The CNR diesel multiple unit is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) designed for suburban passenger service in the south and west of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. The trains were acquired by the Argentine government in 2013 at a cost of $89 million, and are used on the Belgrano Sur line, which formerly used locomotive-hauled stock. [1]
The contract established the manufacture of 27 formations consisting of two control cars and one intermediate trailer car. The purchase of the formations facilitated the extension of services on branch G to Marcos Paz, a section which not see rail service since 1993. [2]
When the state-owned Trenes Argentinos took over the Belgrano Sur line from Argentren on 2 March 2015, [3] Minister of the Interior and Transport Florencio Randazzo decided to purchase 81 cars (formed into 27 3-car sets) from the Chinese company CNR Corporation, as part of the Government's plan to modernise the line. [1]
The first batch of new rolling stock was expected to be arrive from May 2015, [4] [5] but only arrived in Buenos Aires on 7 July of that year. [6] It was then announced that the new rolling stock would begin running on the Buenos Aires to González Catán route in August. [7] [8] The other parts of the line received the new rolling stock before the end of 2015, as more railcars arrived in the country. [9]
As the railcars were being delivered, all 28 stations were to be refurbished and modernised, which included raising the platform height to match the new rolling stock. [6] [10]
In early October 2019, set CM 1015 was trialed on the section from González Catán and 20 de Junio, which had overseen rehabilitation since its abandonment in 1993. [11] Services to 20 de Junio was supposed to commence on 14 November 2019, but was delayed after inspections found numerous flaws with the line, including signaling issues and lack of staff training. [12] Although the 20 de Junio service eventually started on 2 December 2019, [13] the single CNR DMU that initially ran the section was displaced by two Emepa Alerce railcars in January 2020, due to low demand. [14]
The CNR DMUs suffered from a shortage of spare parts, causing service reduction on the Belgrano Sur line in July 2023 (although officially, the service reduction was due to infrastructural maintenance, rather than delayed rolling stock repairs and parts delivery some sources noted), [15] and again in August, which also delayed service commencement on the Marinos del Crucero Gral branch by a week until the 14th. [16]
To address the issue, in September 2023, Trenes Argentinos handed out tenders in purchasing spare parts from both domestic and international contracts. [17] Trenes Argantinos and the Ministry of Transport had previously signed a contract in 2020 with CRRC Tangshan to supply parts for the CNR DMUs, as well as the 20 CNR CKD8 diesel locomotives that hauled Argentina's long-distance trains, but has not been fulfilled in time. [17] [18] The contract failed in March 2024, [19] causing further reduction of services during April, with the González Catán branch seeing the daily number of trains dwindled from 110 to 88, and off-peak frequency doubled to 40 minutes per train. [20]
Trenes Argentinos made another attempt in gathering spare parts for the CNR DMUs, by signing a new contract in July 2024, [19] followed by the purchase of 802 wheels in January 2025 for its fleet operating on the Roca, San Martin, and Belgrano Sur lines. [21]

The Belgrano Norte line is a commuter rail service in Buenos Aires, Argentina run by the private company Ferrovías since 1 April 1994. This service had previously been run by the state-owned General Belgrano Railway since nationalisation of the railways in 1948. Ferrovías also formed part of the consortium Unidad de Gestión Operativa Ferroviaria de Emergencia (UGOFE) which operated other commuter rail services in Buenos Aires.

The Belgrano Sur line is an Argentine 1,000 mmmetre gauge commuter rail service in the Greater Buenos Aires area, currently operated by state-owned enterprise Trenes Argentinos. The Belgrano Sur runs over tracks and through stations built by the Franco–Belgian-owned Compañía General de Buenos Aires and British Midland companies at the beginning of the 20th century.
Railway privatisation in Argentina was a process which began in 1989 under the presidency of Carlos Menem, following a series of neoliberal economic reforms. It had formerly owned Ferrocentral, which ran services from Buenos Aires to Córdoba and San Miguel de Tucumán on the Mitre Network, however the state-owned company SOFSE took over these services in 2014 and the subsidiary now remains inactive.

The CMM 400-2 is a diesel multiple unit produced by Materfer in Córdoba Province, Argentina. The units are produced in Argentina's three primary track gauges and the standard gauge variants were the first to be produced for General Urquiza Railway services in Entre Ríos Province.
The CSR EMU is a series of electric multiple unit cars manufactured by CSR Corporation Limited for use on Buenos Aires' commuter rail network. As of 2015, the trains operated on three of the city's lines and 705 cars were manufactured, with each line using a different number of cars per train. They were created for use on lines electrified using both third rail and overhead lines.
The Alerce is an Argentine railcar produced by the Emepa Group in Chascomús, Buenos Aires Province. As of 2015, the units are produced for the General Belgrano Railway's narrow gauge network and are currently used on commuter rail services, though a broad gauge variant is currently in the works. They are designed to be easily converted into Electric Multiple Units, though only diesel variants have been produced to date. The Alerce's namesake is the common name of Fitzroya cupressoides, a coniferous tree native to Argentina and Chile.
The Buenos Aires Underground has one of the most diverse metro fleets in the world, and has had some of the oldest models in operation on any network. The network began with a relatively standardised fleet, but throughout its over 100-year-long history, it has seen numerous purchases which have created cases where some lines operate numerous models. Recently there have been increased efforts to modernise and standardise the fleets, with large purchases from China CNR Corporation and Alstom.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca Solar Train is a 42 km (26.1 mi) regional tourist service that operates between the cities of Volcán and Tilcara in Jujuy Province, Argentina. The train service operates within the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003 and uses the General Belgrano Railway's Ramal C that extends from Santa Fe and La Quiaca.
