The 2018 West Java gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of West Java alongside with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah) will be re-elected in 2019.
West Java is a province of Indonesia. It is located in the western part of the island of Java and its capital and largest urban center is Bandung, although much of its population in the northwest corner of the province live in areas suburban to the larger urban area of Jakarta, though that city itself lies outside the administrative province. With a population of 46.3 million West Java is the most populous of Indonesia's provinces.
Incumbent Ahmad Heryawan was barred from participating in the re-elections after having served two full terms. Candidates included the sitting vice governor Deddy Mizwar, mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil, People's Representative Council member Tubagus Hasanuddin and retired major general Sudrajat.
Ahmad Heryawan is an Indonesian politician who served as the Governor of West Java Province between 2008 and 2018. He was inaugurated in April 2008, after winning the West Java gubernatorial election in March 2008. Ahmad Heryawan, together with his running mate Yusuf Macan Effendie, was the governor candidate from PKS and PAN coalition, running the gubernatorial election against Agum Gumelar – Nu'man Abdul Hakim from PDIP and PPP coalition and Danny Setiawan – Iwan Ridwan Sulandjana from Golkar and PD coalition.
Deddy Mizwar is an Indonesian actor and film director in Indonesia, born of an Indo father and Betawi mother. He is the Chairman of Indonesia's National Film Council and the Vice Governor In West Java. He also ran for governorship of the province in the 2018 election.
Bandung is the capital of West Java province in Indonesia. According to the 2015 census, it is Indonesia's fourth most populous city after Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bekasi with over 2.5 million inhabitants. At the meantime, Greater Bandung is the country's third largest metropolitan area with over 8 million inhabitants. Located 768 metres above sea level, approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Jakarta, Bandung has cooler year-round temperatures than most other Indonesian cities. The city lies on a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains. This topography provides a natural defense system, which was the primary reason for the Dutch East Indies government's plan to move the colony capital from Batavia to Bandung.
On 10 September 2017, the KPU declared that there will be 32,809,057 eligible voters in the province, down about 200 thousand from in 2013. [2]
Registration for party-backed candidates were opened between 8 and 10 January 2018, while independent candidates were required to register between 22 to 26 November 2017. [3] [4] The numerical order of the candidates were determined on 13 February through a lottery. [5] The campaigning period would commence between 15 February and 24 June, with a three-day election silence before voting on 27 June. [6]
Election silence, pre-election silence, electoral silence, or campaign silence is a ban on political campaigning before, and in some countries during, a presidential or general election. Under this rule, in some jurisdictions, such as Slovenia and Poland, it is forbidden to try to convince people to vote for a specific candidate or political party on the day of election. Some jurisdictions have declared that, legally, election silence is in violation of law regarding freedom of speech. It is however used in some of the world's democracies "in order to balance out the campaigning and maintain a free voting environment".
Under regulations, candidates are required to secure the support of a political party or a coalition thereof comprising at least 20 seats in the regional house. Alternatively, independent candidates may run provided they are capable of securing support from 6.5 percent of the total voter population (2,132,470) in form of photocopied ID cards subject to verification by the local committee although no candidates expressing interest managed to do this.
