A historic rival in both basketball and football, Kentucky and nearby Centre College always played fiercely against each other. Centre with Transylvania and Georgetown College, Centre rounded off Kentucky's major rivalries before Rupp and long before Louisville or Indiana.

Game in 1918 cancelled due to flu epidemic. Kentucky is known as Kentucky State College before 1913. Centre merges with Central in 1901.

Starting in 1906, Kentucky won the first three games but only before Centre College did the same, tying the series at 3. For the next three games Kentucky and Centre traded wins and the series lead, until Centre went on a five-game winning streak to break the tie.
The series was put on hold in 1910 and resumed in 1912 with Kentucky winning both games that year. The series was again put on hold for the 1913 and 1914 seasons. The next year the two met in Danville, with the result being the same, Kentucky blowing out Centre 38–5. Kentucky would win the next three games and extend their win streak to five, tying Centre's longest streak. The streak was snapped at five when Centre beat Kentucky twice in the next three games.
Starting in 1918 it was Centre's turn to dominate once again. The Colonels would rally of six straight wins over the Wildcats, once again taking the series lead over Kentucky. Kentucky would bounce back and win three straight games, but Centre responded by winning the following two. These two wins would be Centre's last against Kentucky.
Going into the '20s Kentucky held a losing record of 15–11 to their rival. Kentucky however was shedding its label as a struggling program under Coach Buncheit and later Coach Mauer. Kentucky would defeat Centre in every game after 1924, carrying their win streak to a total of 11 by the end of the series in 1930. The same year Coach Rupp would take the coaching job after John Mauer.

The Virginia–Virginia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Virginia Cavaliers football team of the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech Hokies football team of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The two schools first met in 1895 and have played annually since 1970. The game counts for 1 point in the Commonwealth Clash each year, and is part of the greater Virginia–Virginia Tech rivalry.
Adolph Frederick Rupp was an American college basketball coach. He is ranked seventh in total victories by a men's NCAA Division I college coach, winning 876 games in 41 years of coaching at the University of Kentucky. Rupp is also second among all men's college coaches in all-time winning percentage (.822), trailing only Mark Few. Rupp was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on April 13, 1969. He played college basketball at the University of Kansas under coach Phog Allen.
The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball program is the intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Kansas. The program is classified in the NCAA's Division I and the team competes in the Big 12 Conference. Kansas is considered one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country with 5 overall National Championships, as well being a National Runner-Up six times and having the most conference titles in the nation. Kansas is the all-time consecutive conference titles record holder with 14 consecutive titles, a streak that ran from 2005 through 2018. The Jayhawks also own the NCAA record for most consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances with an active streak of 31 consecutive appearances. They were also, along with Dartmouth, the first team to appear in multiple NCAA Tournaments after making their second appearance in the 1942 tournament. The Jayhawks had been ranked in the AP poll for 232 consecutive polls, a streak that had stretched from the poll released on February 2, 2009 poll through the poll released on February 8, 2021, which is the longest streak in AP poll history. Of the 24 seasons the Big 12 conference has been in existence, Kansas has won at least a share of 19 Regular Season Conference titles.

The Florida–Florida State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the teams of the two oldest public universities of the U.S. state of Florida: the University of Florida Gators and Florida State University Seminoles. The 2008 LSU Tigers baseball team represented Louisiana State University in the NCAA Division I baseball season of 2008. This was the final year for the team in the original Alex Box Stadium. A new stadium was built during the season and opened on opening day of the 2009 season.

The West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team represents West Virginia University in NCAA Division I college basketball competition. They are a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Battle On Broadway, also known as the Kentucky–Transylvania rivalry, is a rivalry between inter-city and in-state rivals. With the creation of the NCAA, Transylvania University was placed in Division III while Kentucky stayed in Division I. Both schools in fact were once under the same Kentucky University. The Agricultural & Mechanical College of Kentucky eventually broke off to become its own separate entity in 1878. Almost a hundred years after most of the games were played the Lexington Herald-Leader wrote that the rivalry was "arguably more intense and controversial than any experienced in UK's history.”

The border rivals have faced off on the gridiron since 1893, making it one of the oldest series in major college football. It was close in the early years, with Kentucky holding a series lead after the first 22 match-ups, but since the early 1930s, Tennessee has dominated the cross-border rivalry.
The Maryland–Navy lacrosse rivalry is an intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between the Maryland Terrapins and Navy Midshipmen. Hailing from College Park and Annapolis, the state rivals have another historical series in college football, known as the Crab Bowl Classic. In lacrosse, the teams first met in 1924 and have met annually since 1927, aside from brief interruptions due to World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to Maryland upgrading its club team to varsity in 1924, the teams met seven additional times, with Navy winning five of those. However, these do not count in the official record. Traditionally taking place in either April or May, the game has been moved up to the earlier months of the season to accommodate the teams' increasing difficulty to schedule non-conference games, compounded by the expansion of the Patriot League and Maryland's decision to join the Big Ten Conference. Despite concern that the series may have to be postponed indefinitely, the teams have maintain the annual series, though it has at times been played mid-week rather than as the weekend headliner.

Both teams compete in the NHL's Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division. The two teams were fierce rivals mainly during the 1980s and early 1990s, although tensions have flared once more in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
