El Faro de Carbonera, registered officially as Torre Carbonera, or Torre de Punta Mala [1] , is an active lighthouse located on Punta Mala, in the coastal town of La Alcaidesa, Spain, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The lighthouse is situated in the municipality of San Roque and lies north of the Playa de La Alcaidesa.
Although not open to the public for visits, the lighthouse can be accessed via several dirt tracks leading down from the beach. There is a small ruin of the Casa de Carbonera (charcoal-maker's house) next to the lighthouse.
The original lighthouse was built in 1588 and later restored in the 18th-century and 1989. Originally an 16th-century battlement tower, it was envisioned to be converted into a lighthouse in the 1984 Lighting Plan [2] and began working as a lighthouse in 1990. [3]
