History

Carman Hall was constructed from 1951 to 1953 and opened in 1953 following an investment of $1,150,000 and was originally built for married students and university staff. [1] [2] [3]

The building underwent renovations in 2021. [4]

Design

The building was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe who was the director of the university's department of architecture at the time. [1] It was named after George N. Carman, the first director of the Lewis Institute, one of the predecessor schools of the university. [2] [5] The building has nine floors. [4]

Carr Memorial Chapel of St. Savior, "God Box", is a modest, one-story brick building situated near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and 32nd Street on the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Notably, this is the only nonsecular structure designed by German-American modern architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who at the time served as the director of the School of Architecture.
