sound, to a melancholic hard rock sound and in 2006, went as far as to releasing an entirely acoustic album Acoustic Verses. The band released its first album in 14 years titled Leaves of Yesteryear on May 8, 2020, which marked a return to their earlier gothic progressive metal roots. A new single was composed, arranged, rehearsed and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, called "The World Without a View", and released digitally on December 18th 2020.
Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Langhus in 1984. They were one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene and their music has strongly influenced the black metal genre. Mayhem's early career was highly controversial, primarily due to their notorious live performances, the 1991 suicide of vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin ("Dead") and the 1993 murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth ("Euronymous") by former member Varg Vikernes of Burzum.
Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt is a Portuguese-American guitarist, singer-songwriter, record producer, and businessperson. He became known as the lead guitarist of the Boston rock band Extreme. He has also recorded a solo album as well as having founded bands including Mourning Widows, Population 1, DramaGods, and The Satellite Party.
Aura Noir is a Norwegian black/thrash metal band from Oslo. Aura Noir is heavily influenced by early thrash bands such as Voivod, Slayer, Sodom and Kreator, to the latter they have also dedicated some of their songs. The band's main lyrical themes focus on blasphemy, death and aggression.
Rune Eriksen is a Norwegian Spellemann award-winning musician and composer. He is best known as the former guitarist in the black metal band Mayhem under the stage name Blasphemer, which he took from a Sodom song. He joined the band in October 1994, but departed in late 2008. He currently plays in Aura Noir, Earth Electric, and the multinational bands Twilight Of The Gods and Vltimas, the latter a supergroup of sorts with vocalist David Vincent, and drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. Ironically, Rune and Flo also played together with Steve Tucker for the artist Nader Sadek and de Rune has also made guest appearances with Absu, Negură Bunget, and Root. His former bands and projects are, besides Nader Sadek, Mezzerschmitt, and the Portuguese gothic doom band Ava Inferi. He resides in Portugal.
Mezzerschmitt is a Norwegian black metal band, a spinoff of Mayhem. It was formed in 2000 by Mayhem members Jan Axel Blomberg (Hellhammer) and Rune Eriksen (Blasphemer), collaborating with Lars Sørensen from Red Harvest. They intended to create an industrial metal band, but their sound soon shifted towards black metal while still incorporating industrial elements. Mezzerschmitt have released only one EP so far, Weltherrschaft.
Ava Inferi was a musical group formed in Almada, Portugal, by Norwegian guitarist and songwriter Rune Eriksen. Their debut album, Burdens, was released in January 2006.
Root is a Czech black metal band.
Enthroned is a Belgian black metal band formed in Charleroi. It is one of the premier acts of the Belgian black metal scene.
The Silhouette is the second studio album by gothic/doom metal band, Ava Inferi. It was released on Season of Mist, on 15 October 2007.
Blood of Bacchus is the third studio album by gothic/doom metal band, Ava Inferi. It was released on Season of Mist, on 25 May 2009.
Pulsação is the first compilation album by the Portuguese pop singer Susana Félix. It was released on November 19, 2007. It includes "Mais Olhos " and "Um Lugar Enacantado", the two first singles from Felix's debut album Um Pouco mais. The rest of the songs are taken from the other two albums, Rosa e Vermelho and Índigo.
Índigo is the third studio album by the Portuguese pop singer Susana Félix. It was recorded in 2006 and released in that same year. The lead single of the album was "Flutuo", followed by "Concilios", "Lua Na Ponte", "Sou Eu" and "Fintar a Pulsação".
Abzu is the sixth and final studio album by American black metal band Absu. It was released in 2011 on Candlelight Records. It features new members in the form of guitarist Vis Crom and bassist/vocalist Ezezu; although Ezezu did join the band after the recording of Absu, this is his first studio recording with Absu.
Onyx is the fourth studio album of gothic/doom metal band, Ava Inferi. It was released on Season of Mist in 2011.
Carmen Susana Simões is a Portuguese singer and lyricist of darkwave and gothic music, characterized by a melancholic mezzo-soprano voice.
Heritage of Satan is the ninth studio album by the Czech black/heavy metal band Root, released on 25 October 2011 by Agonia Records. It was the band's first album to be released by Agonia and their last with the guitarist Marek "Ashok" Šmerda, who left the band three years later to join Cradle of Filth. The album uses many guest musicians, such as Erik Danielsson from Watain, Nergal from Behemoth and Blasphemer from Mayhem, Aura Noir and Ava Inferi.
1755 is the eleventh full-length album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell, released on 3 November 2017. Unlike previous albums, it is entirely sung in Portuguese. It is a concept album, detailing the story of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
