Chantry is a suburban residential area in the south west district of Ipswich, in the county of Suffolk, England. It lies west of Stoke. It has a population of over 30,000. [1]
Chantry has a public library, several pubs, shopping parades, a community centre and health care providers. It is well served by public transport. Several churches are located in the area, including St. Francis [2] in Hawthorn Drive, [3] Shepherd Drive Baptist Church, [4] St Mark's Roman Catholic church in Hawthorn Drive, Chantry Methodist Church [5] and Greenfinch Church. [6]
Chantry Academy [7] serves the local area along with primary schools The Oaks, [8] Sprites, [9] Gusford, [10] The Willows, [11] St Marks Catholic Primary school [12] and special school The Bridge. A sixth form college [13] and a co-educational independent school St Joseph's College are nearby.
A hoard of Roman era gold was discovered during building work in Holcombe Crescent in 1968, with the initial find consisting of five Romano-British gold torcs (decorative neck rings). The items show design features associated with the Iron Age La Tène culture, & are thought to date from around 75 BC. A sixth torc was found in the following year, some distance from the others but thought to be from the same collection. The find’s proximity to the Belstead Brook has led to speculation that this hoard was associated with a spring or holy well in the area. The torcs are now housed in the British Museum in London, with copies on show in Ipswich Museum.
Chantry estate was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, originally as an area of council housing to replace demolished housing stock near the water front of Ipswich. In recent years it has been extended with the development of private housing around the original development.

Horsforth is a town and civil parish in the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, five miles north-west of Leeds city centre. Historically a village within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 18,895 at the 2011 Census. It became part of the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in 1974. In 1999, a civil parish was created for the area, and the parish council voted to rename itself a town council. The area is within the Horsforth ward of Leeds City Council, which also includes the southern part of Rawdon.

It is in the Belstead Brook electoral division of Suffolk County Council.

There are two notable Ipswich Hoards. The first was a hoard of Anglo-Saxon coins discovered in 1863. The second was a hoard of six Iron Age gold torcs that was discovered in 1968 and 1969. The latter hoard has been described as second only to the Snettisham Hoard in importance as a hoard from the Iron Age, and is held at the British Museum.
Stoke is the south west part of Ipswich, Suffolk, bounded by the River Orwell and Belstead Brook. To the west lie the Chantry estates. Stoke is associated with the coming of the railway and consequent industrialisation. Nowadays it is a suburb with many housing developments.
St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church is a Catholic church on the Chantry Estate in Ipswich. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia. It opened in May 1959.
Birkin Haward was a British Modernist architect, antiquarian, author and artist, described as "one of the foremost post-war regional architects" by Historic England. In his early architectural career, he worked at the practice of Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff in London, where he collaborated on two important Modernist buildings, 64 Old Church Street, Chelsea, and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea.
