Carla Borrego (born 11 November 1983), also known as Carla Williams and Carla Williams-Borrego, is a former Jamaica netball international. She was a member of the Jamaica team that won the bronze medal at the 2003 World Netball Championships. She subsequently switched to women's basketball, playing for Broward Seahawks and Miami Hurricanes. In 2009, after returning to netball, Borrego began playing for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the ANZ Championship. She was a prominent member of the Thunderbirds teams that won the 2010 and 2013 titles. She has also played for Sirens in the Netball Superleague and for Garville in the Netball South Australia Premier League.

Early life, education and basketball

Borrego is originally from Green Island in Hanover, Jamaica. She attended Green Island High School and Queen's School. Leaving Jamaica in 2003, Carla moved to Florida where she initially attended Broward College. [1] She then gained a basketball scholarship to the University of Miami, where she completed a Criminology and Liberal Arts degree. [1] While attending college and university, Borrego also played women's basketball for Broward Seahawks in FCSAA competitions and the NJCAA Women's Basketball Championship and for Miami Hurricanes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Netball

Early years

Borrego, then Carla Williams, was discovered playing netball in regional competitions by the husband of Jamaica international, Elaine Davis. She originally played as a goal keeper, but became a goal shooter when a team she played for had too many defenders. Davis and her husband encouraged Williams to play in a Kingston-based league. She subsequently played for Waulgrovians. [4] [5]

Adelaide Thunderbirds

In 2009, after completing her degree at the University of Miami, Borrego signed for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the ANZ Championship. [6] She was a prominent member of the Thunderbirds team that won the 2010 ANZ Championship; in the grand final against Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, Borrego scored 40 out of 46, including 11 out of 13 in the fourth quarter as Thunderbirds won 52–42. [7] In 2013, Borrego won a second ANZ Championship with Thunderbirds. [8] Borrego continued to play for Thunderbirds until she announced her retirement at the end of the 2016 season, finishing her ANZ Championship career with 2,870 goals. [9]

Sirens

During the 2017 Netball Superleague season, Borrego played for Sirens, in that team's inaugural Superleague season. [10]

Garville

In 2017 Borrego began playing for Garville in the Netball South Australia Premier League. [11] In 2018 she played for Garville in the league's grand final, helping the club finish as runners up. [12] She was also named as the league's 2018 MVP and was included in the league's Team of the Year. [13] [14]

International

Jamaica

Borrego was a member of the Jamaica team that won the bronze medal at the 2003 World Netball Championships. [15] She finished the tournament as the second highest scorer after New Zealand's Irene van Dyk. [16] Jamaica tried to call Borrego up for the 2007 World Netball Championships but the University of Miami refused to release her from her scholarship commitments. [4] [16] In January 2010, following her return to netball, it was reported that Borrego was going to make a comeback for Jamaica. [4] [17] However in November 2010 she announced that she was no longer available. [18] In September 2022 Borrego, along with Romelda Aiken-George and coach Connie Francis, was added to the Jamaica team for the 2022 Taini Jamison Trophy Series due to several other players being unavailable. Australia

In May 2011 Borrego declared an interest in playing for Australia and becoming an Australian citizen. [22] In 2013 she attended Australia training camps as a guest. [23] In February 2015 she became a citizen. [24] In April 2015 she was included as a training partner in an Australia squad that was preparing for the 2015 Netball World Cup. [25]

Adelaide Thunderbirds are an Australian professional netball team based in Adelaide, South Australia. Since 2017 they have played in Suncorp Super Netball. Between 2008 and 2016, they played in the ANZ Championship and between 1997 and 2007, they played in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league. Thunderbirds have won five premierships. At club level, Delaney played for Contax in both the South Australia state league and the Mobil Superleague and for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league. She was a member of the Thunderbirds squad won two premierships and grand finals in 1998 and 1999.

Netball South Australia is the governing body for netball in South Australia. It is affiliated to Netball Australia. It is responsible for organizing and managing the Netball South Australia Premier League as well as numerous other leagues and competitions for junior and youth teams. It is also responsible for organizing and managing two elite level representatives teams, Adelaide Thunderbirds, who compete in the Suncorp Super Netball, and Southern Force who compete in the Australian Netball League. Its headquarters are based at Netball SA Stadium.

Carla Dziwoki is a former Australian netball player. Dziwoki played with the Queensland Firebirds in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy. She played for Team Northumbria in the 2008–09 Netball Superleague for the. She also played for Leeds Carnegie during the 2009–10 Netball Superleague season. Dziwoki rejoined the Queensland Firebirds for the 2009 ANZ Championship season after Megan Dehn withdrew from the side.

