Carolina Country Club is a private golf and country club in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1910, it is the oldest country club in Raleigh.
Carolina Country Club was founded as Raleigh Country Club on April 15, 1910 (not to be confused with the club of the same name founded in 1948), when a certificate of incorporation was filed with the North Carolina Secretary of State. [1] [2] The original incorporators of the club were Charles Gold, E.B. Crow, Edgar Curtis Hillyer, W.H. Pace, W. C. Riddick, James H. Pou, H.E. Litchford, G.H. Andrews, C.B. Barbee, and Pleasant Daniel Gold Jr. [1] It was renamed Carolina Country Club in 1918. [1]
The first clubhouse, built on the same site of the present clubhouse, was constructed in 1910 just two miles outside of the Raleigh city limits. [1] Each member owned an interest in the club's property. [1] The first clubhouse was destroyed in a fire on Labor Day in 1919. [1]
The second clubhouse, a 166,700 cubic-foot wooden one-and-a-half story building including a basement for men's locker rooms, was built on the same site. [1] The second floor consisted of women's locker rooms and living quarters. [1] The second clubhouse opened in 1921. [1] On February 1, 1948, the second club house ws destroyed in a fire that killed the club manager, James E. Baker, and his wife, two children and mother-in-law. [1] Following the fire, a membership meeting was held at the Sir Walter Hotel where 440 stockholders approved a new building. [1] A new building was constructed, as well as tennis facilities, a golf course, and a swimming pool for $320,000. [1] The opening was featured in a two-page spread in the July issue of Life . [1]
The current clubhouse, completed in 1993, is intended to appear as an "Old Southern Home". [1] The country club is located in the Country Club Hills neighborhood, one of Raleigh's most affluent neighborhoods. [2] It has five-start platinum status with the Platinum Clubs of America and was named an Emerald Club of the World by BoardRoom Magazine. [2] The club includes an 18-hole championship golf course, a golf practice facility, twelve tennis courts (both hard surface and clay), a wellness center, a diving board pool, a diving well, and a splash zone pool. [2]
The annual North Carolina Debutante Ball is held at the club following the formal debutante presentation at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts. [3]
In 2013, the club admitted its first African-American members, Hilda Pinnix-Ragland and Alvin Ragland. [4] [5] [6]

In 2022, there were 1,280 members and a 10-year-long waitlist for applicants. [2]

Congressional opened in 1924 and its Blue Course has hosted five major championships, including three U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship. It was a biennial stop on the PGA Tour, with the Quicken Loans National hosted by Tiger Woods until 2020. Previously, Congressional hosted the former Kemper Open until its move to nearby TPC at Avenel in 1987. Congressional hosted its third U.S. Open in 2011. Tournament winners at Congressional have included Rory McIlroy, Ken Venturi, Ernie Els, Justin Rose and Tiger Woods, among many others. Congressional is generally considered one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world.

Sherwood Country Club is a private, member owned golf and country club in Lake Sherwood, California set at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains just south of city of Thousand Oaks. Sherwood is home to a championship 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, driving range and Georgian architecture golf clubhouse. Adjacent to the golf club is the tennis clubhouse, swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness facility and spa. The Country Club of North Carolina, or CCNC, is a gated golf community in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Club will be the host site of the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2030 and the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2037. CCNC will be the first golf club to host the five original USGA Amateur Championships.
Sleepy Hollow Country Club is a historic country club in Scarborough-on-Hudson in Briarcliff Manor, New York. The club was founded in 1911, and its clubhouse was known as Woodlea, a 140-room Vanderbilt mansion owned by Colonel Elliott Fitch Shepard and his wife Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard. It was built in 1892–95 at a cost of $2 million and was designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White; the estate became a contributing property to the Scarborough Historic District in 1984.
Phoenix Country Club is a country club in the southwestern United States, located in Phoenix, Arizona. The club was founded 124 years ago in 1899 and was moved to its current location in 1921. Golf Connoisseur Magazine rated Phoenix Country Club among top 100 Most Prestigious Private Clubs in America in 2006. The club was chosen for the “ultimate mix of course, history, membership, tradition and class.” In 2009 and 2014, PCC was selected by its peers as a Platinum Club of America. The original golf course designed by Harry Collis was redesigned by Tom Lehman and John Fought in 2002.
Hilda Pinnix-Ragland is an American business executive and philanthropist. As the former Vice President of Corporate Public Affairs for Duke Energy, she was the first African-American woman to serve as a vice president at the company. She previously worked as the Vice President of Energy Delivery Services, Vice President of the North Region, and Vice President of Economic Development for Progress Energy Inc and was the first African-American woman to serve as a vice president. She currently serves on the board of directors for RTI International as Chair Audit & Risk Committee, in 2016, she was appointed to the 8 Rivers Capital, an energy technology company's Board and in 2020 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of Southwest Water Company. She is often the first African-American woman board member. Pinnix-Ragland also serves as the chairwoman of the board of trustees at North Carolina A&T State University. In May 2017 she co-authored the book The Energy Within Us: An Illuminating Perspective from Five Trailblazers.
