Carolyn Watson attended Figtree High School and studied at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music before pursuing an undergraduate degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. From there, she furthered her studies at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary, from which she graduated with an Advanced Diploma.
Subsequently, she pursued graduate conducting studies with David Zinman at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen and at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Imre Palló. She has also participated in master classes with Marin Alsop, Peter Eötvös, Yoel Levi, Martyn Brabbins and Alex Polishchuk.
Carolyn Watson was a prizewinner at the 2012 Emmerich Kálmán International Operetta Conducting Competition in Budapest, Hungary [1] where she placed Third and received the Herend Porcelain Manufacturer's Special Prize and the Special Prize of the Kodály Philharmonia. [2]
In 2013, Watson won the Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian conductors as part of the 13th Helpmann Awards and was awarded a Dome Centenary Fellowship from the State Library of Victoria. [3] She was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship (2012), [4] the Sir Charles Mackerras Conducting Prize from the Australian Music Foundation in London (2008) [5] and the Nelly Apt Conducting Scholarship (2008). [6] Watson was also the recipient of Opera Foundation Australia's New Berlin Music Opera Award in 2012 and the Bayreuth Opera Award in 2009. [7] Also in 2013, Watson moved to the United States when she was appointed Music Director of the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra at Interlochen Center for the Arts [8] with whom she was awarded the 2015 American Prize in Orchestral Performance.
Watson is currently Music Director of the La Porte County Symphony in Indiana and Principal Guest Conductor of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra. Since moving to the US she has conducted the Amarillo Opera, Austin Symphony, Catskill Symphony, Dallas Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Kansas City Ballet, Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, St. Joseph Symphony, and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. Future engagements see debuts with the Cape Symphony, Traverse Symphony Orchestra and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, as well as return engagements with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Kansas City Ballet.
Notable European credits include Infektion!, a festival of modern theatre celebrating the works of John Cage at the Staatsoper Berlin, conducting musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic in Interaktion, a residency at the Israeli National Opera, and assisting Sir Charles Mackerras on his final two productions at The Royal Opera, Covent Garden and Glyndebourne. Additional international conducting credits include the Brandenburger Symphoniker, BBC Concert Orchestra, Budapest Operetta Theatre, Bulgarian State Opera Bourgas, Duna Szimfonikus Budapest, North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Kammerphilharmonie Graz, Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen, Mihail Jora Philharmonic Romania, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and in Russia, the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. In Australia she has worked with the Conservatorium High School, Darwin Symphony, Monash Academy Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, SBS Youth Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Sydney Symphony, Sydney Youth Orchestra, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, Tasmania Discovery Orchestra and Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.
Watson was recognized in 2021 by the Australian government as a leading global Australian and finalist in the Arts Category of the Advance Awards, and in 2022 she was appointed as Director of Orchestras at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. [9]
Watson holds a PhD in Conducting from the University of Sydney, where the subject of her doctoral dissertation was titled Gesture as Communication: The Art of Carlos Kleiber. [10]

István Kertész was a Hungarian orchestral and operatic conductor who throughout his brief career led many of the world's great orchestras, including the Cleveland, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Francisco and Minnesota Orchestras in the United States, as well as the London Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, and L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. His orchestral repertoire numbered over 450 works from all periods, and was matched by a repertoire of some sixty operas ranging from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Wagner to the more contemporary Prokofiev, Bartók, Britten, Kodály, Poulenc and Janáček. Kertész was part of a musical tradition that produced fellow Hungarian conductors Fritz Reiner, Antal Doráti, János Ferencsik, Eugene Ormandy, George Szell, János Fürst, Peter Erős, Ferenc Fricsay, and Georg Solti.
Sir Alan Charles MacLaurin Mackerras was an Australian conductor. He was an authority on the operas of Janáček and Mozart, and the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He was long associated with the English National Opera and Welsh National Opera and was the first Australian chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He also specialized in Czech music as a whole, producing many recordings for the Czech label Supraphon.
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is an Australian symphony orchestra based in Sydney. With roots going back to 1908, the orchestra was made a permanent professional orchestra on the formation of the Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1932. The orchestra has performed at the Sydney Opera House as its home concert hall, since the venue's opening in 1973. The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra is Hungary's oldest extant orchestra. It was founded in 1853 by Ferenc Erkel under the auspices of the Budapest Philharmonic Society. For many years it was Hungary's only professional orchestra. The ensemble is an independent body, now organised by musicians of the Opera House, directed by the chairman-conductor and the board of directors. Its main concert venue is the Hungarian State Opera House, where they give around ten concerts per year.

Imre Palló is a Hungarian-born conductor. His father, Imre Palló, was the leading baritone of the Budapest State Opera for 50 years, and also director of the company from 1956–1960. The composer Zoltán Kodály was an intimate friend of the Palló family, and was his godfather, playing a very influential role in his early musical training and education. He studied with Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music, and privately with Ferenc Fricsay. He served as Fricsay's personal assistant at the Salzburg Summer Festival, and also as the assistant to Herbert von Karajan and Karl Böhm at the Salzburg and Vienna Festivals from 1961–1964. He was also the assistant to Antal Dorati for the Haydn recordings with the Philharmonica Hungarica for the Decca label.
William Edward Motzing Jr. was an American composer, conductor, arranger and trombonist best known for the award-winning film and television scores and gold and platinum pop album arrangements he wrote in Australia. He was a jazz lecturer and the Director of Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music over a period of 40 years.
