Caroline Stein is a German operatic coloratura soprano and an academic voice teacher. She has appeared internationally, including contemporary opera, creating the Angel in Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night at the Berlin State Opera.

Career

Stein took piano and ballet lessons. [1] She studied at the Musikhochschule Köln [2] with Claudio Nicolai from 1983 to 1988. [1] She first joined the ensemble of the Theater Würzburg, and moved to the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden in 1989, [1] where she recorded in 1993 Der tapfere Soldat by Oscar Straus with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln conducted by Siegfried Köhler, alongside John Dickie and Johannes Martin Kränzle. [3] She appeared at the Berlin State Opera first in 1990 as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte . [1] She was a member of the Staatsoper Hannover from 1991 to 1999. [1]

Stein appeared at the Bayreuth Festival, as a Flower Maiden in Parsifal from 1999 to 2001, and as Woglinde in Der Ring des Nibelungen from 2002 to 2004. [4] She performed as a guest, in 1991 as Blonde in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Quebec Opera, in several stagings by Harry Kupfer at the Komische Oper Berlin, such as Die Zauberflöte and Henze's König Hirsch . She made her debut at The Proms in 2000, singing Mozart's Mass in C minor and Alban Berg's Altenberg Lieder with the Bochumer Symphoniker, conducted by Simon Rattle. [1] In 2004, she appeared as Hilda Mack in Henze's Elegie für junge Liebende at the Berlin State Opera. [1] [5] In contemporary opera, she appeared there as the Angel in the premiere of Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night in 2006. [6]

Stein was nominated for Singer of the Year in 1989 by Opernwelt for her two parts in the German premiere of Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre . [1] She was awarded a prize in the national competition Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin in 1990. [7]

Stein was a professor of voice at the Musikhochschule Rostock from 2010, and was appointed in 2012 professor of voice at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. [2]

<i>Faustus, the Last Night</i> Opera by Pascal Dusapin

Faustus, the Last Night is an opera in English by French composer Pascal Dusapin, inspired by Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. The work was premiered on 21 January 2006 by the Berlin State Opera, a coproduction with the Opéra de Lyon. It was first staged in the United States at the Spoleto Festival USA 2007.

Hanno Müller-Brachmann is a German bass-baritone who made an international career in both opera and concert. A member of the Berlin State Opera from 1998 to 2011, he first sang Mozart roles such as Papageno and Figaro, and created roles in premieres such as Mephistopheles in Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night in 2006.

Georg Nigl is an Austrian baritone in opera and concert, and a professor of voice at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Performing internationally, he is known for roles in contemporary operas, such as creating the title role in Pascal Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night at the Berlin State Opera. He names as his favourite roles Monteverdi's Orfeo, Mozart's Papageno and Alban Berg's Wozzeck.

Johannes Martin Kränzle is a German baritone in opera and concert who has made an international career. For years a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he was chosen as Singer of the Year in 2011 after creating the leading role in Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House as Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte, and at the Bayreuth Festival as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 2017.

Christina Gerstberger is a German operatic soprano. The award-winning singer has worked freelance and as a member of theatres such as the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, often in roles by Mozart such as Susanna. She has performed at international festivals such as the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, and in concert and recordings.

Cornelia Wulkopf is a German operatic mezzo-soprano and contralto. A long-time member of the Bavarian State Opera, she has performed leading parts at international opera houses and festivals. She made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the Jahrhundertring and sang in Franz Schmidt's Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln at the Salzburg Festival.

Anke Sieloff is a German opera, operetta, and musical soprano and mezzo-soprano. A member of the Musiktheater im Revier, she has focused on musical roles such as Maria in West Side Story, the title characters in both Kiss Me, Kate and Evita, and a witch in the first German production of The Witches of Eastwick. She taught both classical singing and pop singing at music universities.

Andrea Ihle is a German operatic soprano. A long-term member of the Staatsoper Dresden, she performed a wide range of roles from coloratura soprano to character roles. A member of the ensemble of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden since 2015, she has performed leading roles such as Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Rosina in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Bizet's Carmen, and the title role in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. Her concert repertoire includes Oskar Gottlieb Blarr's Jesus-Passion and Verdi's Requiem.
