Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) Forward Operating Location (FOL) Yellowknife was upgraded as part of the North American Air Defence Modernization (NAADM) program authorized at the Shamrock Summit held in Quebec City on March 18, 1985. The NAADM program was authorized by the Canada-United States Memorandum of Understanding signed by Prime Minister Mulroney and Ronald Reagan at the summit. The purpose of the upgraded facilities at Yellowknife Airport was to accommodate up to six fighters in hangars when needed,^[1]^[2] 200 support personnel, and storage facilities. The facility was built and accepted by DND in 1994, without munitions storage facilities.^[3]

The Shamrock Summit was the colloquial name given to the 18 March 1985 meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and US President Ronald Reagan in Quebec City. It gained this nickname because of the Irish background of the two leaders and because the meeting was held the day after St. Patrick's Day. The summit was capped by a televised event where Mulroney, Reagan and their wives sang When Irish Eyes are Smiling, which publicly exemplified the camaraderie between the two leaders.

FOL Yellowknife is located immediately southwest of the Yellowknife Airport (YZF), and uses its runways when required.

Yellowknife Airport is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The airport is part of the National Airports System, and is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories. The airport has regular scheduled passenger service and a number of freight services. In 2007, the terminal handled 527,000 passengers.

Flesland Air Station is a military air base situated at Flesland in Bergen, Norway. Part of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF), it shares a 2,990-meter (9,810 ft) runway with Bergen Airport, Flesland. The air station has since 1999 had a mobilization status and is only manned with six employees. Its main structure is an subterranean hangar with space for 25 fighter jets.