Georgia Beaton is an Australian netball player who has played for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the ANZ Championship, for Southern Force in the Australian Netball League, for Team Northumbria in the Netball Superleague and for Contax in the Netball South Australia Premier League. She was a member of the Thunderbirds team that won the 2010 ANZ Championship and of the Southern Force team that won the 2012 ANL title.

Kirby Mutton, also known as Kirby Morley, is a former Australian netball player. Mutton played for both AIS Canberra Darters and Adelaide Thunderbirds during the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era. Mutton also played for Contax in the South Australia state league and was a member of five premiership winning teams. Between 2003 and 2005, she represented Australia at under-21 level.

Peta Scholz, also known as Peta Squire, is a former Australia netball international. She was a member of the Australia teams that won the gold medals at the 1999 World Netball Championships and the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the silver medal at the 2003 World Netball Championships. Between 1997 and 2007, Scholz made 169 appearances for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league. She was a prominent member of the Thunderbirds teams that won five successive minor premierships between 1997 and 2001. She also played in six successive grand finals between 1997 and 2002, helping Thunderbirds win premierships in 1998 and 1999. In 2010 and 2011, Scholz played for Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ Championship.

The 2010 ANZ Championship season was the third season of the ANZ Championship. The 2010 season began on 20 March and concluded on 11 July. New South Wales Swifts went through the entire regular season home and away undefeated, winning 13 consecutive matches and finishing as minor premiers. They were the first team in the history of the ANZ Championship to do this. However they subsequently lost both the major semi-final and the preliminary final to Adelaide Thunderbirds and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic respectively and eventually finished the season in third place. After defeating Swifts in the major semi-final, Thunderbirds defeated Magic 52–42 in the grand final, winning their third premiership.

Chelsea Pitman is an Australian-born netball player who represented the England National Netball Team internationally until 18 September 2023. She is currently contracted as a training partner for the West Coast Fever playing in the Suncorp Super Netball competition in Australia. West Coast Fever has just became premiers after winning the Suncorp Super Netball League 2022. She is predominantly a wing attack, but can also play goal attack.

The 2012 Adelaide Thunderbirds season saw Adelaide Thunderbirds compete in the 2012 ANZ Championship. After winning nine games doing the regular season, Thunderbirds finished fourth and qualified for the play-offs. However they subsequently lost the minor semi-final 49–48 to the eventual overall champions, Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.

Jhaniele Fowler is a professional Jamaican netball player and as of 2018 a member of the West Coast Fever in the Suncorp Super Netball League. Fowler also plays domestic netball in Jamaica for the Waulgrovians club, and has been a member of the Jamaica national netball team since 2010.

Kate Walsh is an Australian netball player in the Suncorp Super Netball league, playing for the Sunshine Coast Lightning. In August 2019, Jess Thirlby the new England Roses Coach announced Shimmin would join the full time England Roses programme.

Samantha Poolman, also known as Sam Poolman, is a former Australian netball player. Between 2010 and 2015, Poolman played for NNSW Blues, NNSW Waratahs and Southern Force in the Australian Netball League. Between 2013 and 2016, she played for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the ANZ Championship. She was a member of the Thunderbirds team that won the 2013 ANZ Championship. Between 2017 and 2021, Poolman has played for Giants in Suncorp Super Netball.

Contax Netball Club are an Australian netball team based in Adelaide, South Australia. Their senior team currently plays in the Netball South Australia Premier League. Between 1989 and 1996, Contax represented Netball South Australia in the Esso/Mobil Superleague. They were premiers in 1994. They were originally known as Contax Basketball Club, when netball was known as women's basketball. During the Esso/Mobil Superleague era, they were also referred to as Adelaide Contax. Between 1995 and 2012, when the club was sponsored by ETSA, and then ETSA Utilities, they were known as ETSA Contax.

Garville Netball Club is an Australian netball team based in Woodville, Adelaide, South Australia. Their senior team currently plays in the Netball South Australia Premier League. During the 1990s they played at a national level, representing Netball South Australia in the Mobil Superleague. During the Mobil Superleague era, they were also referred to as Adelaide Garville. In 1993 they were Mobil Superleague premiers.

Malysha Kelly is a Jamaican netball player, who has made over 50 appearances for the national side, and is a former captain. At club level, she most recently played for Severn Stars in the Netball Superleague.

The 2010 Adelaide Thunderbirds season saw Adelaide Thunderbirds compete in the 2010 ANZ Championship. After winning nine games, Thunderbirds finished second, behind New South Wales Swifts, during the regular season. However, after defeating Swifts in the major semi-final, Thunderbirds defeated Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 52–42 in the grand final to win their third premiership. The 2010 season was the last season that Thunderbirds played in black, white, teal and silver, the colours of their sponsors, Port Adelaide Football Club. Ahead of the 2011 season, Thunderbirds announced they were changing their team colours to pink.
