Celia Welch (born 1960 as Celia Masyczek) [1] is an American winemaker. [2] She is known for developing vintages in Napa Valley for a number of wineries, [3] and the San Francisco Chronicle described her as a member "of an elite order of Napa winemaking consultants." [4] She launched her own label, Corra, in 2004. [5]

Early life and education

Born Celia Masyczek in 1960, [1] Welch grew up in Medford, Oregon. She and her siblings spent their childhoods with a half-acre vineyard in their backyard, and her father was a home winemaker and wine collector. [5] She attended the University of California, Davis, graduating in 1982 after studying viticulture. [5]

Career

1991-2010

She was hired by Shari Staglin of Staglin Family Vineyard as a consulting winemaker in 1991, and was involved in the wine industry in Napa Valley during the small-winery boom that took place in the early 1990s. She made wines for labels such as Barbour, Lindstrom, and Yount Ridge. [5] By 2008, she had also worked for cabernet producers such as DR Stephens, Cornerstone, Scarecrow, Lindstrom, Husic, Calistoga, Carneros, Kelly Fleming, Hollywood & Vine, [1] and Keever Vineyards. [5] [1]

She launched her own label, Corra, in 2004, [5] with a 200-case-production cabernet sauvignon. [1] In 2008, she earned Food and Wine magazine's Winemaker of the Year Award. [5] [1]

2011-2023

The Orange County Register reported in 2019 that Welch was primarily focused on Yount Ridge Cellars, a Napa Valley vineyard near Oakville, California. Welch, who started making wine for its owners in 2006, shared a partnership interest in the company. [6]

In August 2019, she began selling for Corra label in the United Kingdom for the first time, selling through James Hocking Wine. [7] According to Dave McIntyre for the Washington Post, as a consulting winemaker, by 2019 she had "crafted some of Napa’s most touted, and most expensive, cabernets," noting her cabernet vintages for Scarecrow. Earlier that year, the wine app Vivino had named her vintage Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 as "the best wine in the world," according to data mining of the "40 million reviews and 120 million ratings its members posted online" in 2018. In 2022, the San Francisco Chronicle described her as a member "of an elite order of Napa winemaking consultants" along with Philippe Melka, Mike Smith, Andy Erickson, Aaron Pott, Julien Fayard, Jean Hoeflinger, Sam Kaplan, Tony Biagi and Heidi Barrett. [4]

Twomey has three wineries: one in Calistoga in the Napa Valley; one in Healdsburg in the Russian River Valley; one in Philo in Anderson Valley, and produces mainly Pinot noir and Sauvignon blanc. Twomey’s Sauvignon blanc is a blend of Sauvignon blanc grapes from their estate vineyards at their wineries in Napa Valley, Anderson Valley, and Russian River Valley.

Daniel Baron is an American winemaker. He is best known for his work with the Duncan family-owned Silver Oak Cellars and Twomey Cellars, and was Director of Winemaking for both. After his retirement in 2017, he launched Complant Wine with his son, Sam Baron, to produce small production, artisanal, single vineyard wines. Originally a field worker for John Rolleri at Chateau Montelena, he gained experience in the Bordeaux region of France and was mentored by the likes of grape geneticist Professor Harold Olmo, and winemakers Jean-Claude Berrouet and Justin Meyer. He became general manager of Christian Moueix's Dominus Estate in the 1980s. He became winemaker for Silver Oak, an exclusive Cabernet Sauvignon producer, in 1994, and was trained by Justin Meyer to follow in his footsteps as Silver Oak's winemaker before Meyer’s retirement in 2001. In 1999, Baron was instrumental in persuading the Duncans to establish Twomey to pursue Merlot, Pinot noir, and Sauvignon blanc after discovering high quality Merlot grapes on Silver Oak’s Soda Canyon Ranch Vineyard. He has served on boards such as the American Society of Enology and Viticulture and the Napa Valley Wine Technical Group.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Force Majeure Vineyards</span>

Force Majeure is a Washington/Oregon wine estate, specializing in Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon as well as other Bordeaux and Rhone-inspired blends. The brand was founded in 2004, and beginning with that vintage began the "Collaboration Series" of wines made by some of Washington's top winemakers, using fruit from Red Mountain's Ciel du Cheval vineyard. Since 2014, the wines have been made by acclaimed winemaker Todd Alexander, who moved from the Napa Valley to the Pacific Northwest at that time. The brand labels also changed in 2014, to signify the winemaking change and the use of their estate vineyards for the wines, going forward. Todd Alexander continues to craft these limited production wines to this day.

Cakebread Cellars is a Napa Valley winery known for its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines, which are internationally distributed. Founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread in Rutherford, California, the winery produces approximately 200,000 cases of wine per year.
