Chapal Bhaduri is the last living female impersonator in Bengali theatre and perhaps even in Indian theatre. [1] [2] [3] He did female impersonation in Jatra, a form of Bengali folk theatre. [3] In 2010, he starred in a Bengali Film Arekti Premer Golpo which was directed by Kaushik Ganguly and written by Ganguly and Rituparno Ghosh.

Early life

He was born at Kolkata's Kali Dutta lane, as the youngest child of Tara Kumar Bhaduri, a theatre actor and Prava Devi, a theatre and film actress. Later in 1939, his family moved to Badamtala Lane of Goabagan area of Kolkata. He had three brothers and two sisters. Noted actor and singer, Ketaki Dutta is Bhaduri's youngest sister. With the backing of her mother, his acting career started at the age of only seven at Srirangam Theatre [now known as Biswarupa located at Northern Kolkata] where he played the role of Apurba in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bindur Chele. [1] Later in 1955, he performed in Bengali Theatre named Ali Baba where he played the female character of Marjina. [3]

His voice is very thin and soft and has a distinctly female tenor.[ citation needed ] After performing a female character in Ali Baba he was flooded with the female role in theatre.[ citation needed ] His performances in Raja Debidas, Chand Bibi, Sultana Razia and Mahiyashi Kaikeyi were big hits at that time and he became the leading lady of Bengal's jatra in the name of Chapalrani or Queen-Chapal.[ citation needed ] In the 1960s he was the highest paid 'actress' of Bengali Theatre. [1] [2] Chapal Bhaduri joined Natto Company in 1958. In the late sixties when women started to act in the theatre he found himself at a wrong end to cope up with the modern trend and he had to quit. In this time he worked with Kamala Production. Later he started to play Goddess Ma Shitala. His role in the semi-autobiographical Ramanimohan, a play produced in 2006, was his first full-length role as a male character, [4]

Film

He was seen in tele-film Ushnotar Jonne and the film Arekti Premer Golpo . Both of these were directed by Kaushik Ganguly. [1]

Chapal Bhaduri revived into fame after Naveen Kishore of the Seagull Foundation for the Arts had made a 44-minute documentary on the actor in 1999. Performing the Goddess — The Chapal Bhaduri Story focuses light on the man, who challenged financial penury to create a new performance — a monologue of Goddess Shitala. [3] A tele-film Ushnotar Jonne, directed by Kaushik Ganguly also depicts part of his life. In this telefilm he made a cameo appearance. The third one is Arekti Premer Golpo (Just Another Love Story) (Bengali-English), a feature film directed by Kaushik Ganguly in which he narrates his life on camera. [3]

Utpal Dutt was an Indian actor, director, and writer-playwright. He was primarily an actor in Bengali theatre, where he became a pioneering figure in Modern Indian theatre, when he founded the "Little Theatre Group" in 1949. This group enacted many English, Shakespearean and Brecht plays, in a period now known as the "Epic theatre" period, before it immersed itself completely in highly political and radical theatre. His plays became an apt vehicle for the expression of his Marxist ideologies, visible in socio-political plays such as Kallol (1965), Manusher Adhikar, Louha Manob (1964), Tiner Toloar and Maha-Bidroha. He also acted in over 100 Bengali and Hindi films in a career spanning 40 years, and remains most known for his roles in films such as Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome (1969), Satyajit Ray’s Agantuk (1991), Gautam Ghose’s Padma Nadir Majhi (1993) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's breezy Hindi comedies such as Gol Maal (1979) and Rang Birangi (1983). He also did the role of a sculptor, Sir Digindra Narayan, in the episode Seemant Heera of Byomkesh Bakshi on Doordarshan in 1993, shortly before his death.

Arekti Premer Golpo is a 2010 Indian drama film directed by Bengali filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly, written by Kaushik Ganguly. It stars Rituparno Ghosh and Indraneil Sengupta, with Ghosh playing a transgender filmmaker. It is the first film on queerness to be shot after the Delhi High Court struck down portions of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code in July 2009 as unconstitutional with respect to gay sex. The film premiered at the 60th Berlin Film Festival in 2010.

<i>Chotoder Chobi</i> 2014 Indian film

Chotoder Chobi is a 2014 Indian Bengali language feature film directed by Kaushik Ganguly. The film stars Dulal Sarkar and Deblina Roy in the lead roles. The film is directed by Ganguly and follows his earlier work on Laptop, Shabdo, Apur Panchali and Khaad. The plot revolves around the lives and opinions of a group of dwarfs who work as jokers in a circus. The film was released on 23 January 2015. Produced by Shrikant Mohta of Shree Venkatesh Films, the film's music was scored by Indradeep Dasgupta. The main cast as well as supporting actors were previously non-actors but Sarkar, one of the lead actors in the film, was awarded the Best Actor award at the 45th International Film Festival of India. It won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues.

The 41st International Film Festival of India was held from 22 November – 2 December 2010 in Goa. Veteran director Yash Chopra was the chief guest for this edition. The "Cannes Kaleidoscope 2010" was the highlight of the 41st edition. The "Best Actress" and "Best Actor" awards were re-instituted from this edition. The 41st edition paid homage to veteran French filmmaker Eric Rohmer. Six of his feature films were part of the festival. The platinum jubilee of Oriya Cinema was Commemorated and 26 Feature Films were screened. The edition also marked the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the Film & Television Institute of India.
