CCTV-16 is a Chinese free-to-air television channel, owned by China Central Television. The channel is a localised version of the Olympic Channel, [1] broadcasting primarily in 4K UHD format, with a downscaled feed for HDTV. [2]

History and programming

In January 2019, Voice of China announced plans to launch a Chinese version of the Olympic Channel. [3] The channel later launched on 25 October 2021, prior to the 2022 Winter Olympics. Like its numerous localisations, the Chinese version of the Olympic Channel airs both live and classic sports events, along with original programming.

CCTV-1 is the primary channel of CCTV, the national flagship terrestrial television network of the People's Republic of China. It broadcasts a range of programs from CCTV Headquarters at East 3rd Ring Road in Beijing and is available to both cable and terrestrial television viewers. The terrestrial signal of CCTV-1 is free-to-air across China. However, due to copyright restrictions, the satellite signal of CCTV-1 is encrypted, and smartcards are necessary for decryption.

Bing Dwen Dwen is the official mascot of the 2022 Winter Olympics, and Shuey Rhon Rhon is the official mascot of the 2022 Winter Paralympics. The name of Bing Dwen Dwen possibly means ice hulu, as 墩 (Dūn) in its name is a homophone of 礅 (Dūn) in the word 糖礅 in Tianjin dialect, meaning tanghulu, the prototype of the mascot. Both events were held in Beijing, the capital of China.
