Carboline, a subsidiary of RPM International, is a global manufacturer of high-performance coatings, linings, and fireproofing products headquartered in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Founded in 1947, Carboline's products have been used in some of the world's harshest environments and industrial sectors, including oil and gas, water and wastewater, marine, rail, and more.
Carboline founder Stanley Lopata graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1935 with a degree in chemistry. [1] While selling corrosion-resistant equipment to the chemical industry as a manufacturer's representative, Lopata noticed damage in one of his customers' glass-lined tanks. In response, Lopata developed his own carbon-based liquid repair product for the tanks. [2] Out of this carbon-based lining came "Carboline."
Carboline was acquired by RPM International Inc. in 1985. [3] It operates within RPM's Performance Coatings Group.
In 1981, Carboline's acquisition of the Plasite line allowed the company to break into the railroad car and transportation markets. [4]
In 2005, Carboline acquired AD Fire Protection Systems, a Toronto-based manufacturer of intumescent fireproofing products. [5] The next year, they acquired St. Louis-based NuChem, expanding their passive fire protection portolio across both the commercial and industrial markets. [6]
In 2007, Carboline acquired the marine and industrial assets of Finnaren & Haley, strengthening its position in the marine market. [7]
In 2016, RPM acquired Specialty Polymer Coatings, Inc. (SPC), a Canadian manufacturer of high-performance coatings for the oil and gas pipeline market. The company runs as a separate division, reporting through Carboline. [8]
In 2018, the company announced the acquisition of Strathmore and American Coatings, with Strathmore becoming a standalone product line in its portfolio. [9]
In 2021, Carboline announced the acquisition of the Dudick Inc. business, strengthening its position in the secondary containment and flooring markets. [10]
