Buyisiwe Maureen Nzimande (born 31 October 1952) is a South African politician and diplomat who was the Deputy Minister of Public Works from 1999 to 2001 under President Thabo Mbeki. She represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly from May 1994 until March 2001,when she resigned to join the diplomatic service.
Nzimande was born on 31 October 1952 [1] in Vryheid in the former Natal province. [2] She completed a teaching diploma at the University of Zululand in 1978 and later,in 1989,a Bachelor of Arts at the same university. She was a teacher and school principal by profession and served as executive secretary of the Natal African Teachers' Union from 1987 to 1992. [2]
She was also a member of Inkatha (later the IFP) and in her youth had been active in the Inkatha Youth Brigade in Umlazi. [2] Inkatha leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi later said that Nzimande was "like a daughter to me";they were cousins,with their paternal grandmothers both members of the Mtshali family. [3]
In South Africa's first post-apartheid elections in 1994,Nzimande was elected to represent the IFP in the National Assembly,the lower house of the new South African Parliament. [4] During her first term,she served as the whip of the IFP's caucus from 1995 to 1997. [2] She was re-elected in 1999,representing the KwaZulu-Natal constituency. [1]
After the 1999 election,newly elected President Thabo Mbeki appointed her as Deputy Minister of Public Works,in which capacity she deputised Minister Stella Sigcau. [2] She served in that office until January 2001,when Mbeki announced that Musa Zondi would replace her in a reshuffle;it was reported that she would become ambassador-designate to Thailand. [5] [6] She resigned from her parliamentary seat on 31 March 2001 [7] and was indeed appointed as an ambassador. [3]
She was married to Themba Nzimande,an intellectual,who died in 2019. [3]
The Inkatha Freedom Party is a right-wing political party in South Africa. Although registered as a national party,it has had only minor electoral success outside its home province of KwaZulu-Natal. Mangosuthu Buthelezi,who served as chief minister of KwaZulu during the Apartheid period,founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. He was succeeded as party president in 2019 by Velenkosini Hlabisa.
Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi was a South African politician and Zulu prince who served as the traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family from 1954 until his death in 2023. He was appointed to this post by King Bhekuzulu,the son of King Solomon kaDinuzulu,a brother to Buthelezi's mother Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu. Buthelezi was chief minister of the KwaZulu bantustan during apartheid and founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975,leading it until 2019,and became its president emeritus soon after that. He was a political leader during Nelson Mandela's incarceration (1964–1990) and continued to be so in the post-apartheid era,when he was appointed by Mandela as Minister of Home Affairs,serving from 1994 to 2004.
Frank Themba Mdlalose was the first Premier of the newly renamed KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa,after the African National Congress (ANC) won the country's first all-inclusive general election on 27 April 1994,while the Inkatha Freedom Party won a majority in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature.
Brigitte Sylvia Mabandla is a South African politician,lawyer and former anti-apartheid activist who served in the cabinet of South Africa from 2003 to 2009,including as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development from 2004 to 2008. She became the South African Ambassador to Sweden in January 2020. A veteran of the African National Congress (ANC),she was an elected member of party's National Executive Committee between 1997 and 2012.
Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi was a South African politician who was the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of South Africa in the cabinet of Jacob Zuma. Prior to being elected to Parliament,she served for nineteen years as a councillor,fifteen of those years as Mayor of the Zululand District Municipality. Lionel Percival Hercules Mbeki Mtshali was a South African politician who was Premier of KwaZulu-Natal from 1999 to 2004. He was known for unilaterally ordering the expansion of the province's antiretrovirals programme during the HIV/AIDS epidemic,in defiance of the policy of the national government under President Thabo Mbeki. A founding member and former chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party,Mtshali was also national Minister of Arts,Culture,Science and Technology in the government of President Nelson Mandela from 1996 to 1999.
Keith Muntuwenkosi "Musa" Zondi is a South African politician who served as Deputy Minister of Public Works from 2001 to 2004. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 1999 and in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2012. He served as the party's secretary-general and was widely touted as a possible successor to IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi before he resigned from his party office and legislative seat in February 2012.
Inkosi Mhlabunzima Wellington Hlengwa was a South African politician and Zulu traditional leader who served as Deputy Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature until his death in March 2005. Before assuming that office in 2004,Hlengwa represented his political party,the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP),in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004. He was also the chief of KwaThoyana Tribal Authority near Umbumbulu in eThekwini,KwaZulu-Natal,a position to which he was appointed in 1988.
Moleeane Ben Skosana was a South African politician who served as Minister of Correctional Services from 1998 to 2004. He was a founding member of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and represented the party in the National Assembly from 1994 until his death in 2014. He also served as House Chairperson of the National Assembly from 2009.
Faith Xolile Gasa is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education and Culture from August 2000 to June 2001. She represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1995 and in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1995 until her death in 2005.
