Cathy Reese is the current head coach of the women's lacrosse team at the University of Maryland. She has coached the Maryland Terrapins to a five championship wins and has been inducted into the University of Maryland Hall of Fame on November 2, 2018. [1] [2]
Reese attended Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City, Maryland. When she graduated in 1994, she had many accomplishments:
Reese married former Maryland lacrosse player Brian Reese, and has four children: the oldest, Riley, second son, Brody, only daughter, Cayden and youngest son, Braxton.
Reese played for the University of Maryland from 1994-1998. During that time, the team captured four national championship wins, in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998. [3] After the 1998 National Collegiate Athletics Association Tournament, Reese was named the Most Valuable Player. Reese graduated in 1998 with a bachelor of arts degree in business communication. After graduating, Reese was the assistant coach for the women's lacrosse team at Maryland from 1999 to 2004. She then moved to the University of Denver and served as the head coach of the women's lacrosse team from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, Reese was offered the job as the head coach at the University of Maryland. [4] In her time as head coach at Maryland, Reese has helped her team win five national championships, in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019. [4] Reese led her team to six consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Championships, from 2009 to 2014. [5] In her years of coaching, Reese has coached several Tewaaraton Award winners, Tewarraton Award finalists, and many All-Americans. [4]
Reese has won many individual coaching awards while at Maryland. In 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 she was named Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, as well as being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2016, 2017, and 2018. [4] She was also named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2010, 2014, and 2015. [4] The University of Maryland's Hall of Fame honors players and coaches who have made a significant impact on the school. [1] On November 2, 2018, Reese was one of the nine University of Maryland alumni that were chosen to be inducted into the university's Hall of Fame. [1] She was inducted for both her exceptional coaching and as a player.
Gary Charles Gait is a Canadian retired professional lacrosse player and currently the head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Syracuse University, where he played the sport collegiately. On January 24, 2017, he was named the Interim Commissioner of the United Women's Lacrosse League.
Karen Christina Shelton is the current head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels field hockey. Shelton is a former field hockey player from the United States, who was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1977–84 and a starter on the team that won the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. She attended West Chester State and was a member of three field hockey NCAA championship winning teams and one lacrosse NCAA national championship team. She qualified for the 1980 Olympic team but did not compete due to the Olympic Committee's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. As consolation, she was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal many years later.
Ann "Muffet" McGraw is an American former college basketball coach, who served as the head women's basketball coach at Notre Dame from 1987 to 2020, compiling a 905–272 (.769) record over 32 seasons. She led her team to nine Final Fours, seven championship game appearances, and two National Championships in 2001 and 2018.
Danielle Ruth Garrett Fotopoulos, née Danielle Ruth Garrett, is an American soccer coach and former player. Fotopoulos holds the all-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I records for goals and points, and was a member of the University of Florida team that won the 1998 NCAA women's soccer championship, and also the United States national team that won the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. She is the head coach of the Eckerd women's soccer team.
Victoria Andrea Bullett is an American former professional basketball player and current women's basketball head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College. She played for the Charlotte Sting and Washington Mystics in the WNBA, as well as for European and South American professional teams, the U.S. Olympic team, and the University of Maryland Terrapins. Bullett played at various times as a center, small forward, and power forward. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
Chris Weller is a former University of Maryland, College Park women's basketball coach who led the Lady Terps for 27 seasons from 1975 until 2002. Weller was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
Shannon Danise Higgins-Cirovski is a former U.S. soccer midfielder who earned fifty-one caps with the United States between 1987 and 1991. She was a member of the U.S. team at the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Jen Adams is the head women's lacrosse coach at Loyola University Maryland and was an All-American lacrosse player at the University of Maryland from 1998 to 2001, leading the Terrapins to national titles for four straight years, including a perfect 21 and 0 record in 1999, as well as a perfect 23 and 0 record in 2001. Maryland under coach Cindy Timchal won seven national titles in a row from 1995 through 2001. The Maryland lacrosse team has more Women's Division I lacrosse titles (14) than any other program. In the 2000 NCAA Lacrosse championship game, Adams scored five goals and had five assists, all in the second half, to turn a close game into a 16–8 victory over Princeton. While at Maryland, Adams was the first ever recipient of the Honda Award for women's lacrosse, awarded to the top player in a Division I school.
Amanda Moore O'Leary, née Amanda Moore and also known by her nickname Mandee O'Leary, is an American college lacrosse coach and former player. O'Leary was an All-American lacrosse midfielder for the Temple Owls women's lacrosse team of Temple University, and she is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. O'Leary was the head coach of the Yale Bulldogs women's lacrosse team of Yale University, and she is now the head coach of the Florida Gators women's lacrosse team of the University of Florida.
Richard Irving Edell was an American lacrosse coach. He served as the head coach for the University of Maryland, United States Military Academy, and University of Baltimore's men's lacrosse teams. Edell was inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2004, at which time he held the second-most NCAA tournament appearances of any head coach.
Margaret Pearl "Digit" Murphy is an American ice hockey coach, administrator, and former college ice hockey player. She is president of the Toronto Six of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).
Cindy Timchal is an American lacrosse coach. She is the head women's lacrosse coach at the United States Naval Academy. She has coached for some of the top programs in college women's lacrosse, including Northwestern University, University of Maryland. At Maryland Timchal coached the Terrapins to seven straight NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships.
Sarah Forbes is a volunteer women's lacrosse assistant coach at the University of Maryland. Originally from the Wembley Lacrosse Club in Perth, Western Australia, Forbes played for the University of Maryland Terrapins, and won three national championships as a player. She was a three-time All-American, and was named the ACC Female Athlete of the Year in 1997.
The North Carolina Tar Heels women's lacrosse team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women's lacrosse and currently competes as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The North Carolina women's lacrosse team won the ACC tournament in 2002 and their first Division 1 National Championship in 2013.
The Virginia Cavaliers women's lacrosse team is an NCAA Division I college lacrosse team representing the University of Virginia as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They play their home games at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Tina Sloan Green is a former women's lacrosse head coach of the Temple Owls from 1975 to 1992. Apart from coaching, she was the first African American to play for the United States women's national field hockey team from 1969 to 1973. Sloan Green was inducted into the US National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997, the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
Lindsey Munday is a former collegiate women's lacrosse player who won two national championships at Northwestern and has served since 2013 as the inaugural head coach of the USC Trojans women's lacrosse team.
Dorothy “Dottie” B. McKnight worked as the executive director of the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports, a university professor, a varsity coach, and an advocate for sex equity in athletics.
Denise Wescott is an American lacrosse coach. She has been the head coach of several college women's lacrosse teams, including Delaware, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, and Rutgers. Wescott won more than 200 games in her college coaching career. She also coached the Germany women's national lacrosse team. The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inducted Wescott in 2018.
Shannon Elizabeth Smith is an American lacrosse coach and former player. Smith concluded her collegiate career at Northwestern University as their all-time leading goal scorer with 254, three-time IWLCA first-team All-American, three-time All-ALC first-team choice, and a two-time MVP of the NCAA Championship.
