The New York City Transit Police Department was a law enforcement agency in New York City that existed from 1953 to 1995,and is currently part of the NYPD. The roots of this organization go back to 1936 when Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia authorized the hiring of special patrolmen for the New York City Subway. These patrolmen eventually became officers of the Transit Police. In 1949,the department was officially divorced from the New York City Police Department,but was eventually fully re-integrated in 1995 as the Transit Bureau of the New York City Police Department by New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

The Highway Patrol are specialized units part of the Highway District with the Transportation Bureau of the New York City Police Department. The Highway Patrol is primarily responsible for patrolling and maintaining traffic safety on limited-access highways within New York City. The Highway Patrol's other duties and roles include accident investigations,advanced driver and radar/laser speed enforcement training for NYPD officers,field sobriety testing at the various testing locations in each Patrol Borough,dignitary and parade escorts,hazardous material and truck traffic enforcement,anti-drag racing programs,and anti-terrorist checkpoints at key bridges and intersections in the city.
CompStat—or COMPSTAT,short for COMPuter STATistics,is a computerization and quantification program used by police departments. It was originally set up by the New York City Police Department in the 1990s. Variations of the program have since been used in police departments across the world. According to a 2022 podcast by Peter Moskos with John Yohe and Billy Gorta,the name CompStat was suggested by detective Richard Mahere for the computer file name of the original program to comply with 8.3 filename conventions,short for "COMParative STATistics" and "COMPuter STATistics".
William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American law enforcement officer and businessman who served two terms as the New York City Police Commissioner. He previously served as the Commissioner of the Boston Police Department (BPD) (1993–1994) and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) (2002–2009). He is the only person to have led the police departments of the United States' two largest cities –New York and Los Angeles.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is structured into numerous bureaus and units. As a whole,the NYPD is headed by the Police Commissioner,a civilian administrator appointed by the Mayor,with the senior sworn uniformed officer of the service titled "Chief of Department". The Police Commissioner appoints the First Deputy Commissioner as the department's second-in-command and the Chief of Department as the department's highest ranking uniformed officer. The commissioner also appoints a number of deputy and assistant commissioners who do not have operational command and are solely for support and administrative function. The department is divided into twenty bureaus,six of which are enforcement bureaus. Each enforcement bureau is further subdivided into sections,divisions,and units,and into patrol boroughs,precincts,and detective squads. Each bureau is commanded by a bureau chief. There are also a number of specialized units that are not part of any of the bureaus and report to the Chief of the Department.
Throughout the history of the New York City Police Department,numerous instances of corruption and misconduct,and other allegations of such,have occurred. Over 12,000 cases have resulted in lawsuit settlements totaling over $400 million during a five-year period ending in 2014. In 2019,taxpayers funded $68,688,423 as the cost of misconduct lawsuits,a 76 percent increase over the previous year,including about $10 million paid out to two exonerated individuals who had been falsely convicted and imprisoned.
Joseph J. Esposito is a former law enforcement officer and civil servant. He is currently the Deputy Commissioner of Enforcement for the New York City Department of Buildings and formerly the Commissioner of New York City Emergency Management from June 27,2014,until his controversial ousting in November 2018. Prior to that role he was the Chief of Department of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) from 2000 until his retirement from the NYPD in 2013.
The United States police-rank model is generally quasi-military in structure. A uniform system of insignia based on that of the US Army and Marine Corps is used to help identify an officer's seniority.
The Detective Bureau is one of 20 bureaus that constitute the New York City Police Department and is headed by the three-star Chief of Detectives. The Detective Squad was formed in 1857 with the Detective Bureau later formed in 1882.

Philip Banks III is the current Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety and a retired law enforcement officer who served as NYPD chief of department in 2013 and 2014. As chief of department,Banks oversaw all patrol and specialty units. His brother,David C. Banks,has been appointed as New York City Schools Chancellor.

James Patrick "Jimmy" O'Neill Jr. is an American police officer who served as the 43rd Police Commissioner of New York City from September 2016 until November 2019. Prior to his appointment as Police Commissioner,O'Neill served as NYPD's Chief of Department,the highest uniformed position in the department,in 2014–2016.
Benjamin B. Tucker is an American police officer and administrator who was appointed First Deputy New York City Police Commissioner on Nov. 5,2014,in a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza in New York City. Commissioner Tucker is the NYPD's 43rd first deputy commissioner. "This is an amazing moment and time in my life," Tucker said. "I joined the NYPD family on November 21,1969,as an 18-year-old." He was sworn in as a police officer trainee at that time,and is now second in command of the nation's largest police force with a uniformed strength just shy of 35,000,plus several thousand in support staff. He later retired from the New York Police Department in December 2021.
Terence "Terry" Monahan is an American law enforcement officer who served as the chief of department for the New York Police Department from 2018 to 2021.
Dermot Francis Shea is a former American police officer and administrator who was the 44th New York City Police Commissioner. He assumed the position on December 1,2019,and was sworn in by Mayor Bill de Blasio in a public ceremony on December 2.
Rodney K. Harrison is an American police officer and administrator and currently serves as Commissioner of the Suffolk County Police Department. He also previously served as the Chief of Department of the NYPD. During his career as a police officer,Harrison has held other senior ranks in New York Police Department as well,such the NYPD's chief executive officer for Staten Island,Chief of Patrol and Chief of Detectives. On December 21,2021 it was announced that Harrison would become the next Police Commissioner for the Suffolk County Police Department. After his nomination was approved by the Suffolk County legislature,Harrison became the first black commissioner in the department's history.
Fausto B. Pichardo is a Dominican American police officer and administrator,and is the former Chief of Patrol Bureau in the NYPD. In this capacity he oversees some 22,000 uniformed police officers in New York City and is the first Dominican American to reach his position.
Juanita N. Holmes is an American police officer and administrator who is the Chief of the Training Bureau in the NYPD. Before the appointment of Keechant Sewell as New York City Police Commissioner on January 1,2022,Holmes was the highest-ranking female in the NYPD.
