The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports; in football, it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly referred to as Division I-AA.
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a public historically black university in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Founded in 1873, it is the second oldest public college or university in Arkansas. It was one of about 180 "normal schools" established by state governments in the 19th century to train teachers for the rapidly growing public common schools. It was one of 23 established to train African Americans to teach in segregated schools. Some of the 180 closed but most steadily expanded their role and became state colleges in the early 20th century and state universities in the late 20th century. UAPB is part of the University of Arkansas System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
The Delta Classic 4 Literacy was a college football game held between historically black colleges. It was held annually in Little Rock, Arkansas from 2006 to 2012.
George Ivory is the head men's basketball coach for Mississippi Valley State University. He was the head men's basketball coach at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 2008 to 2021. Archie "Gunslinger" Cooley is an American former college football coach. The Southern Heritage Classic presented by FedEx is an annual historically black college football game between the Golden Lions of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) and the Tigers of Tennessee State University. UAPB replaced Jackson State University after Jackson State played 29 games in the classic.
Don Treadwell is an American college football coach and former player. He was most recently the interim head coach at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, having previously served as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach on Doc Gamble's staff. Treadwell served as the head football coach at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from 2011 to 2013 and as the offensive coordinator at Michigan State University from 2007 to 2010. He also acted as interim head coach after Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack during the 2010 season. However, Michigan State credits the entire season to Dantonio's record.
Vannette William Johnson was an American football and track coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff—known as Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College prior to 1972—for 11 seasons, from 1962 to 1972, and compiled a record of 53–46–6.
James Edward Shaw was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for four seasons, from 1976 to 1979, compiling a record of 15–24–1. A graduated of Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama, Shaw began his coaching career at Carver High School in Bessemer, Alabama. He was assistant football coach at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College—now known as Alcorn State University—from 1966 to 1968 and at Eastern Michigan University, where he earned a master's degree in health and physical education. Shaw was the offensive coordinator at Southern University for four seasons, from 1972 to 1975, prior to being hired at Arkansas–Pine Bluff in January 1976.
Tederal Duralle White is an American football coach and former quarterback. Before coaching, White played for the Frankfurt Galaxy and Barcelona Dragons as part of NFL Europe in the early 2000s. From 2003 to 2005, White was the backup quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. With both leagues, White had a combined total of 2,568 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Harold Blevins is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He was a four-year starter for the Arkansas AM&N Golden Lions, where he is considered one of the program's greatest scorers. Blevins was a three-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American and four-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) selection.

He previously coached for Warren High School, Dumas High School, Arkansas–Pine Bluff, Western Kentucky, Tift County High School, South Florida, Oregon, Florida State, Arkansas, and Louisiana–Monroe.
