The 2018 Central Java gubernatorial election was held on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was conducted to elect the governor of Central Java alongside with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah) will be re-elected in 2019.

Central Java Province in Indonesia

Central Java is a province of Indonesia. This province is located in the middle of the island of Java. Its administrative capital is Semarang. The province is bordered by West Java in the west, the Indian Ocean and the Special Region of Yogyakarta in the south, East Java in the east, and the Java Sea in the north. The area is 32,548 km², or around 28.94% of the total area of Java. The province of Central Java also includes the island of Nusakambangan in the south, and the Karimun Jawa Islands in the Java Sea. Central Java is also a cultural concept that includes the Special Region and city of Yogyakarta as well as the Province of Central Java. However, administratively the city and its surrounding regencies have formed a separate special region since Indonesian independence, administrated separately. Central Java is known as the "heart" of Javanese culture. Even so, in this province there are also other ethnic groups that have different cultures from the Javanese, such as the Sundanese in the border area with West Java. Besides there are also Chinese-Indonesians, Arabs-Indonesians and Indian-Indonesians scattered throughout the province.

Incumbent governor Ganjar Pranowo ran for his second term in office against former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said. Despite polling lower than expected by most surveys, Ganjar managed to defeat Said to secure his second term as governor.

Ganjar Pranowo governor of Central Java, Indonesia

Ganjar Pranowo is an Indonesian politician and the current governor of Central Java. He has attempted to reorganize governmental administration, ordering the acting mayor of Tegal to reform the city's bureaucracy and civil services after the Corruption Eradication Commission arrested the previous mayor.

Sudirman Said is the former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia on the Working Cabinet from 27 October 2014 to 27 July 2016. He was replaced by Arcandra Tahar in the second cabinet reshuffle. He is known as an anti corruption figure.

Timeline

On September 10, the General Elections Commission declared a voter count of 27,409,316 in the province. [2] Voting will be done in 64,171 polling stations across the province. [3]

Registration for party-backed candidates were opened between 8 and 10 January 2018, while independent candidates were required to register between 22 and 26 November 2017. [4] [5] The campaigning period would commence between 15 February and 24 June, with a three-day election silence before voting on 27 June. [6]

Election silence, pre-election silence, electoral silence, or campaign silence is a ban on political campaigning prior to a presidential or general election. Under this rule, in some jurisdictions, such as Slovenia, it is forbidden to try to convince people to vote for a specific candidate or political party on the day of election. Some jurisdictions have declared that, legally, election silence is in violation of law regarding freedom of speech. It is however used in some of the world's democracies "in order to balance out the campaigning and maintain a free voting environment".

Candidates

Under regulations, candidates are required to secure the support of a political party or a coalition thereof comprising at least 20 seats in the regional house. Alternatively, independent candidates may run provided they are capable of securing support from 6.5 percent of the total voter population (1,781,606) in form of photocopied ID cards subject to verification by the local committee although no candidates expressing interest managed to do this. Incumbent Ganjar Pranowo, who had run with PDI-P in the 2013 elections, once again did so and the party declared him as the candidate on 7 January 2018. [8] His deputy and old running mate Heru Sudjatmoko (id) also expressed an intention to run and the pair collected KPU's registration form together. [9] However, on the candidate declaration Megawati Soekarnoputri declared Taj Yasin Maimoen from PPP, son of senior politician and ulema Maimun Zubair (id). [10] According to 67-year old Heru, he had accepted the party's decision and plans to retire soon. [11] PPP, which had earlier submitted possible running mates for Ganjar includin, officially backed the pair on 9 January. [12] [13] Nasdem and Demokrat submitted their support on the same day, while Golkar did so on 10 January. [14] [15] [16]

United Development Party political party in Indonesia

The United Development Party is an Islam-based political party in Indonesia. Due to its distinctive logo, the party is nicknamed "Kaaba Party".

The Nasdem Party is a corporatist political party in Indonesia. It is partly funded by media baron Surya Paloh who founded the similarly named organization, National Democrats. Despite this, and logo similarity, Nasional Demokrat has insisted that it is not linked with the party.

Democratic Party (Indonesia) political party in Indonesia

The Democratic Party is a centre-right political party in Indonesia. It was founded on 9 September 2001. Its ideology is based on the Indonesian concept of Pancasila, and identifies as centrist.

The coalition of Gerindra, PKS and PAN declared Sudirman Said, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources between 2014-2016, as their gubernatorial candidate on 27 December 2017. [17] A non-official faction of PPP, headed by Djan Faridz, also expressed its support for Said. [18] PKB, which initially supported Ganjar, threw its weight behind Said and placed their cadre Ida Fauziyah as his running mate. Ida is a member of the People's Representative Council, where she serves as speaker of her party's faction. [19] [20]
