C. Ellis Black (born July 28,1942) is an American politician. He was a member of the Georgia State Senate from the 8th District,serving from 2015 to 2021. He is a member of the Republican party. [1] Black also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2001 to 2015.
Batumi is the second-largest city of Georgia and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara,located on the coast of the Black Sea in Georgia's southwest,20 kilometers north of the border with Turkey. Other major metropolitan areas in the state include Augusta,Savannah,Columbus,and Macon. Georgia has 100 miles (160 km) of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.
Fayette County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census,the population was 119,194,an increase from 106,567 in 2010. Fayette County was established in 1821. The county seat,Fayetteville,was established in 1823. Much of Fayette County is bordered on the east side by the Flint River.
Athens is a consolidated city-county and college town in the U.S. state of Georgia. Downtown Athens lies about 70 miles (110 km) northeast of downtown Atlanta. The University of Georgia,the state's flagship public university and an R1 research institution,is in Athens and contributed to its initial growth. In 1991,after a vote the preceding year,the original City of Athens abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County,referred to jointly as Athens–Clarke County where it is the county seat.

Sanford Dixon Bishop Jr. is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Georgia's 2nd congressional district,serving since 1993. He became the dean of Georgia's congressional delegation after the death of John Lewis. A member of the Blue Dog Coalition,he belongs to the conservative faction of the Democratic Party. His district is in southwestern Georgia and includes Albany,Thomasville,and most of Columbus and Macon.
Horace Julian Bond was an American social activist,leader of the civil rights movement,politician,professor,and writer. While he was a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta,Georgia,during the early 1960s,he helped establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1971,he co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery,Alabama,and served as its first president for nearly a decade.
Alveda Celeste King is an American activist,author,and former state representative for the 28th District in the Georgia House of Representatives.
The Georgia Bulldogs football program represents the University of Georgia in the sport of American football. The Bulldogs compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They play their home games at historic Sanford Stadium on the university's Athens,Georgia,campus. Georgia claims four consensus national championships;while the AP and Coaches Polls have each voted the Bulldogs the national champion three times. Georgia has also been named the National Champion by at least one polling authority in four other seasons.
Donald Lee Hollowell was an American civil rights attorney during the Civil Rights Movement,in the state of Georgia. He successfully sued to integrate Atlanta's public schools,Georgia colleges,universities and public transit,freed Martin Luther King Jr. from prison,and mentored civil rights attorneys. The first black regional director of a federal agency,Hollowell is best remembered for his instrumental role in winning the desegregation of the University of Georgia in 1961. He is the subject of a 2010 documentary film,Donald L. Hollowell:Foot Soldier for Equal Justice.
The Georgia Republican Party is the affiliate of the Republican Party in the U.S. state of Georgia and one of the two major political parties and the current favored party in the state and is currently chaired by Joshua McKoon.
The Albany Movement was a desegregation and voters' rights coalition formed in Albany,Georgia,in November 1961. This movement was founded by local black leaders and ministers,as well as members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The groups were assisted by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). It was meant to draw attention to the brutally enforced racial segregation practices in Southwest Georgia. However,many leaders in SNCC were fundamentally opposed to King and the SCLC's involvement. They felt that a more democratic approach aimed at long-term solutions was preferable for the area other than King's tendency towards short-term,authoritatively-run organizing.
Cordy Tindell Vivian was an American minister,author,and close friend and lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement. Vivian resided in Atlanta,Georgia,and founded the C. T. Vivian Leadership Institute,Inc. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Calvin Smyre is an American politician who served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. Elected in 1974,he was the longest-serving member of the Georgia Legislature. In May 2022,his nomination to serve as the United States ambassador to the Dominican Republic was withdrawn and he was instead nominated to serve as the United States ambassador to the Bahamas.
On May 16,1918,a plantation owner was murdered,prompting a manhunt which resulted in a series of lynchings in May 1918 in southern Georgia,United States. White people killed at least 13 black people during the next two weeks. Among those killed were Hazel "Hayes" Turner and his wife,Mary Turner. Hayes was killed on May 18,and the next day,his pregnant wife Mary was strung up by her feet,doused with gasoline and oil then set on fire. Mary's unborn child was cut from her abdomen and stomped to death. Her body was then repeatedly shot. No one was ever convicted of her lynching.
Akinyele Umoja is an American educator and author who specializes in African-American studies. As an activist,he is a founding member of the New Afrikan People's Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. In April 2013,New York University Press published Umoja's book We Will Shoot Back:Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement. Currently,he is a Professor and Department Chair of the Department of African-American Studies at Georgia State University (GSU).
Charles Melvin Sherrod was an American minister and civil rights activist. During the civil rights movement,Sherrod helped found the Albany Movement while serving as field secretary for southwest Georgia for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He also participated in the Selma Voting Rights Movement and in many other campaigns of the civil rights movement of that era.

David Eugene Lucas Sr. is an American politician. He is a member of the Georgia State Senate from the 26th District,serving since 2012. He is a member of the Democratic party. Prior to being a Senator,he served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1974 to 2011. Lucas is also a founding member of 100 Black Men of America. Contrary to earlier assumptions,he is not the father of comedian David Lucas. David Lucas Sr. Did not die in November 2023 as previously noted. As of February 2024,he is still living.
