Caning is a legal punishment in some parts of Indonesia. [1] [2] Although there is no nationwide law on the matter, it is often used as a punishment for a wide range of crimes, including homosexuality, in the Sharia-ruled Aceh autonomous province. [3] [4]

Crimes punishable with caning in Indonesia include adultery, gambling, alcohol consumption, homosexuality, rape, and any display of sexual affection or intimacy outside of marriage. [5] [3]
