The Canadian Half Marathon Championships is the annual national championships for the half marathon in Canada sanctioned by Athletics Canada.

Contents

The event is currently hosted by the Manitoba Marathon weekend, which is awarded hosting duties from 2019 through 2024. [1] It was previously hosted by the Calgary Marathon weekend [2] and the Banque Scotia 21K de Montréal. [3]

The 2018 championships hosted by the Calgary Half Marathon was won by Calgarian Trevor Hofbauer. [4]

The World Athletics Half Marathon Championships is a biennial international half marathon competition organised by World Athletics. The competition was launched as the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in 1992 and held annually until 2010. It was renamed the IAAF World Road Running Championships in 2006 and reduced in distance to a 20K run, but reverted to the half marathon distance the following year and to the original competition name the year after that. The competition was renamed to its current title in 2020 after the governing body rebranded itself moving away from the long-standing International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) moniker.

The 10K run is a long-distance road running competition over a distance of ten kilometres. It is usually distinguished from the 10,000 metres track running event by stating the distance in kilometres, rather than metres.

The Manitoba Marathon weekend consists of a marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 10 km race, and 2.6 mile fun run. The marathon was first run in the City of Winnipeg in 1979 and has generally been held annually on Father's Day since then. In 2019, about 10,000 runners in total participated over the weekend, including 655 who finished the marathon.

Cameron Levins is a Canadian long-distance runner. He won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He is the North American record holder for the marathon and the Canadian record holder for the half marathon.

Anne-Marie Comeau is a Canadian cross-country skier. She competed in the women's 15 kilometre skiathlon at the 2018 Winter Olympics where she finished 48th. She competed for Canada at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, Finland. She is also a cross-country & Marathon runner.

The 20K run is a long distance foot race. It is a rarely held race that is not recognized as an Olympic event. The event held IAAF world championship status in 2006 only, when the existing IAAF World Half Marathon Championships briefly hosted the shorter distance.

The 25K run is a long distance running footrace that is between the distance of a half marathon and a marathon. It was formerly an official world record distance in road running by World Athletics, but has since been downgraded to world best status. Separately, the Association of Road Racing Statisticians retains world records in the 25K distance. The ARRS holds different standards for records than World Athletics, with exclusions for certain point-to-point races and mixed sex races. As a result its women's world record is 1:26:34 by Nancy Conz, set in 1982.

Philemon Rono, nicknamed the "baby police", is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon. He holds the Canadian all-comers' record in the marathon, having run the fastest marathon ever in Canada of 2:05:00 to win the 2019 Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Rono is a three-time winner of this marathon, having won the race in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
