In music, a single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record or an album. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of formats. In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download, or video release. In other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album.
A music download is the digital transfer of music via the Internet into a device capable of decoding and playing it, such as a personal computer, portable media player, MP3 player or smartphone. This term encompasses both legal downloads and downloads of copyrighted material without permission or legal payment. According to a Nielsen report, downloadable music accounted for 55.9 percent of all music sales in the US in 2012. By the beginning of 2011, Apple's iTunes Store alone made US$1.1 billion of revenue in the first quarter of its fiscal year. Music downloads are typically encoded with modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) audio data compression, particularly the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format used by iTunes as well as the MP3 audio coding format.
The UK Singles Downloads Chart is compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on behalf of the music industry. Since July 2015, the chart week runs from Friday to Thursday, with the chart date given as the following Thursday.
American singer Beyoncé has released six studio albums, five live albums, three compilation albums, five EPs, one soundtrack album, two karaoke albums, and 83 singles. Throughout her career, Beyoncé has sold over 118 million records worldwide as a solo artist, and a further 60 million as part of Destiny's Child, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. "Turn My Swag On" is a song written and recorded by American rapper Soulja Boy Tellem. It was released in October 2008 as the third single from his 2008 album iSouljaBoyTellem. It was performed at the 2009 BET Awards. The song topped the US Rap Charts and peaked at number 19 on the Hot 100. it has so far sold over 1,000,000 digital downloads in the US. It became Soulja Boy's third song to sell 1 million or more downloads, after "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" and "Crank Dat ".
"Impossible" is a song by Barbadian singer Shontelle. It is the lead single from her second studio album, No Gravity (2010). The song was written by Arnthor Birgisson and Ina Wroldsen, and produced by Birgisson. It was released digitally on 9 February 2010. "Impossible" peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, number 33 in Canada, number nine in the United Kingdom and number five in Denmark.
"Higher" is the fifth single from English singer-songwriter Taio Cruz's second studio album, Rokstarr. It was written and produced by Cruz and Sandy Vee, and was released on 26 November 2010. This song was originally written for Australian singer Kylie Minogue's album Aphrodite, but plans fell through. However, Cruz and Minogue recorded a version of the song for the European release, while American rapper Travie McCoy recorded guest raps for the American release. The Brazilian and United Kingdom versions have parts of McCoy's rap mixed into the Minogue version. The version on Cruz's albums feature a solo vocal by Cruz with no guest vocalist and an edited version of the solo version was added to Radio Disney's playlist.
"Time" is the fourth overall, and third official, single taken from British drum-and-bass duo Chase & Status' second studio album, No More Idols. The single features vocals from British singer Delilah. The single was released in the United Kingdom as a digital download on 29 April 2011. During March 2011, Chase & Status ran an online competition for fans to remix the track, with the winner's remix appearing on the digital bundle extended play. It was revealed on 31 March 2011 that the Kev Willow Remix had been crowned the winner of the competition, with the Primus Palas Remix and Enei Remix serving as the runners up.
"Champagne Showers" is a song performed by American EDM/electro hop recording duo LMFAO, featuring vocals from English singer-songwriter Natalia Kills. It was released as the second single from the album Sorry for Party Rocking (2011). This song was an international hit in New Zealand, Australia, France, Ireland and Austria, peaking #8, #9, #12, #15 and #18 respectively. This song was also in the Australian Top 50 for 27 Weeks and in the French Top 200 for 50 weeks.
"Swagger Jagger" is the debut single by English singer Cher Lloyd, taken from her debut studio album Sticks and Stones (2011). It was released as the album's lead single on 31 July 2011. The song was written by the two production teams The Runners and The Monarch with Lloyd, Petr Brdičko, Autumn Rowe, Marcus Lomax and Clarence Coffee Jr. and is composed to the tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine". The music video was released on 26 June 2011. It was also used in the movie Identity Thief with Melissa McCarthy.
"Only Teardrops" is a song recorded by Danish singer Emmelie de Forest. The song was written by Lise Cabble, Julia Fabrin Jakobsen and Thomas Stengaard, and it was produced by Frederik Thaae. It is best known as Denmark's winning entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 held in Malmö, Sweden. The song competed in the first semi-final on 14 May 2013 and managed to qualify for a spot in the final on 18 May 2013. The song competed in the final against 25 other songs, and finished in first place with 281 points.
"Loving You" is a single by English recording artists Matt Cardle and Melanie C. It was written by Cardle, Jez Ashurst, Will Talbot, Jamie Scott, and Melanie C, and it was produced by Cardle, Scott, and Toby Smith. It features Cardle on drums and acoustic guitar. The single was released on 18 August 2013 in the United Kingdom as a digital download as the lead single from his third studio album Porcelain (2013). It has also been released in many countries worldwide, making it the first of his singles to be released outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. Despite only BBC Radio 2 playlisiting the song, which meant a lack of airplay on radio overall, it performed well in the charts.
"Lived a Lie" is a single by British rock band You Me at Six. The single was released on 3 September 2013 as a digital download in the United Kingdom. It is the first single from their album Cavalier Youth. Following its release on iTunes, it debuted at Number 1 on the iTunes chart, their only song to do so. However, "Lived A Lie" debuted at Number 11 on the UK Singles Chart on the week ending 14 September 2013 due to lack of sales following from its release, making it their highest chart position in their home country to date.
"Wild Heart" is a song by British pop rock band The Vamps. It was released in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2014 as the second single from their debut studio album Meet the Vamps (2014).
"You Got It All" is a song performed by English boy band Union J, and written by Nasri (Magic!). It was released on 28 November 2014 in Ireland, and on 30 November 2014 in the UK, as the second and final single from Union J's second studio album You Got It All – The Album (2014). Additionally, a version featuring The Vamps was released on 1 December 2014. It's the group's final single with George Shelley after he left the group on 4 March 2016.
"Outlines" is a song recorded by Dutch record producer and DJ Mike Mago and Canadian synthpop group Dragonette. It was released as a single on 29 August 2014 by Spinnin' Records.
"Decline" is a song by English-Swiss singer and songwriter Raye and Nigerian singer and songwriter Mr Eazi, released 3 November 2017, as the lead single from the formers third EP, Side Tape. The song samples and interpolates the 2002 single "Always on Time" by Ja Rule featuring Ashanti.
"Fine Line" is a song by English singer and songwriter Mabel featuring British rapper Not3s. The song peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming her second UK hit after "Finders Keepers". The song was included as a track on the 2018 reissue of Mabel's debut mixtape, Ivy to Roses, as well as her debut studio album, High Expectations.
