Founded in 2014 by Nancy Zastudil, [1] Central Features Contemporary Art is a contemporary art gallery located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. [2] The gallery exhibits a range of visual media but its focus is on the importance of art-making and the roles artists play in environmental and social issues. [3] The gallery participates in Albuquerque’s creative economy by partnering with local artists and businesses to present events and programs that highlight collaboration including an artist-led dinner with Dig & Serve, [4] On the Map: Unfolding Albuquerque Art + Design, [5] and PhotoSummer. [6] Included in the Central Features exhibition program is Pacific Exhibits, a downtown Albuquerque window exhibition space dedicated to showcasing local artists. [7]

The gallery roster of artists include primarily emerging and mid-career artists based in Albuquerque including Nina Elder, Jami Porter Lara, [8] Jessamyn Lovell, [9] Jennifer Nehrbass, [10] and Raychael Stine. [11]

History

Nancy Zastudil relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, from Houston, Texas, [12] where she worked as a freelance arts writer and curator and held the position of Associate Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston. In Albuquerque, before opening Central Features, she launched a temporary downtown visiting artist exhibition program called Show Up Show Down as well as an exhibition window called Pacific Exhibits.

Whitfield Lovell is a contemporary African-American artist who is known primarily for his drawings of African-American individuals from the first half of the 20th century. Lovell creates these drawings in pencil, oil stick, or charcoal on paper, wood, or directly on walls. In his most recent work, these drawings are paired with found objects that Lovell collects at flea markets and antique shops.

The Rosamund Felsen Gallery is one of the longest-running art galleries in Los Angeles, California, involved in and influencing the broader American art community since its establishment in 1978. The gallery has operated four locations since its inception: first on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles, then on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, later at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, and finally in the Arts District, Los Angeles in Downtown Los Angeles.

Luis E. Tapia is a self-taught artist living in New Mexico best known for his innovative wood carvings that blend the local bulto tradition with contemporary culture and co-founding La Cofradia de Artes y Artesanos Hispanicos with artist Frederico Vigil. He has also done major restoration work at churches, including the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos. Tapia's awards include an NEA grant in 1980 and a New Mexico Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts in 1996.

Jennifer Nehrbass is an Albuquerque-based mixed media artist, with a focus on collage and painting.

Betty Hahn is an American photographer known for working in alternative and early photographic processes. She completed both her BFA (1963) and MFA (1966) at Indiana University. Initially, Hahn worked in other two-dimensional art mediums before focusing on photography in graduate school. She is well-recognized due to her experimentation with experimental photographic methods which incorporate different forms of media. By transcending traditional concepts of photography, Hahn challenges the viewer not only to assess the content of the image, but also to contemplate the photographic object itself.

Richard Levy Gallery, established in 1991 in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, specializes in contemporary art. The gallery program includes work by John Baldessari, Thomas Barrow, Wilson Bentley, William Betts, Debra Bloomfield, Xuan Chen, John Chervinsky, Constance DeJong, Richard Estes, Alex Katz, Jeff Kellar, Jay Kelly, Jenna Kuiper, Isa Leshko, Matt Magee, Rania Matar, Matthew McConville, Emi Ozawa, Gordon Parks, Antoine Predock, Willy Bo Richardson, Ed Ruscha, Manjari Sharma, Eric Tillinghast, Mary Tsiongas, James Turrell, Tom Waldron, and Pablo Zuleta Zahr. The gallery has participated in special global initiatives like 2015 On the Map: Unfolding Albuquerque Art + Design, ISEA 2012: Machine Wilderness and 2009's LAND/ART New Mexico.

Holly Roberts is an American visual artist known best for her combination of photography and paint. “Holly Roberts caused a stir in the fine art photography world of the eighties by fusing painting and photography, painting directly onto photographs”. Roberts lives and works in Corrales, New Mexico. Her work is in the permanent collection of several museums in the United States.

Jessamyn Lovell is a visual artist who primarily uses photography, video, and performance. She has a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MFA from California College for the Arts. In 2007 Lovell won the first Aperture Portfolio Prize for her work entitled Catastrophe, Crisis, and Other Family Traditions. However, Lovell is most well known for her work entitled Dear Erin Hart, in which she found, followed, and photographed her identity thief, Erin Hart. More recently Lovell obtained her private investigator license, as part of her artwork entitled D.I.Y. P.I..

Raychael Stine is an American painter and educator. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and is a professor at the University of New Mexico.

Matt Magee is an American contemporary artist who is best known for his minimal abstract geometric paintings, sculptures, prints, assemblages, murals and photographs. He was born in Paris, France in 1961 and moved from there to Tripoli, Libya and then to London. He moved to Brooklyn in 1984 to attend Pratt Institute for an MFA after completing a BA in Art History at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. He maintained a studio on New York City until 2012 and currently lives in Phoenix, AZ.

He has worked en plein air in remote areas of New Mexico, the Arctic Circle in Norway, was the first wintertime artist resident in Denali National Park, and recently spent three weeks on Rabbit Island in Lake Superior, where he was awarded one of four funded residencies. Many of his landscape paintings explore contemporary themes of globalization and environmental concerns.

Nina Elder is an American transdisciplinary artist, writer, muralist, and educator. Her practice is informed by science, field research, and social justice movements. Elder's research based processes result in realistic drawings, performative lectures, and video work. Her writing and teaching hybridize art and science to connect nature and culture. She travels extensively, participating in scientific research and lecturing at universities. She has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Michael David Cook is an American painter and professor. He is an emeritus professor of painting and drawing at the University of New Mexico.

Pat Colville is a contemporary American artist who works in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Her work holds a commitment to abstraction and is influenced by early Asian landscape paintings.

Sheri Crider is an American artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has exhibited across the United States. Crider's work spans various mediums, including sculpture, painting, drawing, and video, and explores criminal justice reform and its impact on the lives of marginalized individuals.

Devendra Narayan Contractor is an American architect known for his work in New Mexico on education, fine arts and performing arts facilities. He is the founder and principal architect at DNCA, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Contractor is notable for his work in historic preservation, challenging revival style conventions while referencing materials and methods of traditional New Mexico architecture.
