C.S. Gangadharan (7 October 1927 - 8 April 2007) [1] was an Indian freedom fighter, a Keralan member of the legislative assembly (MLA) and state president of the Kerala Freedom Fighters Association. He was a prominent leader of the Kerala Socialist Party (KSP).

Early days

During his university days, Gangadharan participated in the Indian independence movement. He was an activist of the Praja Mandalam and also of the erstwhile Vidyarthi Congress. He was a leader of the student movement. On one occasion, Gangadharan was not given permission to appear for intermediate examinations because he wore khadi, viewed as an anti-British statement. [2]

Political activity

He participated in the Quit India movement. After leaving college in 1947 Gangadharan formed the Kerala Socialist Party (KSP) under the leadership of Mathai Manjooran, whom he considered as his mentor and guide. Gangadharan led an agitation to Viyyur jail, when Manjooran was held. Assaulted by police and jailed himself, he was released from prison a day before India became independent.

C.S Gangadharan, known as CS to his friends, [3] was a staunch activist for the KSP in the post-independence era. He served as secretary of the KSP as well as the publisher of Socialist, its weekly organ. He contested elections in 1970 with the support of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly representing the Irinjalakuda constituency. [4]

Personal life

In 1952, he married Vijayalakshmi, granddaughter of Chief Secretary of Cochin State Komattil Achutha Menon. Considering the caste-communal divide prevalent in society in those days, Gangadharan saw their inter-caste marriage as a revolutionary move. They have two sons and four daughters. [2] [5]

His work 'Jathivyavasthayum Kerala Charitravum is a work in social history. Kerala Sahitya Akademi awarded him their annual award for novel in 1974. He was also a recipient of the Vayalar Award and other honours.

Left Democratic Front (Kerala) Indian political party

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is an alliance of centre-left to left-wing political parties in the state of Kerala, India. It is one of the two major political alliances in Kerala, the other being Congress-led UDF, each of which has been in power alternately for the last four decades. LDF won the May 2016 election and is currently in power. The alliance consists of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Kerala Congress (M), Nationalist Congress Party, Janata Dal (Secular), Indian National League, and various smaller parties.

K. Kelappan Indian politician, reformer, and freedom fighter

Koyapalli Kelappan was an Indian politician, independence activist, educationist and journalist. During the Indian independence movement, he was the lead figure of Indian National Congress in Kerala and was popularly known as Kerala Gandhi. After Indian independence, he held various seats in Gandhian organizations. He is the founding member and president of the Nair Service Society.

P. K. Vasudevan Nair

Padayatt Kesavapillai Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as PKV, was the 9th Chief Minister of Kerala and a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was elected to the Lok Sabha four times, in 1957, 1962, 1967 and 2004, and to the Kerala Legislative Assembly twice, in 1977 and 1980. He became Chief Minister on 20 October 1978, following A. K. Antony's resignation as Chief Minister. However he resigned 7 October 1979 owing to differences with other parties in the United Front.

Mannathu Padmanabha Pillai Indian social reformer and freedom fighter

Mannathu Padmanabhan was an Indian social reformer and freedom fighter from the south-western state of Kerala. He is recognised as the founder of the Nair Service Society (NSS), which claims to represent the Nair community that constitutes 12.10% of the population of the state. Padmanabhan is considered as a visionary reformer who organised the Nair community under the NSS.

Mathai Manjooran was an Indian independence activist from Kerala, socialist revolutionary, founder of the Kerala Socialist Party, Member of Parliament, Minister of Labour (economics) in the second E.M.S. Namboodiripad communist ministry, and above all a proponent for the formation of the Kerala State.

Kerala Socialist Party (KSP) was a political party in India founded under the leadership of Mathai Manjooran on 21 September 1947 at Kozhikode. It began as a small party, but its front-line leaders compelled the party deep into the public imagination. The party was part of the coalition that formed the first democratically elected communist government in the world after San Marino.

R. Sankara Narayana Thampi was a freedom fighter, Indian National Congress then became a member of Communist Party of India activist and served as the First Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from April, 1957 to July, 1959.

Mullakkara Retnakaran Indian politician (born 1954)

Mullakkara Retnakaran is an Indian politician from Kollam, Kerala and former and the Minister for Agriculture in Kerala. He is the State Executive Member of Communist Party of India CPI, Kerala since 2005. K. E. Mammen was an Indian freedom fighter. He was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and K. Kelappan is often referred to as the Kerala Gandhi.

V. Subbiah

Varadarajulu Kailasa Subbiah was an Indian communist politician from Pondicherry. Subbiah was the secretary of the Communist Party of French India. He is regarded as the founder of the trade union movement in the union territory. Subbiah was one of the 'Tamrapatra awardees', awarded the decoration for their role in the Indian freedom struggle.

Rajaji Mathew Thomas Indian politician

Rajaji Mathew Thomas is a journalist and a Communist Party of India politician from Thrissur and was the MLA of Ollur from 2006 to 2011. Rajaji Mathew Thomas was the leader of All India Youth Federation and selected as national general secretary.He became the vice President of World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), based at Budapest from 1985 to 1996.

Gopaldas Ambaidas Desai (1887–1951) also called Darbar Gopaldas Desai was a prince who ascended the throne of the State of Dhasa in Saurashtra and a noted Gandhian political and social activist. He is remembered as the first prince in India who gave up his principality to become a freedom fighter against the British Raj.

Chandradeo Prasad Verma

Chandradeo Prasad Verma was a politician who was elected to the Lok Sabha's lower house of the Parliament of India from the Arrah, Bihar in 1977, 1980 and 1996. He was the Union Minister of State for Rural Areas and Employment. He was earlier Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and a Cabinet minister in Bihar.
